Mostly because for some reason my dad thought it sounded pretty funny and rhythmic in Swedish or something and would chant the password like a little jingle whenever we were playing.

It was long, but it did really nice things to compensate. The upper and lower case letters were marked so you didn't mix them up and it gave you the option to try entering the password after you wrote it down so you knew you didn't write it incorrectly. The legendarily shitty Hoshi wo miru Hito, an RPG in which grinding is an absolutely slow and awful experience, doesn't save your level in the password so you start from level 1 every time.

It crashes your 3ds in case you're wondering. For real.

He ain't lying. It does.

It would also crash the game on an NES, right?

Apparently in some versions, it just resets the game, but for my 2nd print (yellow label) version, it hard crashes.

>and if it wasn't for the marketing

I had never even heard about GS until I picked it up and I enjoyed it very much. Granted i don't care much for (J)RPGs so I have nothing to really compare it to. Was it great? No, but it was decent. Was it "a very poor game?" Far from it. You seem to like to exaggerate too much.

More like you were thinking it was more complicated than it really was. Brain says "It can't be this simple, so it's not", and you pass over the basic explanation repeatedly searching for more complex logic.

>Legend of the Mystical Ninja - Too long
The japanese version only 6 characters long, so I never had any problem with it.

Hiragana is easier to type, I guess.

Metroid passwords contain a "kill bit" which, if set to 1, causes the game to reset.

It seems to be an anti-cheating mechanism, designed to prevent players from typing in random gibberish and seeing what works.

I think it's the GBA game (River City Ransom DX) that doesn't save which bosses you've beaten.

River City Ransom's password system is perfectly fine, I don't know what everyone always complains about.

Why? If you can't tell the difference between O and 0 that's a PEBCAC.

It is too fucking long for starters and you have to get the password without any space breaks

>It is too fucking long
No it isn't. It's exactly as long as it needs to be.

It needs to store several stats (most of which are 6 bits long, a few of which are 7 bits) plus the bosses beaten, plus the player's inventory, plus money on hand.

It also needs to reserve a bit of space for making a parity check, so that it won't break the game when you mistake an S for a 5 or whatever.

It adds up.

Unless you're familiar with the font or 0 is alongside O for you to compare, then it's going to be kind of hard to tell the difference. Shit, most fonts literally make an O just one unit wider than 0.

But those games only have 12 inputs. That's nothing compared to SIX PAGES.

>> No.1751526

Did any games use a scheme where the password "characters" are button presses?
So instead of being hex or text strings that took forever to select a character, it would be something like:

↑↑→←AB↓BBA↓↑

Sure, you'd only get about 2.6 bits of information per button press, but you could enter several button presses in the time it would take to enter one text character. On a SNES, you could bring that up 3 bits of information (4 directions, 4 face buttons) and use the triggers to back up if you made a mistake.

I remember Croc on PS1 did that. IIRC, it also came with a save feature, much like Crash Bandicoot 1.

>> No.1752686

Rayman didn't have input passwords, but it did have the password/save option

Which was neat if I couldn't find a memory card. Usually most games didn't even bother and used it to shill memory cards.
