Hello, /vr/. So I'm looking to play the retro Resident Evil games (up to Code Veronica) but there are so many enhanced ports, expanded editions and remakes I have no idea where to start. What do you recommend?

>> No.1738514

The PC ports are all capcom-tier as expected, so you might wanna avoid them.

>> No.1738518

I'd say start with the PS1 original. It's a fun game that still holds up today.

Avoid the RE1 Director's Cut and PC ports at all costs.

The Saturn version is actually the original and it's guaranteed to be hard mode (without autolock). Longbox PSX versions should also have this quality but there's no guarantee. On the other end of the spectrum I think the Gamecube Resident Evil ("REmake") is a really good experience as well but a lot of purists consider its '00s brown/gray color scheme to be too dated - which is funny considering that's implying the obviously more dated low poly versions are I guess "vintage" now. Personally I can nostalgia goggles myself to appreciate either one.

Resident Evil 2 is an arguable one, the Playstation version has better cutscenes but the N64 version has better control options and a somewhat better poly count in-game. It was really a marvel of engineering. The Dreamcast version is probably best though.

I fucking hate RE3 but that certain namefag thinks it's the best along with Dino Crisis. They're better than RE4+ I guess but I really like Veronica.

After that, I think you should play Silent Hill.

RE1: Director's Cut non-dual shock

The regular and dual shock version have different serials. SLUS-00551 is the one to look for and SLUS-00747 is the dual shock.

RE 2: Dual Shock Version (dat Extreme Battle Mode)

RE3: doesn't matter

For Code Veronica, just play X. Whether you want to watch extra cutscenes or not, X versions are 60fps.

They do have it. The jap version (Biohazard) was originally the only one with auto-aim.

The game was originally an action spin off title.

It was never intended to be a sequel. It plays more like a DinoCrisis game than a RE game. The game feels rushed and unoriginal. Game wasnt created by flagship team either.

>> No.1741635

>>1741502
I like it a lot actually. I think as another anon mentioned it felt like an expansion pack. I really liked revisiting the police station at the time. It was cool as sort of an homage or cameo of RE2, even if it was probably just saving code and development time.

Nemesis encounters were always tense and fun. I was never good enough as others were to beat the shit out of him each time.

The characters or story wasn't as memorable or interesting as RE2 though. I suppose that's a niggling point, but after the cheesy wackiness of RE2's cast, RE3 is a lot more subdued and I feel the game suffers for it, considering it's the send-off of the "original" trilogy. Jill, Nikolai and Carlos don't hold a candle up to Birkin, Ada, Irons, Sherry, Annette, Claire, and Leon.

>>1741615
not him, but it's a little silly to lump RE4 with its vastly inferior sequels. RE4 -is- a great game, better than RE3 and probably on-par with RE2 (if not better!).

OT: is there a version of Resident Evil 1 with auto-aim aside from the DS port?

>> No.1741647

Story went completely off the rails, Jill redesign obliterated her personality to the point where she became an entirely different person (thus setting a trend that continues to this day), insta-kill knife dodge, not a lot of extra modes or features. Honestly, what's to like? We haven't had a proper RE game since.

>> No.1741652

Lol, i was laughing my ass off at how much of a self-righteous bitch Jill was in RE3 compared to [the extent of] her RE1 character of "Help me Barry!"

It was really funny how unlikable she was. Jill, give these poor civilians a break! It's not their fault Umbrella fucked them over!

Something that also made me smile was the constant typo:

"They have taken everything from me. Everything... But I won't give up. I won't allow them to win.

They can't stop, my last escape..."

I imagine Jill dramatically pausing every time she says that too.

The fact that you now escape through the city and it has better visuals than previous titles.

the story in RE has always been corny, but that's part of the charm.

The problem with RE3's story is that it is very dull in comparison to RE1 and RE2. I like RE3's goofy moments, but there are less of them than there are in the other games.

I also feel like that while the pre-rendered backgrounds look better in RE3, the character models look worse than those in RE2. It always felt weird.
