Chu-Teng was ripped and uploaded to the internet on July 3, 2013. Now that it's been a year, what are some other "lost" or hard to find retro games?

The one I can think of is Socks the Cat Rocks the Hill, a licensed SNES platformer featuring a wacky cartoon version of Bill Clinton's cat, Socks.

It probably won't ever be "found" because its only known owner is a huge attention whoring faggot who literally claims to be afraid people will forget about him and he won't be special anymore if he ever dumps the game.

From the looks of it, it's probably not a great game at all. Certainly nothing like Chu Teng. Here's gameplay footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McDVmiYFdKw

I remember the Chu-Teng thread, even cuz i was the one who contacted the guy who knew that other japanese guy who had the physical copy of it...everyone was saying there were no info about physical copies, untill one anon said he read on a forum one guy knew this jap guy who had it, and linked to the forum,...then everyone started going like "someone should contact him on skype or something", but no one did...so i did(skype was in the profile of that guy in the forum) and link him to the thread.
I remember he succesfully contacted the jap guy, but said guy didnt want to rip the cd cuz A) he didnt know how to, and B) he was scared about jap laws regarding videogames ripping.
Then i lost interest so i dunno how or who actually ripped the game, and if it was from that jap guy or if somone else with a copy was found.
Although i never cared much for this game, it was cool being a part of what it led to this little piece of pbscure videogame history.

From what I remember, yes. Apparently people sent death threats to the elusive "Christina Coffin" to release the last build of the game or other materials she obtained, and I think she ended up posting somewhere that she had deleted everything. I think some people also got in contact with Mark Kupper, Mike Wallis, or Richard Wheeler, I forgot what became of that though, I think some guy got a brief interview with one of them. Or maybe I have this the other way around, and after the Sonic X-Treme Saturn beta was auctioned off without any of the development team's knowledge or consent Christina Coffin ended up deleting everything she had and other people received death threats. Again, this is very hazy in my mind, but I remember a pretty big effort to reach out to the development team outside of Christian Senn & Ofer Alon in 2006 or 2007.

Or not? Upon looking this up again for the first time in years, Christina (Ann) Coffin is actually a female, and was the technical director at Sega of America, where "Project Condor" and "Sonic X-Treme" were being worked on around the same time. From what little information floated around forums about the game from back then, Christina tried to reach out to the fans about the game, and released a couple screenshots and some info, afterwards she supposedly received death threats, but I can't find much info about it. Mike Wallis said in an interview he still has a copy of one of the builds somewhere, but probably won't release it out of respect for the rest of the development team. Apparently Christina Coffin is now an independent developer, and even has her own Twitter account where she is quite active. I wonder why the community of people still infatuated with this game haven't tried to reach out to her at all, maybe they all decided to shut up after the level viewer and 3D models of all the levels from the PC version were released to the public.

How interesting.

Interceptor Entertainment, the new owners of 3D Realms has possession of every single byte ever created by them. Unfortunately as you said, Gearbox owns the rights to DNF so we will never get it. Even when 3DR still has literally thousands of revs, builds, etc. Damn shame.

The idea of an army of man-children breaking into someone's house, beating him, then stealing his vidya is quite possibly one of the funniest things I've heard of in a long time. I bet they'd show up in white leotards and shitty masks like it's Spergwork Orange.

To be honest, it's barely playable.

Wasn't this picture from the other coders build? It is one of the *last* pieces of code that was worked upon. Ofer Alon I think, not 100% sure. This is an actual emulator screenshot, too.

The build that picture comes from, and Coffins improved & working Saturn fisheye code would be the two most interesting builds, and the third would be the boss fight arena with Metal Sonic flying around. The only leaked iso of Xtreme uses the boss engine but in a plain simple field.

>After this interview was published, serious prototype collectors began haggling with Brandon to sell California Raisins privately. He reportedly received offers as high as $3,000. Rather than trying to cash in and give the game to someone who would almost certainly never let anyone else ever play it, Brandon decided to make the California Raisins back-up binary file available to everyone for free. Afterwards, however, when he went to sell the cart, Brandon had a difficult time finding buyers. The collectors all pulled out and lost interest because the ROM image had been released. As the whales swam away, Brandon ultimately was only able to sell this one-of-a-kind unreleased Capcom game for $600. He took a $2,400 hit.

>Sometime later, while going through my backlog of inbox messages, I opened a haunting e-mail from a mother who had lost her child. She had been Googling her son’s name one day at work when she arrived at my site. She wanted to let me know how my conversation with Brandon had given her heart some ease because on December 18, 2004 he tragically left this world at the tender age of 22.

>As reported by The Florida Times-Union, “Separate juries found a Jacksonville couple guilty Friday of murdering their 22-year-old roommate, robbing him and then setting his body and apartment on fire — crimes prosecutors say were mimicked after they watched the 1994 movie Natural Born Killers.

>“Angus Wallen and Kara Winn, both 27, were tried separately and each convicted of first-degree murder, robbery and arson in the Dec. 18, 2004, crime.

>“Separate juries for each defendant determined that Wallen and Winn shot Brandon Murphy, took his car, debit card, Nintendo games and other property and then doused the body and the apartment with lighter fluid” (link). The pair who had committed the murder would eventually be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The roommate died in jail at the age of 30 (link).

>Brandon’s mother asked me more about her son’s involvement in video game preservation, and I spoke highly of his generosity and gave her links to Brandon’s posts on a popular classic gaming forum where he was a frequent contributor (his last post was made on November 30, 2004). I also helped her with the devastating task of selling what remained of his proud Capcom collection.

I hope some day the location test build of Darkstalkers 2 gets dumped. The location test for that game was very extensive, so a lot of people got to play that build and they still bring up their memories of it from time to time. I've heard all sorts of stories about how much better Donovan was than in the finished product. As well as stuff like Victor's punches shooting screen-length lightning bolts during his power up super, Rikuo's bubble super being a shield rather than an attack, and Huitzil's cannon super involving summoning another robot. Anyway, it seems like copies do still exist. I remember coming across a Tweet a few years ago mentioning a copy being featured at some arcade, complete with this photo; notice how attract mode Morrigan's in her normal colors here, rather than the blonde alternate palette of the finished product.

This was from "Project Condor". From what I remember the president of Sega of Japan saw a proto build of Christian&Ofer's version botched by some new company introduced to work with the rest of the team that wasn't Christian&Ofer that was working on the boss engine, and after Sega of Japan told them to scrap it the boss engine became Project Condor, and that's would've ended up as "Sonic X-Treme" on the Saturn, had it gone through, which is why I included that screenshot. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIP6GlmyXuI&t=8m15s More info here, this video explains this a lot better than I ever could.)

The original Relic's available for free on Project EGG, actually, and it's designed to have a mostly textless story (didn't even come with a manual, heh). Bothtec's 1999 remake and, as you've illustrated, RINNE are actually more difficult to acquire these days. The game's certainly got a legacy, considering that the top J-PC CRPG developer did an isometric take on Relics.
