Is there a right or wrong approach in remaking or updating a classic video game for modern audiences?

Yesterday I came across footage of the DS version of Super Mario 64 and while the game is technically superior to the original, I thought some of the changes made it inferior.

I won't argue much on aesthetic changes, as that could be the nostalgia talking (although, seeing Bowser in his current model move similarly to the N64 versions looks awkward). However, I'm not a fan of the DS game making players start out as Yoshi and having to unlock Mario later on. What made Super Mario 64's opening so great is that it was the first time Mario was in 3D and the game encouraged players to go nuts and move him anyway they could outside the castle. The DS opening takes away from that with its lengthy beginning.

DS controls were abysmal and made SM64DS almost unplayable

I also want to add that despite the Xbox version of Conker's Bad Fur Day had a crazy amount of detail to it, it's animation was incredibly lifeless when compared to the N64 game.

I'm fine with remakes/ports, but only if the new hardware can properly play the game. smb DX and those various mario gba ports have screen issue sizes.

emulating sm64 ds allows you to use a normal joystick making the controls a LOT better, but you still need to deal with a run button.

It doesn't change the controls at all unless you somehow managed to map your joystick to click-and-drag on the touchscreen.

If that could be done I would drop SM64 forever. Yoshi's egg throwing and Luigi's jumping combined with better character models and the little bits of extra content would carry the rest to make me prefer the DS game, because those things were cool and somehow DS's emulation became way better than N64's.

Right way to remake a game:
>Update graphics
>Fix bugs
Optional:
>Add new difficulty level

Wrong way to remake a game:
>Add new "features" that no one fucking asked for

I wasn't much of a fan of the original SM64 but SM64DS was shit in comparison.

The only thing I didn't like in the remake was that Yoshi's ability to make infinite coins rendered high scoring completely pointless.

I have an odd solution to the control problem 64DS had
honestly if Nintendo was competent enough to port the DS version with fixed controls or even allow for a patch to make the 3ds slidepad work with the proper depth movement then I'd be very happy to try it out

DS has fine controls, Super Mario 64 didn't have particularly complex analog in the first place. They adapt well to digital + a run button.

>Super Mario 64 didn't have particularly complex analog in the first place
actually it did
I remember reading that it had something upwards of 16 different movement speeds though that could just be bullshit but the fact remains dumbing it down to 2 speeds was fucking horrible

They don't even have the camera right up next to conkers face in the opening scene on the xbox version, he doesn't take a drink and it barely pans out compared to the N64. That completely ruins the nod to a clockwork orange......terrible.

you don't need the old c-button camera control because they added the "hold a certain button to always have the camera behind the character" that later 3d games have.

also while emulating to use a joystick instead of a dpad is loads better, you still only get 8 directions so it isn't nearly as precise as n64. personally I can't stand the run button.

SM64 is a pretty great remake, honestly. The controls take some getting used to, but it works well enough once you get used to it. The extra levels, bosses, and new abilities that were added into the DS version make it totally worth playing, even if you still find the original to be superior.

I didn't like to play as Yoshi, and that I had to use different characters to get different stars.
Yoshi a shit.
Mario a god

Tales of Destiny remake was unnecessary but not terribly bad.. thing is, nobody else in the world seems to have played that game except for me.

Not to mention the lack of curse words. The only word edited in the n64 version was fuck, the xbox version edited out shit, bitch, and ass.

Wonderful news about sm64 ds. if you're emulating, map punch and run to the same button.
amazingly, both buttons work together perfectly.

Can we agree that Kirby Super Star Ultra is the greatest remake of all time?

I wouldn't say unplayable, but it certainly wasn't ideal.

Absolutely not, they pissed away a golden opportunity to provide official netplay so co-op enthusiasts didn't have to use ZSNES anymore. That was THE biggest reason they could have had to remake the game and they blew it. They also redrew the sprites to that shitty style they've used for the handheld games for a while.
