I think this game is a good addition to the DOOM franchise. Though I'm positive the controls on the PC feel much better than the N64 controller, there were options in the game that allowed you to make your controller setup as exhaustively comprehensive as it needed to be. I think enemy placement, level design and difficulty were up to standard like the other games.

The dark ambient tracks and dark corridors were a real nice touch too.

I only got to the last boss and it kept beating the leaving shit out of me. I vaguely remember something about an ultimate weapon you get by discovering certain secret levels. Is this needed to kill the boss? Or am I just shit? That thing really slapped my shit.

Really great shooter though. The atmosphere was incredibly lonely and oppressive. I really did feel like I was all alone and against the odds.

Naw, I'm just kidding. The laser gun can be upgraded by three satanic medallions you get from the secret levels, which will literally kill the boss in a couple of seconds. The medallions also allow you to close the three portals in the arena, making the last battle against the mother demon much easier.

The 3D floors aren't done with sprites. BUILD works that way. The modified Doom engine used for D64 doesn't.

It's not my favorite Doom game, but I think it's overall the best set of official levels. It doesn't have the high peaks of classic stuff like E1 or the best Doom 2 maps, but it doesn't really have any bad maps either. I can warp just about any level and enjoy it.

My strategy for beating that boss was to circle-strafe like a madman during all the spawning, finally wearing down the horde and trying to make sure I had a good stock of life/armor left. 100+ for each, at least. Then when the boss spawns, I just charge the mother holding down the BFG button and tank the damage until it dies in like 3-4 shots. Grabbing the soul sphere on the boss platform helps.

I should add, the reason I switched to this technique (which is pretty reliable) is because whenever I tried to move around and dodge, the boss slapped my shit without me doing much damage to it. Those fireballs are a pain in the ass to dodge. So I decided to just take it in the face and get close enough to let all those sweet BFG rays hit home.

It was very odd and out of place, but still an interesting entry to Doom. It was like, Doom Grimdark Edition. Which certainly kind of works, the original games had pretty garish palettes (which wasn't a problem, even if it made everything look cartoony).

I would not say Q1 maps have a "huge" emphasis on verticality. Architecturally they have some neat structures here and there, but combat tends to stay near eye level or a little above (like 1 story up).

It really doesn't. Doom 64 maps tend to be more claustrophobic than Doom 1 and especially 2, so you really don't have many situations with enemies on high ledges or anything like that. Something like The Spiral is the exception rather than the rule.

Doom64 was a great expansion of the established Doom universe.
Downsides are the laughable artwork of some monsters(pinky being an exception), the Quake like "support" clutter which is totally non Doom and the limitations of cartridge space. Other than that the quality of the maps, atmosphere and lighting is great.

I've played a few levels of the EX PC port, and I gotta say, it's really great.
My only qualms are that the camera is positioned too low (it feels like the camera is in Doomguy's chest) and that the classic HUD isn't there, but maybe Doomguy's expressive face would've broken immersion.
Otherwise, it's an amazing sci-fi horror FPS that feels like it was both what Doom wanted to be and what Dead Space should've been

I don't think the camera is much lower, or if it is, it doesn't make the sprites look that much taller. I just tested it in EX and regular Doom 2, and in both cases when you walk right up to a zombie guy your eye height (midscreen) is at his chest. Imps easily touch the top of the screen at point blank.

It might be a LITTLE lower in Doom 64 but I'm not seeing a huge change.
