Panel de Pon/Tetris Attack thread

>What's your longest chain?
>Any friends you can play with who don't suck at it?
>Favorite version?

Started playing again today, just finished a 5 minute sweat breaking anal raping fuckfest. God I love this game, pic related.

>> No.1721260

>chain
Don't remember. Most of the screen. 3D mode with big lag gave me huge chain boners.
>friends
No one knows how to play. My mom is the only one who plays with me, and I win on handicap 9:1.
>version
Pokemon Puzzle League for sure. 3D mode is rad, and I like Pokemon(although I don't really care for the anime).

>> No.1721289

>What's your longest chain?
Awfully hard to say since it stops counting at 14 but I'm sure at some time or another I have reached the longest possible chain from a full column.

I like Panel de Pon's characters and themes way more than the generic Yoshi shit, but Tetris Attack has some slightly more refined mechanics.

I've managed to teach some people to get reasonably decent at it over the years but nobody can really touch my level.

>> No.1721352

>>1721289
I think it stops at 12 but 15ish is also my high score. I'm not too fond of the 3D mode (yet).
To me Panel de Pon plays much more smoothly than TA, but I'm not sure about that.
Aside from that, the only real reason over TA would be dem kawaii characters and voices

>>1721298
I sadly know that feel.
When I was around 12 I used to play Pokémon Puzzle League with a friend which was pretty much en paire with me. Since then I'm hoping to find someone as good.
Very Hard mode can be challenging sometimes but it's just not the same compared to an epic 15 minute match vs. a real player.

Such is the pain of being the person who unlocks everything in a game. You become god, and cannot have fun with normal players ever again.

>> No.1721391

>>1721352
It counts to 13x but at 14 and above all chains are just counted as [?].

>>1721358
Ah but it's not actually the case with Tetris Attack. I enjoy the game so much that I can actually have fun with people far below my skill level by imposing interesting restrictions on myself.

>> No.1721401

>>1721352
Panel de Pon has more slowdown than Tetris Attack so I'm not sure how you get that feeling.

>> No.1721417

>>1721401
I was talking more along the lines of the actual control mechanism, like switching blocks, moving them much quicker and a better input reaction. Might just be my imagination.

>> No.1721427

>>1721417
Yeah it's probably just in your head. I can tell you that I DO notice some sort of input lag when playing Pokemon Puzzle League emulated. I haven't played the game physically in the long time though so I can't say if it's just bad emulation or what.

>> No.1722623

My mom and sister play it some, and if I give a handicap in their favor, it can be a pretty even match.

I kinda want to netplay it with a friend of mine at some point, but we've been playing other games. I know I'd get my ass handed to me if I went against someone who was actually good at it though. My entire strategy is spamming as many combos of 4 blocks I can, I'm not good enough to plan out chains, they're always luck for me.

>> No.1723749

>>1722623

Fairly effective strategy going for small 4 blockers. If you could get a bit more exposed and learn to plan small chains (with at least one being a 4 block), then your play will be solid

>> No.1723783

>>1723749
Yeah, I need to work on chains. Usually when I play now it just escalates things, the combo blocks get broken, chains happen accidentally for both of us, and it just gets exponentially chaotic. The winner is the one that handles that the best.

Which is fun, but it can backfire, especially if I'm playing against someone who can set up chains well.

We should do a Tetris Attack tournament sometime.

Love Tetris Attack / PDP to death but I'm not that good. I think the highest combo I've gotten is 12 and I rarely go over 6 in normal play.

None of y friends are any good. But at my last job after I mentioned I like Tetris Attack, my boss brought in his SNES and I basically got payed to play Tetris Attack with him for 4 hours. We were right at the same skill level so it was a lot of fun to play

Favorite version is PDP because muh magical girl lolis. But I also like the GBA version for all the customization options and good AI.

>> No.1726992

Oooooh, I'd love to play some Tetris Attack!

I never actually played Panel De Pon, but it looks like exactly the same game. What are the differences between the two?

I got just barely good enough to complete the game on extra hard, and I got good enough to make people mad. My best chain is somewhere around 8 and I semi-consistently pull of 2~4. I know a lot of tricks to turn certain patterns into combo-chains, but I can't interpret the information quickly enough to execute it most of the time.

i was decent at this game but i wouldnt say i was great at it . still though its one of my favorite puzzle games

Tetris Attack has slightly smarter computer AI and less slowdown. Also they altered the scoring system a bit but I never remember exactly how.

Please go over these as well.

I'm about to try PdP for the first time after knowing nothing but Tetris Attack. It'll give me a reference to look at to see if I'm missing any during play.

You can probably learn about the time attack scoring changes from a TAS description.

>> No.1727381

>>1727361
But uh, in summary the Tetris Attack computer AI uses chains much more often and they're larger too. The slowdown that they reduced is most noticeable when you do a vs. game and both players work on clearing big chains and garbage at the same time. Panel de Pon slows down a good bit more during this.

Can /vr/ beat my high score?

>> No.1729730

I think I got to x? before on the original, but I can't remember. I certainly do it all the time on puzzle league.
Being able to rise while blocks are clearing makes that too easy.

>Being able to rise while blocks are clearing makes that too easy.
You can turn that off you know. I don't even do Score Attack with it on (however much I'd love to) because it doesn't record your exploding lift and non-exploding lift scores separately. I would have to overwrite my non-exploding lift score and I just don't wanna do that.

I know it's not /vr/, but my best chain is 50 on PdP DS. The touch screen mechanic makes it a pretty different game though -- I can't do things anywhere near as fast with the d-pad.

Its not /vr/, but PPL had the godliest online. Shit was smooth as hell even against people in japan. If only it wasn't shut down.

ZSNES netplay is utter shit in comparison. For fucks sake Nintendo, we need a 3DS game stat.

I wouldn't really say that. It was better for sure, but unless you're stuck with TCP shit, ZSNES does a pretty great job with Tetris Attack netplay.

Of the retro games, it's between the console versions of Tetris Attack and Pokemon Puzzle League. If you can stomach the nauseating Pokemon anime shit, Pokemon Puzzle League has far better AI and a nifty (though gimmicky) 3D mode as well. I haven't played the real thing in a long time though, so I can't say for sure whether this strange sort of input lag I get when emulating it is just an emulation issue. The portable games were only lesser versions of the console releases until modern times.

>> No.1733375

Why did Nintendo localize this with Yoshi but then made no reference to Yoshi in the title or boxart?

Gotta capitalize off some vague allusion to Tetris (falling blocks, see!) since they stole the name for it.

Ahaha, yes that music does use some hilariously cheesy samples. I don't think it's correct to call it MIDI though, that's a PC audio format.

But the worst part of it all by far is the constant voice clips from the anime whenever you do something. They are all incredibly irritating and you can't turn them off.
