Did anyone have one of these as their first console? I didn't even know this thing existed until the late 90's and assumed Sega never made a console before the Genesis

>> No.1716560

I'm assuming you're in the States. I am too, and I never heard of it until a few years ago. Genesis was the big console back in the day.

>> No.1716571

It was technically my first console, but I can't remember shit about it other than the controller barely worked because my brother was teething and chewed on the cord.

the fact they called in the genesis implies that it's the beginning too. I never saw a sega master system until I moved out of the city and someone was selling it at a yardsale in my suburb.

I didn't know they existed for the longest time until my friend said he had one and we played safari hunt on it. I just thought the genesis was first myself as well.

My first console was the RCA Studio 2. The Master System was my 4th console.

It's called the Mega Drive all over the world except Burgerland.

And the Master System was quite popular in Europe. My cousin had one but we never liked the games for it, so he got a SNES like I had. (My first system was a C64).

Yeah, I heard two stories as to why. The first was that "Mega Drive" was deemed too generic to trademark, the second was that some hard drive manufacturer already had the rights to it.

A miserable pile of secrets?

>> No.1716635

Even though I was born in the mid 80's, I never heard of the thing until the late 90's when my cousin's got one for 20 bux from a garage sale.

During the early 90's my dad had a C64 and an Atari with bootleg rom board and chips.

He had it since the 80's, but also had a ton of games for it. He worked for a defense contractor and they had a huge bootleg ring at the time.

He upgraded to a 386SX, which he spent a pretty penny on at the time.

>> No.1716679

I did. Nothing special considering I'm dwelling in Europe though. It was an awesome console with a good chunk of excellent games. Give it a try.

Yep, copying games on the Commodore was its best advantage against consoles at the time. I had a copy program and me and my friends copied EVERY game we could (it was only a simple copying program though so I couldn't copy things that needed a sector copy utility for example).

>>1716679
Technically, it was superior to the NES. It's a shame Nintendo used their strong-arm tactics to keep companies from developing games for the SMS (for which they later got convicted, but by then it was too late for the Master System).

I did. All my friends and classmates owned an NES but for some reason my old man got me a master system. It had a default game built in(Hang On) which was an interesting feature.

Some games came on a credit card shaped media(I only had one of those and it was some flight sim). Ports were generally inferior to the NES versions but the MS had some good exclusives. The light gun accessory I thought was more accurate and better built than the NES counterpart.

The first RPG I played was Miracle Warrior but I didn't beat until many years later(in the midst of the 16 bit era) because my mother threw out the map that had the location of the last dungeon(I had to manually search every grid to find it).

Canadian here, and it was my first console - but not the first one that I played. My oldest brother (who moved out on his own when I was 7) had an Atari 2600 that I played, and some of my cousins had an Intellevision.

Curiously enough, the Master System was purchased at a Toys'R'Us in Bangor, Maine.

I played the hell out of Ghostbusters, Phantasy Star, Gangster Town, Zillion, Space Harrier, Hang On.

None of my friends had a SMS, it was NES and Atari almost all the way. I was given an NES in 1989 or so, and was old enough to work to purchase a Genesis and SNES around 1994. Even at that point, Atari machines were still very common in my area.

Yes I owned one as well as Shinobi, Outrun, Afterburner, R-Type, Alien Syndrome, and Phantasy Star. It had Hang On built into the console. You didn't hear about it because Nintendo had almost every third party locked in to the NES by contract.

I had never heard of it until my Dad saw some flyer or advert for the Power Base Converter right before Sonic came out. He ordered a bunch of games and the light gun, too.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego was a game I wasn't allowed to open until I was a little older... I guess? It sat on their dresser on the shrink wrap and I wasn't allowed to play it for some reason.

Global Defense was great as was Cloud Master

THIS.

I had a Master System back in the day (US here). It was my first console and I loved it. All my friends in my neighborhood had the NES, so I didn't miss out on all the must-play games.

When I was a kid, I wrote a letter to Sega of America telling them how much I loved their system and I mentioned some of the games like Alien Syndrome and OutRun (d'aww :3). A few weeks later, I received a hand-written note thanking me for being a fan packed with some goodies. Things like hints for games, and a sneak peek at the Genesis. In that sneak peek, they mentioned a thing called "The Telegenesis Network" and how you would be able to connect with your friends thru the telephone lines. I thought that was the best idea ever and I always wondered why they never followed thru with it. I wish I could find that letter, it's been years since I've seen it.

Here's the wiki on the Telegenesis network:

The idea of using phone lines to distribute data, even before the enternet, were around since the Atari 2600 era.

They all had the same issues:

>High Cost
>Lag
>Lack of supported titles

The Dreamcast Service was decent, but ultimately doomed along with its console. It was only after Microsoft came up with the Xbox Live model of online consoles, with the help of the already-widespread internet as we know it, that it became a feasible thing.'

Wasn't my first but my only freind that was as big of a computer nerd as I had one. Never knew it existed until I slept over at his house, and I borrowed one of his gamepads for my Atari 7800 immediately once we saw that it worked.

Good times. We played Wing Commander on his IBM PC until daybreak every weekend.

The SMS was engulfed by the Behemoth Known As The Nintendo Entertainment System just like every other console here in the States.

This was the first console my family owned, despite the fact it was the late nineties and I'd already played the likes of the Megadrive and the PS1 at my cousins houses.

We got given one by a family friend, whose kids didn't play it any more.

Had Alex Kidd built in and a bunch of games, only two I remember playing were Sonic 2 and Kung Fu Kid.

Didn't have it for long though, soon moved on to a Megadrive, then a PS1 in a pretty short period of time.
