What is your opinion on rail shooters?

Were they good?
Did they serve a niche?
Are you happy or sad to see them go?
Do they have a place in modern gaming?

If you want to discuss other completely dead genres, that is fine too.

I never liked them. No matter how much you dress them up they're just whack-a-mole.

I freaking love the genre. I remember when I played my first on rail shooter back in the 90's, it was Jurassic Park: Lost World. The action ansd the fact that you have to aim the weapon outside the screen to reload was a mind blown for me as a kid. It's pretty sad that the genre is dying, though. I would love new games for home consoles and PC, but with longer campaigns and a bit of innovation.

I recently played Sin & Punishment: Star Successor for the Wii. Didn't like it, I preffer the original.

It's hardly a dead genre. In fact it's one of the few arcade game genres that still gets consistent releases, and the Wii last generation issued a major revival in home versions of them.

Anyone remember Tempest/Arashi for mac os 8/9?

Shit was so crazy. Used to melt my brain. Come to think of it this would do very well as a cellphone game reboot

Did FMV games damage the genre?
