DKC had good graphics, at least for the time. The animations are very smooth.

I think the n64 had a slight upper hand on visuals, mainly because of the texture filtering. I grew up with PS1 so this isn't nostalgia talking.

Not going to read the thread. I can already guess it is filled with spillovers from the in/v/asion posting their epic contrarian opinions about games that actually have good graphics but are popular. I'm guessing the thread will be filled with the DKC trilogy, Super Metroid, Star Fox, Sonic 3, Castlevania titles, Mega Man NES titles, and the entire N64 library. Shame because the characters had great graphics (for the time) in-battle and in FMV scenes, but the way that all the characters and NPCs were blocky piles of crap during in map/towns was just fugly. I really, really like the overall look of FF7, especially the chibi look of the overworld models. But I'll never understand why people praise the FMV today like it's something special. It may have been an accomplishment when it was new, but it just doesn't look very good today while the rest of the game totally does to me. Pic related just gives me the creeps. The whole sequence does, really. And to me, that extra technical prowess doesn't amount to instant praise when it ultimately would have lasted better if it had been hand drawn or something. The 3D FMV sold damn well, and I know that's what they were going for, but it still bugs me.
Then again, people do mod in higher poly models for the overworld, which just looks awful to me. I guess I'm in the minority. Whatever.

The N64 had a RAM access bottleneck that forced compromises between things that normally don't affect each other; it had no separate video ram, instead it used unified system RAM which would have been bizarre even for simpler consoles a generation previous.

It's funny, the DS is a weaker machine overall so DS games have to load much smaller environments and fewer models, but DS textures blow N64's the fuck out by a huge margin. Which you couldn't reasonably be expected to SEE at 256x192 a lot of the time. When emulating, increasing internal resolution of 5th gen games almost always looks like garbage, but for DS games it shows detail that wasn't even visible! Fucking Nintendo.
