ITT: Things that scare us in retro games. They don't have to be scary scenes specifically, they just have to have scared you.

I was on Youtube looking at Mario 64 death animations. Holy shit, Mario's gone through some dangerous shit. A lot of them are outright horrific like the gas one.

When I was little, between 3 and 6, my brother had a copy of Mega Man X. I wanted to play it so I turned it on. The beginning freaked me out with all its blinking, I couldn't read so I thought I broke the game and started sobbing. My family thought it was hilarious

I was scared of the dark world in a Link to the past. But I finished anyway.

And no so much scared, but it was very weird, in super mario world, when we passed all special stages, when the world changes colors and the enemies become all diferent, I got such a horrible feeling, like i broke the game.

>Mario 64 death animations

Worst one was dying to quicksand. He just sticks his head up, wails, and down he goes. That was pretty unnerving. Or it was incredibly hilarious.

The assassins in half-life 1. When I was a kid and saw them running with their weird run animation and then all of a sudden my screen is flashing red, it spooked me a little.

i just finished a 100% game in SM64 for the first time today!

as for the thread Hurricanes in Harvest Moon 64. The sound was horrifying but even worse was the knowledge that parts of your farm could be gone. my brother lost 2 green houses to the damn things and then the third hurricane brought back the first green house. shit was weird

My first game was Crash Bandicoot, and the scene that'd pop up when you'd die would always freak me out as a kid. Didn't get into games until I got Spyro, aww yeah.

Somehow I was freaked out by the most soothing music in Mario history as a kid.

this, the apocalypse bearing down on you and getting ever closer

also the spooky city in pokemon red, i forget what its called now, lavender town? with the ghost tower. all those people mourning their actually dead pokemans was some real shit and the music is eerie as hell. 15 years later I learn that putting the track through a visualizer creates images of ghosts and unown at the noise sections.

missigno also gave me the creeps because of how weird it was, jumping around levels and learning all kinds of random moves. I have no idea how I even heard about it but I caught him when I was pretty young.

They're the sort of thing that just made you have a panic attack trying to get out of the water.

Can something be depressing and horrific at the same time?

It wasn't until Game Theory pointed it out that I realized the implications of Romani and the Chateau Romani. I instantly looked for a fanfic and I found one actually

Why the fuck does youtube speed that song up?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0gW09DTSac

This is how it's normally played but in every single video I see on youtube with JUST the music, the tempo is faster.

That's how the official soundtrack sounds. It has higher quality synth samples for most of the songs.

FUCK

I'm really young but that was the only part of the game that really scared me.

Not to mention when I rented MGS for the first time and played a demo for silent hill by accident
