Other than that, I had pic related. I tried so hard, and I kept hoping it would get easier, or I would get better. I just couldn't get through this game. I still think it looked good and sounded good for a Wolverine game.

I should go back to both some day, it's probably been at least fifteen years at least since I played either of those.

This game is really bland and painfully mediocre to the point where I am really surprised at how it managed to spawn an entire series of vastly superior sequels.

But back then it didn't take much to at least create an illusion of a big, open world, exploration, interesting characters and engaging combat. It was my Skyrim and I sank hundreds of hours into it, many to play it like an RPG in every sense of the world: to simply run around the world, get into every nook and cranny of it, fish and hunt at random places, eat fruit from the trees, settle down in an empty house in one of those towns. It was super silly, looking back at it, but back then I was hooked.

For quite a while I only had access to this book and a handful of computer magazines that also had some BASIC game listings. Had to type them all in, and then adapt a few things here and there to get the programs to run in my BASIC dialect.

They were all text mode games. By that I mean pure text mode, the kind that would actually work ok on an actual teletype machine (so nothing like ncurses, etc.) because the listings in this book are actually adaptations of BASIC programs that were first created on minicomputers (the hardware that was around before microcomputers).

A lot of these games were pretty boring after you played them a few times, but there were some cool ones. Eliza, Hunt the Wumpus, Seabattle, and Trucker (a simulation game) come to mind. Also a few strategy games like Blackjack, Gomoku, etc.

Anyway, this (and other similar books) can be found online here:
http://www.atariarchives.org/morebasicgames/
It's got the full BASIC listings along with printouts of actual play sessions, so you can get a good idea of what these games were like. The artwork used in this book was really evocative back then, and I still dig it to this day.

The original was just generic and nothing special. I beat both and liked both, but things about the 2nd game just irritated me when I was younger. How do I put it. If you play RPGs with a completionist mentality and the secrets they put in feel so obscure (and with no clues), they require a guide, it's very annoying. I know one of those elemental sprites was in this map that was underwater, on an invisible tile, and if I remember correctly, there were no NPCs that suggested to that fact. I'm pretty sure most of them were in bogus areas... and fishing for the ultimate equipment was a silly concept too.

From what I remember it had good points but largely bad - I think every single level had a time limit which is something I've always disliked - I tend to find they just make a game stressful rather than fun, and they're a bit of an artificial challenge in the same sort of vein as Tomb Raider's instant death traps you have no way of knowing until you've hit them. Liked all the different weapons, but by and large it was bit meh. Seem to remember it being ridiculously hard too, again largely thanks to the time limit. Still played it quite a lot.

I actually agree, It's not that bad, but for a game that bills itself as Pac-Man 2, it doesn't quite come off as a sequel and it gets a ton of hate for that. For console babbys like me, never having played a point-and-click adventure game before, it's pretty hard to get used to.

Monster Jam, for SNES

I can't tell you how many hours I dumped into it because the SNES was the only console we had, and that the only game for it back in 2003.

Due to reasons even I myself do not comprehend, I ended up with a Genesis in the sack in my basement and not a SNES but I distinctly remember having a SNES.

I miss it terribly. It was a launch model NTSC with almost no yellowing to the plastic, unlike lamost everything else from the 80's.

My dad bought my SNES second hand at some flee market or some shit, came with this game.
I know it's technically not bad, but it was literally the only game I had to play for MONTHS, and didn't even have a second controller or willing friends to play against, so I was stuck with single player.
To make things worse, the game became obsolete like a couple months later with the Turbo version which actually had the cool bosses, and the SNES itself came in the original box, which was the Link To The Past bundle, it even had all the manuals and such. I remember reading the manual and fantasizing about the much more awesome game I could be playing instead, but I guess the reseller either sold it separately or went "No kid wants to play this elf gay shit, I bet it'll sell better with SFII, now THAT'S a manly game".

>Bart Vs Space Muntants

I had this game as a kid, It took me months to realize how to beat the first level, never got to beat the second level because of a stupid plataform that I could never reach.

Last year I was playing it on my Wii and discovered that if you pressed A + B while jumping you could do a larger leap, it took me almost 15 years to realize this, how the hell did I never tried that?.

Same thing when I found out that you dont need to alternate between A and B to run on Track & Field, just had to press A.

Man I was pretty dense on those years, I hope I'm not anymore.

It doesn't always work. For a long time, back when there were two words, one being the known control and one being the unknown, you had to type the known control correctly but could type absolutely anything for the unknown.

You just had to separate them with a space, so the easiest thing to do was to type a second space for the unknown. They later changed it so that you had to type a bit more for the unknown.

If you only see one word or number and can't get it to accept what you're entering, try typing two spaces after it.

"It'll be like the X-Men arcade game!"

God damn it.

So here's the story; I never got good enough to actually beat more than 2, maybe 3 of the stages. I remember being able to beat Gambit, Beast and sometimes Wolverine's levels, but the hoverbikes in Cyclops' level always confused the fuck out of me and Psylocke was too shitty to do anything

Fast forward to when I'm an adult, I haven't played the game in literally a fucking decade, I finally boot it up and manage to get past all 5 stages, and assume that I'm about to come up to maybe 2 boss levels. I fight and fight but I fucking get stuck again

So I figure, fuck it, this game has passwords, I'm going to look them up and at least see all the other levels

It turns out there's like 5 levels after that and THEN there's another section where everyone has an individual level again. Fucking ridiculous bullshit, man. Fuck that. I shut it off and I'm probably never going to play it again.

The music was amazing though. Classics Capcom.

I eventually discovered it by accident, after like the 4th time I rented it or something, I don't hold it against the game though, it was very satisfying being able to move out and reach those stages where you can just pick any character you want, and the game itself is awesome, I had fun even when replaying the initial 5 stages over and over.

Mom won it at a raffle. It was free so hey, why the fuck not, right? I also didn't have that many other NES games, so I ended up sinking a lot of time into this.

It's not a bad game mechanically speaking, but it does require a lot of exploration and finding cryptically hidden things, doesn't help that the game was obscure as shit so not a single one of my magazines had any guides or tips for it.

As a kid I could never beat it, I came pretty close but I was missing an item (Apollo's Sword) which is the only way to kill a certain boss and go on to the last part of the game. I beat it as an adult out of morbid curiosity, while playing on an emulator.

Also, it amuses me that such a shitty obscure game is now some sort of pop culture thing, thanks to Scott Pilgrim.

I didn't remember this being so bad and remembered some of the music pretty fondly, but I never got very far as a kid. I tried it again recently and now I know why. It's fucking awful. Welp, I thought it was the same game cause it is rather shitty as well, though probably not as bad as many in this thread.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JhCTBjBbOY

Major issue comes with the controls and slowdowns due to hardware, but it still has some charm to it (mostly in the art, and the fact that the control is clunky actually makes you feel just like Robocop) that I played it a lot.

Those and the alien porcupine things were pure bullshit. But your right about the general difficulty-- this was probably the first game I played that I ever wanted to git gud at. I still consider it to be one of the best titles that represented "NES hard"-- the difficulty wasn't artificial or bullshit in my opinion since character, item and health management (plus memorization and a little luck) was clearly central to beating the game.

Like most kids in in he mid-80s, TMNT was a damn obsession for me. So when I got the NES game, I instantly loved it and was hooked. The feeling of beating each level was so rewarding because of how unforgiving and difficult the game was at times.
