Is it worth starting with 0, /vr/? My original plan was to play through this, and then move on to Earthbound... I played through about half of zero, but then lost the save file when I transfered all my files to a new computer. Should I start over? Or just start with earthbound?

Zero has my favorite story out of all the EarthBound/MOTHER games, and it's pretty underlooked compared to its sequel, but there isn't a ton of continuity between Zero and EarthBound. There's some, and there's a lot of musical references and some redesigns of original NPC's, but overall I don't think it'd really hurt to start with EarthBound instead. It's a lot easier to get into and the game holds up a little bit better than Zero to most people.

(Also I forgot to mention, there's a fan retranslation of MOTHER1+2 on GBA that tweaks the difficulty of Zero a bit. The music isn't quite as good as the NES release, but it's still pretty much the same. Most people seem to prefer this version over the NES proto.)

The whole series is just 3 games, play them in order.
I think the series is best enjoyed when played in order. The only exception being people who got to play Mother 2 back in 1995. Nowdays with translated ROMs at your disposal you really have no excuse to play them in other order. The plots don't connect directly, but the main villain in Mother 2 is the same from Mother 1, also, you will feel like going backwards if you play 2 before 1. Enjoy Mother 1 as it is (a great 8 bit RPG) then move onto its 16 bit sequel, it'll feel great and you will actually be familiar with the antagonist. (it will make the iconic final encounter with him a lot more memorable if you know of his backstory from M1)

Sucks that you lost your save though.

If you start with Earthbound, going back to MOTHER is going to be really hard because of the lack of polish/inconsistent difficulty/bizarre design decisions. If you play it first, you'll be able to appreciate it more. Earthbound will feel fucking awesome compared to MOTHER, and then MOTHER 3 will be like getting a blowjob from three mermaids who all look like different girls you had crushes on in middle school

Okay, I think it's decided then. I'll go back to mother. It was a long time ago when I lost my save, so hopefully I won't feel like I'm just doing what I've already done again.

I don't mind the difficulty that much, but isn't ebound 0/the gba version censored a lot? Is that really bad/annoying at all? Or unnoticable?

Yes it is. Go with that one, OP.
Comes with the best English translation, a run button, and Easy Ring if you're that much of a casual. Try without the easy ring though.

It's the worst one. It is my favorite NES game and I love it, but 2 and 3 are what you need to experience. There's no order and you can go back to 1 someday, if you like the series.
