What is your favorite way to emulate?

-On which device do you play?
-Which Emulator do you use?
-What device you use for input?
-What games you prefer with the setup?

I'd like to play ZSNES on my home Computer with this simple gamepad i bought by accident many years back. It was the cheapest gamepad available and it turned out to be great to play SNES. The Dpad doesn't look like it but it is awesome. Wouldn't want to miss it. It has two extra shoulder buttons that I use for speed-up and slow-down. I mostly play Sim City, Secret of Evermore, Super Metroid, Street fighter, SMW 1 & 2, NBA Jam and other classics.

I also use my Smartphone (Samsung Galaxy 2) to run SNESoid. The emulator is ok. The input sucks however because I use the virtual buttons on the touch screen which are unprecise and often don't register. Also your fingers tend to cover much of the screen. The type of games are therefore limited to a few: Sim City, Lost Vikings, Kirby's Dream Course (barely), Lufia, Final Fantasy. I can't play Metroid or Mario or Street Fighter on it. I ordered a SF-30 bluetooth controller, this might allow me to play Mario on the go, who knows.

~5 years ago i had a small/light portable laptop that i used to emulate GBA with VisualBoyAdvance (which I very much enjoyed.) I used the keyboard to input and for some reason it never bothered me. Mostly played Advance Wars, Wario Ware, Kirby, Zelda Minish Cap, Metroid, Mario Tennis.

I mostly play on my PC or my Phone.

I usually use my PC for emulator, but also have my Phone to emulate games as well. I have a broken PSP that I need to repair my buttons on though.

I use either Retroarch or a dedicated plugin Emulator (PCSXR for example) depending on the game.

For input I use a PS3 Dualshock controller. I'm debating on picking up a PS4 controller and a Saturn to USB one but haven't done as much research.
If anyone wants to talk to me about them I'd be more than pleased.

I play everything on my PC. On my phone I stick to slower paced games like RPGs since I haven't set up my wii stick to control with it.

I'd love to use my wiimote on my phone but for some reason it was made impossible to use by either Google or Samsung after one update.

Wiimote + Smartphone + Rubberbands would be the perfect poor man's portable NES/GBC

;_;

Some Android phones can however use the Wiimote and use PS3 Dualshock.

The dpad itself has a bit of room for whiggeling around but the buttons underneath are very responsive and just as stiff as they should be. Feels great to press them because you never accidentaly go diagonal and you never accidentaly go not-diagonal.

The gamepad is so satiesfying that I usually completely forget about holding it and just become one with the game :P

>On which device do you play?
My PC. Built it for modern gaming, but I find myself using emulators more than anything.

>Which Emulator do you use?
RetroArch mostly.
I also use MAME and SSF for games that RetroArch doesn't support. Yes I know RetroArch supports MAME, but I can't get anything to work well.
Some non-retro stuff like Dolphin, PCSX2, and PPSSPP

>What device you use for input?
For digital input, I use a Buffalo USB SNES pad. For analog, I use my DualShock 4. For fighters and arcade games, I use an arcade stick.

Anything that runs generally runs pretty well. What games I prefer to play tend to change on a day-to-day basis, so I guess I don't have an answer.

I mostly emulate on my HTPC in my living room. AMD Fusion A6 + Win8 x64, 42-inch LG TV and a nice couch. Pretty comfy setup.

Sometimes I also emulate on my phone for casual gaming (MAME4droid and SNESoid), though not very often.

>Which Emulator do you use?
RetroArch for everything it supports, SSF, PPSSPP, nullDC

>What device you use for input?
Xbox 360 controller

>What games you prefer with the setup?
PS1, PSP, Dreamcast and Sega Model 2 and 3 games. The 360 controller obviously sucks for 2D gaming - the dpad is completely useless, I actually prefer mapping 2D controls to the left analog.

I'd like to buy a PS3 controller but I have this feeling that setting it up and getting it to work with everything will be a pain.

Yeah, getting the MAME core to play nice with RetroArch is a major pain, take note RA devs. I use it because of the filters but I'm almost to the point of ditching it and going back to MAMEUI.

A major usability flaw with the MAME core is that it doesn't autocreate the necessary folders for its configuration files to work properly, neither it spews any warnings when they don't exist. To add insult to injury RA devs pretty much change the paths with every new version.

And now for some reason the MAME core isn't saving my general input mappings - I have to setup individually for each game.

What a broad question...
For PC, mainly anything for home consoles that I can run, N64, PS1 and SNES.
For 3DS, mainly anything (but especially rpgs) for handheld systems. GB, GBC, GBA, GameGear.

Personally, I believe console games and handheld games are best played on home-devices and handheld devices respectively, occasionally interchanging. I refuse to play on phones though simply because there's not a single controller that feels good for me.

>-3DS, using a Supercard 2

dude can you explain what you can do with that on a 3ds? Since 3DS is constantly online (well mine is) and updates alot there is always the danger of bricking the thing (isn't there?)

>> No.1684473

>>1684461
You can do everything it can normally do as if playing on a DS, even wireless play, hosting downloadplay, and Wi-Fi (if it still existed). Since the flashcart tricks the 3DS into thinking its a DS game, you launch it from the 3DS menu and it will then be booted via DS-mode like a legit cart. I've played with the wireless switch on and off. Even when your 3DS is connected to the internet, it automatically disconnects regardless of switch position when going into DS mode, which I hope you knew already.

Uh, the bricking issue (whether it's the 3DS or the flashcart itself) has always seemed to be a rumor to me although I'm not entirely sure... I've also read somewhere that it's illegal for nintey to brick flashcarts (in the US/UK).

Personally though? I always update my 3DS whenever a patch comes available, which has at least two or three times rendered my Supercard completely inoperative.
That is, until I download and install a firmware update for the card (which is released very timely), then it's good to go, just as before.

Allthough i like the attempt Nintendo has been doing to get some community going. The Miiverse is crazy. The ammount of Fan-Art they draw with the stylus is baffeling. I feel like nobody else online gives a shit about children but Nintendo. Imagine you could have used your gameboy to talk with fans of your favorite game back in the day.

When you want to see something spookie:

Build a Mii of yourself (the way you think you look) and then use the function that takes a picture of you and turns it into a Mii. Compare the two and realize that the camera did a pretty good Job.

I laughed so hard because I really used to look like my Mii when the original Wii first came out. Kind of funny to see how much I aged in ~6 years ^^

It's fantastic for everything you mentioned besides the Saturn (thanks to SSF being closed-source). Dreamcast and PSP aren't perfect but they run better here than any other Android device. Anything else emulated that's popular and weaker than the Dreamcast will likely run well even with shaders.
It's bulky, but has great controls and the best speakers I've heard on a portable system. It has an SD card slot and a touch-screen (you won't be using it much but just in case). If you have a decent PC you can also stream games to it (which works for emulators on the PC too).

Anyone have any particualrly favorite filter setups for different emulators?

>> No.1693167

>On which device do you play?
PC and Wii.

>Which Emulator do you use?
Higan, Nestopia, Project 64, DeSmuMe, and Kega Fusion on PC.
Snes9x GX, FCE Ultra GX, and Genesis Plus on Wii.

>What device you use for input?
F310 on my PC. I also have an Xbox 360 pad, but I prefer the d-pad on the F310. Classic controller or Wii Remote on the Wii depending on the console.

>What games you prefer with the setup?
I usually keep the (S)NES & Genesis games on the Wii for my old TV. I play them on PC every now and again. PC is my only ticket for N64 and DS games. DS emulation is mostly for Ace Attorney and Pokemon.

You like the F310, really? I'm not how I feel about it.

I don't really don't like it for fighting games and it's my only option right now since I can't hookup my HRAP2 to my PC yet.

F510 quad-owner here. I agree that it's terrible for fighting games, but it's hella comfortable for everything else with the exception of racing games that take advantage of the sensitive trigger. Too cramping.

Anybody that dismisses this line of controllers is a casual in my opinion. The only controller that has come close to being better is the Saitek P2500 Rumble and I own four of those as well. Precision Pads in a pair but haven't used them in a while.

>On which device do you play?
on my laptop that is hooked up to my 32" TV (via VGA)
>Which Emulator do you use?
mostly WinVice (C64) and Kega Fusion (MD/Gen); occasionally RockNes too. only really play games/formats I'm familiar with
tbh
>What device you use for input?
generic USB gamepad. got a USB extension cable so I can just play away on the couch like inthe old days
>What games you prefer with the setup?
all of them really. would rather have a joystick for the C64 games, but no big deal. will use keyboard of playing DOS games etc

HP Mini 110 laptop, LG Optimus F6 phone, and PSP3000 console.

I use Wii Classic Controller Pro, Xbox 360, and keyboard for my controller on the computer.

On phone, I bought an Ipega Bluetooth Controller, and plan on getting a Playstation 3 controller.

On computer, I use Nestopia Undead Edition, DOSBox YKHWong, Snes9x, PCEjin, VisualBoyAdvance-M, Kega Fusion, MAMEUI32, T98-Next, and Magic Engine. I stay away from Playstation and N64, and consoles after them. Saturn emulation doesn't work for me, RetroArch refuses to work for me, I use Mednafen for multiplayer, and ZSNES for SNES romhacks. Xpadder is my favored controller to keyboard input device.

As for my phone; RetroArch, DOSBox Turbo, and any native ports I can hope to find. For wiring to touchscreen, I use Tincore Keymapper.

On PSP, I use Masterboy and NesterJ. I refuse to go beyond Mastersystem, Gameboy/Color, Nintendo Entertainment System, and Gamegear emulation on this device, with exceptions for Playstation. Not sure why I set those limitations, but I am satisfied with it. Yup, PSP is my Playstation machine. Couldn't get Nintendo 64 to work, even in the most fucking popular game, Mario 64, so I gave up entirely. If anyone would like to encourage another try, please do. Would be sweet as fuck to be able to do.

One modeline to rule them all. You can display most things to fit with no visible scaling issues and it will display as if you were using native resolution except you won't have to constantly change resolutions for each system that uses a different internal resolution.

Also more horizontal resolution makes signal blur emulation appear more realistic.

How is this controller ?

>> No.1696048

>>1696025
I have it since a couple years. It's pretty good for a cheap controller. Nice joysticks, but the triggers are pretty bad.

>> No.1696052

>>1696048
Nice.
I wouldn't use the trigger anyway. Thanks for the feedback.

Am I stupid ? I can't get Mednafen to work.

Are you using a GUI? Take a look at Mednaffe:
https://code.google.com/p/mednaffe/
or MednafenGUI:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mednafengui/

Wii retroarch + Trinny CRT via RGB at 512x240 for NES and 512x448 for SNES

Probably the closest I can get to the real thing. Maybe s video would look even better than RGB, but I can't find an official cable anywhere.

I use a cheap netbook I got forever ago and a ~$10 Sabrent USB controller with 6 face buttons. The laptop is set to output to my TV via HDMI. This setup is enough to play pretty much everything from PS1 back in 1080p with nice filters and it doubles as my HTPC setup with XBMC, so I couldn't be happier.
