Can we have a thread with 8-bit or 16-bit going?

This pic was from an earlier thread on this board. Most of the pics posted were from old visual novels.

It's sad sprite-based games are slowly becoming extinct. They're way prettier than polygons with blurry indefinable textures.

Thanks to crappy retro indie games there's probably more of those than ever.
And I don't see how great looking 2D games like Rayman Origins and Legends or the stuff Vanillaware puts out are something to be sad about just because they don't use pixels.

fighting games have the best backgrounds. its funny because they're the least explorable, but they often feel the most "real". They often have really subtle details

It may look similar to the 8 colors on the PC88 but if you take count you'll see it's 16 colors.

>crappy retro indie games there's probably more of those than ever.
not the poster you replied to but that's not quite the same thing, a lot of indie titles seem to underestimate what older system were capable of.

most indie titles that use pixel art seem to have clunky or boring sprites when developers on 8 bit and 16 bit systems used a lot of tricks and actually pushed impressive graphics, there are some good games and ones that even capture the spirit of 8 bit games but ive not seen one that has artwork like the examples in this thread; do you know any?

i'd love to play a game with sort of sprite art posted in this thread.

>> No.1670374

>>1670363
to be fair the only reason pixel graphics are popular again is because they're much easier to draw than 3d. most developers don't have a lot of artistic talent

Because they're not in fact "great looking". Especially Vanillaware's crap.

>> No.1671676

i suppose, i just figured if devs don't have the talent to make 3d art or really good sprite art they could experiment in a variety of different modern art type styles that don't require as much skill to make but i suppose crude pixelart has its fans

They really butchered the hell out of these backgrounds in the Saturn port. A shame too, as it could have used the 4MB RAM cart at that time for arcade-perfect graphics like XMvSF and Vampire Savior, but instead used the 1MB RAM cart.
