What is the best RPG for Snes?
My pick is Lufia 2.
Chrono Trigger and FF6 tied for second.

>> No.1660304

>people will start whining about traditional jrpg gameplay in 3...2...1...

Anyway gameplay wise I pick Tactics Ogre, Wizardry 1 2 3, SMT 2, Bahamut Lagoon, Emerald Dragon and possibly the Fire Emblems. These are games with excellent gameplay.

Story and character wise I pick Seiken Densetsu 3.

>Tactics Ogre
>SMT 2

Those had terrible gameplay though.

I tried my best to get through tactics ogre but... I found it pretty boring. I usually like tactics games too.

>> No.1660327

I forgot Energy Breaker.

Alcahest is like what a jrpg for people who hate jrpgs would feel like. It's very arcade-y and short, but still has all the main tropes of the genre.

Dragon Quest 3 embodies everything that makes the genre enjoyable, all of the rpg cliches started with that game and it even has a bit of a shallow character and team building. You can make a team of all female mage fighters if you want.

Live a Live is a lot of fun if you're into 90s anime.

Are you sure you mean tactics and not Battle Ogre?

SMT is cool because it's difficult. And fucked up.

>SMT is cool because it's difficult.

That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. Why don't you actually try playing the games before talking about them?

>> No.1660347

>>1660335
Welp, it's been a while since I last played it.

Usually in these threads someone suggest Chrono Trigger and FF6 for the millionth time and then someone else comes and whines about how all you do is heal and mash attack, so I'm trying to be creative here.
I'm curious now, what exactly is wrong with SMT though?

>> No.1660350

>>1660329
No I meant tactics. I've played Ogre battle and I really liked it. Tactics ogre seemed kinda bland but maybe it's cause I had already played FFT and other cool tactics games first.

>> No.1660354

>>1660350
Worst thing about Battle is having to wait until your troops finish moving, and how if you level up too much you're locked into a bad end I think.

>> No.1660360

>>1660347
SMT2 specifically has horrible balance and tons of mindless backtracking.

>> No.1660379

I only played the first one.
Anyway you were right, I was thinking of Strange Journey when I wrote that.

>how all you do is heal and mash attack

Almost every turn based RPG is like that.Once you've figured out the optimal way of destroying enemies, the game becomes a boring chore when you grind to level up.

>> No.1660440

>>1660430
Which is why clever games like FF5 keep giving you new skills and gimmicks to play with to keep things interesting.

You could say all arcade games are repetitive. Once you figure out the most optimal route to get through a stage or boss it becomes a boring chore until you build enough memorization and muscle memory to get through unscathed.

>> No.1660473

>>1660440
except ff5 isn't interesting because there's no real choices to be made

ff5 is like a racing game where you have a dozen different high-end racing cars to choose from, with extensive customization, and when you finally start a race it turns out all of your opponents are driving golf carts

>> No.1660491

>>1660473
Eh? You mean the game is too easy or something?
I don't think so, mang.

>> No.1660506

>>1660491
easy and not fun

>> No.1660518

Lufia 2 is fairly easy as well but it's got the tower to add some challenge and bonus stuff to the game

>> No.1660534

>>1660506
Well, I thought ultima weapon was pretty challenging, not?

I don't care, it's been years since I beat it and I don't remember well enough to say things in its defence.
I still think it's the best (the only good?) Final Fantasy gameplay wise, you just hate jrpgs.

Me too. I have a hard time not training Lenna in Ninja just because the sprite is so great, even if everything else I give her is caster-focused.

Dat high ponytail.

My only gripe with SD3 were the fucking player's hitboxes.
Just TRY to hit something with characters like Kevin and Duran.

>> No.1665863

For me it was Uncharted Water 2.

Honorable mentions- FF6, CT, Treasure of Rudras, and SD3.

>> No.1665904

>>1665863
This. This this this. Uncharted Waters 2 is by far the best RPG experience on the SNES.

Lufia 2 is awesome and CT is fun, but they can't compare with the freedom of UW2.

Metal Max Returns
I'm looking for some more less known snes rpgs(especially turn based) Most of these threads seem to have the same ones. Maybe I'm just finally at the point where I'm running out of rpg's to play.

seiken densetsu 3 is probably best if you're in it for a real treat.

I think turn-based gets boring real fast

>> No.1666843

>>1665657
I agree. since it's also turn-based somehow, cool down between attacks comes off as retarded.

Duran always sinks his head and sword so retard enemies can smack you on purpose. it looks fucking stupid.

>> No.1666845

>>1660285
Lufia is one of these games I would have enjoyed and endured as a teen but honestly it grows old pretty quickly. the battle system is too simple and progression lacks creativity and charm as well. might as well play zelda then.

>> No.1666893

While I like those Mana games, they don't feel like real Action RPGs to me. The hitboxes are overly wonky, the cooldown slows things down and magic hits no matter what.

i play it again after many years now, i fucking love it, it is way better than ff6 (europe).
lufia 2 by far the best rpg for snes.
