Well that was severely underwhelming. I can see why you guys thought as lowly of it as you did when I mentioned starting it. The Super Shotgun is life and olev, and the new enemies were neat additions (but FUCK Archviles, man, seriously), but other than a couple select urban levels, Doom 2 was seriously underwhelming.

So what's next? plutonia.wad, or tnt.wad? I'm saving Doom 64EX for last.

Plutonia for a stark difficulty increase and much better map design

TNT for something a little different, difficulty is moderate but consistent. Level designs have a different style from doom1/doom2

Of both Final Doom wads tnt is the weakest one. Some neat levels, but so many hitscanners. It gets old fast.

One of the complaints i've heard for Doom 2 was that most of the maps were shit, and that the only good ones were made by John Romero who was too busy deathmatching in Doom with all his fans.
I really like the guy. But there's some stuff I really wish he hadn't done. Hell, part of me wants to say that the fact that he left id software after Quake came out in '96 was what cause the company to slowly go downhill, leading all the way to RAGE and Carmack leaving the company. I guess good things don't last forever... But that's a lie, because the modding & online communities for Doom are still very active to this day. I doubt there will ever be any other game that will match Doom's success. I don't mean in number of sales either, but how the game is still popular to this day. Maybe not as much as it used to be, but it's alive. If it wasn't for the fact that the game was made so goddamn moddable, it probably would've not been nearly as successful. Pretty much infinite replayability.

It's a decently made level, the guy who made it gave a decent dev statement about the it and what things mean and all that.

Just go there yourself and check it out sometime and realize it's not the necronomicon people make it out to be. If they are shooting plasma shots or something then that's going to hurt too much too fast.
So at best you're going to end up with reskins of Doom demons but now they're humans.

There are also graphic packs out there that outfit the marine player skin with all the different weapons like the pistol and plasma rifle.

As far as I can tell there are two ways to balance having a majority of hitscan enemies:

1) Give you regenerating health so that getting immediately shot from around a corner doesn't punish too badly: see Project MSX.

2) Give enemies an audio cue and animation cue before opening fire to give the player a chance to either prioritize enemies or run to cover. See: Goldeneye/Perfect Dark

I'd suggest the second option if you're just wanting to revamp enemies.

I really and truly hate to say it, but you're gonna be disappointed in Doom 64. It's fucking beautiful and everything in it has a metric ton of thought behind its' design, but the size limitations of what the 64 could handle hampered the game, so it winds up being like the angels of the Hellboy universe: perfect in everything that it is, but incomplete in everything that it should be.

I know they won't, though. Reboots of classic old games always fuck up somehow. Look at the recent Thief. What a disaster. I imagine that's going to be the equivalent of DOOM when it arrives.

Also, I read that they scrapped work on it (work having started since '08) and restarted after Carmack left id (2013). Now, no one who had or has any hand in DOOM before is working on this game. Not to mention Bethesda. They're probably going to make this another DOOM3.

can somebody download this and just see if when you load it up in vanilla doom, the wall with the barrel in front of it shows a texture of falling water?

then go to level 25 and see if the same occurs there where the falling blood texture would normally be?

it works for me but i get this error in doombuilder 2 (pic related) because the water texture replaces the blood texture (as this is for vanilla doom compatability, it's not like zdoom where you can just throw new textures in) and i'm not sure if i've cocked it up or not

no it's frustrating because adding new textures to vanilla is easy but you've got this idea it's impossible and i can't explain to you how to do it using slade because i don't use slade :-)

a very brief introduction to how doom does textures:

"patches" (graphics) are added as lumps to a wad. the textures you put on walls are composed from one or more of these patches.

- a texture definition is its name, size (width x height) and then a list of patches with offsets from the top left corner of the texture

- often a texture is composed from one single patch, the same size of the texture placed with no offset

- also, often, the texture name in TEXTURE1 is the same as the patch (lump) name, this can be confusing i suppose. this is the case with BFALL1-4.

the texture definitions are compiled by a wad editor into lumps named TEXTURE1 and PNAMES. you shouldn't have to care how this is done. the one thing you do have to care about is that vanilla will only read one of these pairs of lumps, so you have to have all the IWAD texture definitions copied into it as well as your own additions.

for example to create a waterfall: say you have WFALL1-4 graphics, each 64x128, blue versions of BFALL1-4. you add these as patches, then add textures also named WFALL1-4, with the corresponding patch placed at (0,0). you should also select the option "import textures from IWAD" (or similar, i don't know what it's actually called).

Can somebody tell me why the fuck I'm doing this?

So far it seems a lot tougher than Wolf3D - ammo seems scarcer at times and there's not a lot of open areas around, so the rocket launcher and flamethrower stand-in can't really be used. The enemies can still take off over 70% of your life in one shot if you're unlucky, so that's still a constant problem, and this level has a bunch of tough hitscan motherfuckers behind barrels (so once again I'm restricted to hitscan only myself) and introduces a new, even tougher enemy type that nearly oneshotted me inside a hallway where I wasn't expecting it in a little nook to the side.

Shit's tough, man. It showers you with extra lives, but the game doesn't seem balanced for pistol starts (every few levels, I notice one where it's pretty much impossible to get through without some powerful weapon - open area with tons of hitscanners), so you might as well just save after every level and reload.

collisions between a hitscan (e.g. a BFG ray) and a target mobj (thing, actor) are detected by testing for intersection between the hitscan and a line crossing the target mobj's bounding box square.

in vanilla, one line segment is tested, between the two diagonally opposite corners of the target most perpendicular to the incoming hitscan trace. for example a trace coming from below and to the right of the target (as seen from above) would be tested against a line crossing from the bottom left to the top right of the target's bounding box square.

furthermore the intersection will not be detected unless it is in the same 128x128 blockmap square as the target's center point. this causes the phenomenon of hitscans apparently passing through the edges of targets; e.g. the imp in the exit room on map01 often takes two shells to kill if you attack it directly from the south as it stands exactly on the division between two blockmap squares, so half your shell pellets go straight through it.

zdoom improves this collision detection in two ways: firstly instead of testing one diagonal line crossing the target it tests all four sides of the targets bounding box (so it's doing 4 intersection tests)

secondly zdoom enhances the blockmap so that the target is present in all blockmap squares it overlaps, not just the one its center point is in. so there is no chance of a stray ray passing through the edge of the object.

this is much easier to explain with diagrams but i am too lazy to draw them right now. plus all this is probably on doomwiki.org somewhere (and if not, it certainly should be!)

I'm not entirely sure about freelook, but Vanilla style Doom could surely be done.

It has a thumb-pad you could use to move back and forth with, to turn with, L+R could be used to strafe, D-Pad would be used for weapon selection, A or B would be used for shooting (maybe Secondary Attack if there's Decorate support), X and Y could be use key, and I guess a jump button (again, for wads that support it), the touch screen would have the status bar, as well as your automap, you could conceivably use it for freelook, but you'd essentially need three hands for that, unless maybe you have buttons/fields on the screen for shooting/use-key or something.

Really? You could use it for so many cool things, like portable medkits, hand grenades and weapon attachments, such as a silencer, or perhaps a bayonet.

Portable medikits can break the balance of maps pretty bad. Bringing extra portable 300 health points to a battle when the mapper didn't wanted it is really not a good idea. But I do have some ideas for a bayonet.
The alt fire is basically a fire-selector. You can either hold the fire button and fire at normal automatic speed, or fire on a semi-auto mode that can fire as fast as you can click. But I am already thinking about removing the auto fire on ADS mode.

It's already done. The Mastermind also can stomp you if you run directly into it's legs.

Personally, I think it's a largely interesting effort, that has taken questionable turns at points, dipped in quality, risen in quality, I never liked all of it, but there were always parts I did like.

I know, but I don't think this is worth a new key. I think I will just reduce the zoom factor on the ADS mode, and make it always switch to semi-auto.

No. It will stomp you if you are in the exact place where it's going to put it's leg, doesn't matters the speed. The script is already working perfectly, but giving how confusing the Mastermind walking animation is, I will need to edit the sprites to make clear to the player when it is steping with the left or right legs. Running straight to it is almost always a good idea and will only fail if she decides to turn around on the exact moment you are close to her, and running into it from the sides has a very high chance of getting caught.

Well that actually makes pretty good sense, you probably wouldn't be firing in full-auto when using the iron-sights on a rifle anyway (cowwadoody doesn't count).

And a fire-selector isn't strictly needed for an assault rifle, the Steyr AUG lacked one for decades, it had a two-stage trigger, short pull for single-shot, pull all the way for full-auto.

This was removed in recent years in favor of a traditional selector switch, but it's a functional concept that has been fielded, so there's no reason it can't be implemented.

You know I really liked this wad, it started really nice, quite an original and interesting theme going on with some good level design ideas at the start.
Then it turned into a dozen slaughtermaps, but the kind of really not fun slaughtermaps where you find hundreds of enemies in very confined space.
I kept going anyway because I had faith, and I stumbled upon the "Gladiator" map. Now that was pretty cool.
Then more slaughtermaps; but I thought I'd keep going anyway in case another cool map like Gladiator comes. But now THIS? This is my reward? I beat the map anyway but quit at the start of the next (last?) one; the shit going on at the start of that was too much for me.

Why do people do this? They show at the start of their wads they can do good stuff and then shit on your face. Fucking trolls.

They're not 3D floors. Or portals or teleporters.

These guys behave much better than map 3D floors, and don't cause the same issues (though they have one or two of their own quirks) and don't interfere with map layout the same way and so are less of a pain to implement.

Also because of how they work, the only drain on performance is how much total area you have that uses them (unless you have like a million tiny ones) , so you could have 16 64x64 squares all at different heights, some next to "real" floors, some floating by themselves and it would impact performance exactly the same as if you had a single 3d floor that was 256x256.

These guys can also move up and down and horizontally and take the player along with them. Thus you can use them for 3D platforming, 3D elevators, and vehicles (on a preset path--at least for now--like a tram) and still be able to shoot out the side or jump out into the surrounding area unlike with skybox and moving camera vehicles.

I had the same issue. What I had to do was untick UPnP from IDE. There's likely a similar option in Doomseeker if you use it.

I have upnp disabled on the router too. I just map ports manually.
