Last night I just sat and held some of my SNES and GB carts in my hand for a minute in between play sessions and thought to myself, "This thing has weight. This thing doesn't require a protective case. This physical thing itself is a piece of art let alone the content inside. This thing is a fucking game."

What's your favorite cartridge /vr/?

I'm talking aesthetics not the games themselves.

>pic related

Idk why but, to me, Gameboy carts are the shit.

GBA carts. My only gripe with older Nintendo cartridges is that they're too prone to discoloration and stress-based damage. Case in point, the cartridge in your pic is covered with brown shit that won't simply wipe off.

GBA carts were usually black, so even if you did leave them lying out in the sun for days, you wouldn't see any discoloration.

As for the stress-based damage, this occurs when you pack cartridges together tightly, or have NES cartridges stacked together in huge piles. It causes the plastic on the sides of the cartridges to develop permanent white streaks.

N64 looks breddy gud.

If you were to ask me about something besides aesthetics, I'd say SNES because they look nice and also have great stackability.

Genesis carts are my favorite. So perfect and satisfying to put in.

Famicom carts are just fun. N64 carts always have this great weight to them.

Atari carts always have great variety in the label from publisher to publisher.

Super Nintendo carts are the worst to clean because they have so many thin little dips that you really gotta dig deep to clean in. As a person who frequents yard sales in the search of vidya, this is a problem for me that reduces my appreciation for the SNES cart.

Personally I love the carts for Game Gear. They're oddly shaped, but masterfully designed and the games they contain are often unsung quality titles of ages past. Not only that, but they're durable as hell and are big and imposing, like the Game Gear itself.

My pins on my cartridge used to get so dirty that I used to dab a cotton swab with alcohol to clean them. You'd be surprised how well that works.

They used to sell these little overpriced cleaning kits that would expressly tell you NOT to do that, but they were full of shit, it worked perfectly and I never had a problem connecting a pin to the receiver after I cleaned them with alcohol.

Occasionally the cotton swab would leave a little soaked cotton fiber residue, but that was easy to pick up out of the carriage case and so long as you were careful and brushed to contacts gently that wouldn't happen.

Later on I did have some issues with having to pin back the SNES cartridges with a folded slip of paper to press the contacts into physical contact, eventually the female connector would somehow get too "loose" and you would have to shore it up by folding a scrape of paper and bending the cartridge at an angle so that the connectors would stay in contact.

The reasons the pins collect dust is because they have a static charge, like a capacitor, and dust particles that have been in the sun too long tent to gather on things that have a slight electrical charge, like magnets, people, or the pins on your connector.

I could completely tune out my surroundings and just immerse myself, I swear, sometimes it was like the only thing I lived for was those games.

Taking them apart for a deep cleaning is a pain in the ass though, two screws outside, two more inside, take the shielding off and you can finally swap off the crap that the previous owner somehow pushed up there.

I do like the look of the cart though, I just put strips of masking tape on tops for end labels, because fuck that. The more you have, the more you probably will want to give them end labels.

In order for the front-loading mechanism to work. Nintendo redesigned the NES to look like a VCR in order to sell it to after the video game crash.
The front-loading is also the reason for the contact problems of the NES.

The original Famicom, being a top-loader, doesn't suffer from this. Famicom modules are also a lot more compact.
