1657696 No.1657696[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

TL;DR: I want high res pictures of the insides of a Sharp Twin Famicom. Also discuss other odd hardware variants.
I'm wanting to basically make my own version of the Sharp Twin Famicom, but with a third switch position for NES games. When in either NES or Famicom mode only the corresponding cart connector will be exposed, and when in FDS mode both cart connectors will be blocked.
I want to take a take a good look at the Twin Famicom PCBs so I can have the best starting point for my own PCBs. However my google-fu is not up to the task. If you have high resolution pictures of a Twin Famicom's PCBs, or don't mind taking the pictures yourself if you own the console, I'd appreciate you posting them.
I also think it could be neat to talk about other interesting hardware variants in this thread. Are there any hardware variants you really like?

the weirder one is the Sharp Titler. It can do video editing, which I think could do stuff like overlay editing onto game footage. Sounds handy for reviewers or TV shows.

Yeah, that thing is pretty strange. Something interesting about the Sharp Famicom is that there's a version (it's in my OP) with a turbo function for the A & B buttons, making this I think the only officially licensed Nintendo product with a turbo function.

No help yet, but that's cool, I'll just share another interesting hardware variant. The Sega TeraDrive was designed by Sega and Manufactured by IBM and was essentially a 16-bit PC smashed together with a MegaDrive. Among other things it shipped with DOS, and the PC and MegaDrive were integrated in such a way that you can write or modify games on the PC side and then run them on the MegaDrive, making it a kind of SDK for consumers.

Oh right, that's not /vr/ enough. There was that one huge sega saturn sound system thing that sounded a little difficult to set up, but seemed like it would be really cool if a person could get it working. Can't the remember the company that produced it, though.

I think you mean the SKC-1000.

It's neat but it's difficult to find for numerous reasons:
- japan only
- not exactly a retail unit but something sold for karaoke clubs
- original price was over 1 million yen
- weighs something like 20 kilos, so shipping price is insane

Also they boot from a SCSI hard disk, if the drives die the machine can't boot, and they die very often from what I've seen. (granted, not many hard drives can survive 19 years of usage in a club full of smokers)

I'm surprised there aren't more people at least talking about hardware variants.

The Playstation Net Yaroze is also cool. It was a fully featured SDK marketed towards computer hobbyists in Japan. The console itself had debugging features and no region lock. Programs were written and compiled on a PC and then sent over the serial port to the console. 7 However the Net Yaroze didn't have all the features of the official SDK. It was missing advanced hardware debugging, some software and certain libraries. The amount of RAM present is the same as in the regular Playstation (2MB), but code, run-time libraries, graphics and audio samples were limited to fit in the RAM since Sony didn't want people to be able to use the Net Yaroze to run burned copies of games, which is another limitation the official SDK does not have.

>> No.1660712

Well I guess all I really need to know at this point is how the hardware switches between Famicom mode and Disk System mode. Is it just multiplexers on the cart pins or what?

Actually the locking mechanism is the switch above the eject lever that also toggles the system mode between Famicom and Disk System. You can't put a disk in if it's in Famicom mode and you can't put a cart in if it's in FDS mode.
I'm refering to how the electronics switch between using the regular cart slot and the FDS RAM "cart".

I honestly can't tell if it has any lag or not. I can 1cc Keio Flying Squadron on hard mode on this TV, and I have it set to Cinema mode (not Game) pretty much always.

The internal upscaler leave a lot to be desired though. But, one day, I'll get an xrgb.

It was basically a Saturn with an internal modem. "Pluto" was just an internal codename for it at Sega of America. I think that particular console was just a gutless mockup. If anything, it might have been something like the CDX was compared to the Wondermega. Probably Navi Saturn in a smaller case, if I had to guess. I dunno why it would need a GPS, though.

Slightly off topic, but I think the main idea for the Navi Saturn (Hitachi Hi Saturn MMP-100NV) was just something for the Bippu/Vanning/Trucking zoku car subcultures famous for hanging around Japan's PA's at night.
