I've played a bunch of MSX games I have no idea the names of and Amiga games that were unreleased and sometimes untitled. MSX games are actually really cool. They and Wonderswan games make me wish I could read Moon.

This seems like a really Gen 4 thread though so here's a suggestion. It's like Tomb Raider with a sword and action RPG elements. Was supposed to be localized in the US but ended up being a little bit too late to the party.

The subtitle is "Twilight City of R'lyeh" so I'm expecting some Cthulhu shit to happen eventually (it's a game I'm playing right now).

Hrm.
Inredasting. I was writing a jRPG-style game with a friend of mine (while neither of us is bad with either skill, I'm better on the creative side of things and he's better with programming) and I came up with a similar concept so as to explain why the protagonists of jRPGs do stuff.

Basically, my idea was that the player is the player and that's it. The player is a separate, parasitic consciousness that has infected the protagonist/s and entices him/her/them into doing as the player sees fit. I got the idea from CT, which I find to be a wholly meh game, but really liked how I [incorrectly] interpreted 'the entity' discussed in-game as being the player (it's actually the planet).
The Persona games as well as the GFs in FFVIII lent more conceptual fodder to the project. These beings (Personae and GFs) are technically separate consciousnesses that inhabit the brain, mind or soul (depending on the game) of the player character, so I thought 'why not have the player character actually be one of these mostly immaterial and intangible beings?'

I refined the idea further with concepts from that demon sword game on DC then a even bit more. Basically, the player character parasite thingy in the protagonist's mind is like a schizophrenic voice that entices the protagonist to do this, that or the other rather than directly command or control the protagonist in all aspects. This would explain why the protagonist would say or do things in game that the player him-or-her-self would never actually do. Because the protagonist still has a great degree of autonomy but the consciousness has some degree of control or influence, as well.

That's deep, man. But at the same time shallow and obvious. Still, interesting ideas man. Also, I couldn't really get into Chrono Trigger either, hate the repetitiveness in jRPGs.

Anyway, on the topic, is Barver Battle Saga considered obscure? It's a Chinese or Taiwanese RPG for Mega Drive. I had a hilariusly poorly translated Russian version of it. Probably the funniest attempt at game localization I've ever seen. And the title on the box said Final Fantasy, which got me to buy it in the first place. Aside from that, it's a surprisingly solid and enjoyable jRPG with all the standard gameplay mechanics and stuff. Also, I liked the music.

Played this on Mega Drive. Not so obscure in my opinion, at least two of my friends owned a copy of this. Interesting game though, I liked the bizarre atmosphere. Also, there was a cheat code that let you play a shmup-style minigame. It looked ridiculous because it re-used the sprites from the strategy part of the game. The cheat was J00LS or Jools, and I think it was the name of one of the game's designers or something.

Only obscure in the West, it's actually from a very popular series in Japan.

One of the most interesting settings in a JRPG by far, this game takes place in 1890s USA, albeit with a very skewered(and funny) Japanese interpretation.(the earlier games in this series took place in Jipang(Japan) with a skewered western interpretation)

Actually, more than half of Fuun Kabuki Den takes place in the UK around the 1800's. Some characters have pretty fun dialogue, around this part one NPC says to the main character something in the lines of "I thought japanese people always travelled in big groups".

Though just about complete and mostly playable, it was still very, very preliminary when we stopped. We worked on it for about a year. The script's in there, artwork etc etc etc and blah blah blah but we never released it to the tubes.
If I don't have a CD of it somewhereabouts, unless the drive failed, it should be on my old Dell (remember those) at my parents' place. That machine is from 1999. My friend and I stopped working on the project in about 2001.

We did make another game and it was released on the internet and I, after posting that other post, tried to find it somewhere but the site that used to have it is no longer up and The Wayback Machine doesn't have it archived, sad to say.All for the best. It was a shitty RPG megamix with nothing new or original in it. Sonic the Hedgehog was the protagonist. No: I'm not autistic.
Various characters from various other franchises were also included. We created no Mary Sues. No characters were original save NPCs.

Tengai Makyou The Apocalypse IV. None of the games in the series except for Oriental Blue on GBA ever got translated, but there are some FAQs out there.

There are also some Tengai Makyou games on the PC Engine CD before this one, and they are great as well. TMII(pic related) was one of the most expensive games made at the time and definitely is the PCE's most popular game in Japan.

The name of the game is actually The Fourth Apocalypse. Tengai Makyou Dai Yon no Mokushiroku. It was planned as a second trilogy like Ziria, Manjimaru and Namida, but the other games never came out.

>space harrier
the two are absolutely nothing alike. Both are fucking great games of course, but gungage is more a trippy third person shooter with enough action to feel more like a run n gun.

and contributing:

Crime Crackers 2 is an awesome mech action dungeon crawler where you play as a team of high school girl space detectives. They fly around the galaxy, and go to different planets to solve mysteries and blow up a lot of robots.

It's GREAT, a little easy, and completely playable without Japanese knowledge.

Not the other poster, but if you're going to criticize someone's grammar, make sure your own grammar isn't awkward.

Although "learn" is a Middle English verb and would be regarded as irregular, we really don't use irregular endings that much these days. The problem is that these endings can't be applied consistently to every Middle English verb without making your vocabulary sound incredibly stupid. e.g. Do you also say spilt, spoilt, and so forth? If not, then you probably shouldn't insist on using learnt for that matter. Making these verbs regular (e.g. with the -ed suffix) would be much less awkward.

I'm not great with emulation and all that, so it took me forever to track this down and even longer to get it to work. Probably be easier for other people, if you're interested hunting it down.

It's a click-and-go adventure game from '95, dated as hell, but with an extremely interesting concept. While playing through an original, very classically styled thriller story, you wake up each night and find items that send you into three of Edgar Allan Poe's murder stories, once from the perspective of the murderer and once from the perspective of the murdered.

Graphics are mostly Claymation, with some paintings here and there. Overall I'm very glad I went out of my way to find it. Very unique, and something unusually mature about it. Doesn't approach Poe in usual, "I heard about Poe in Jr. High and have been pretending to understand/give a shit about his work ever since" kind of way. I'm not even that nuts about Poe, but I can still appreciate it.

Well, the game is about investigating mysteries in the city, you need to get the info at school and then if you triggered the event correctly you can investigate it, some of them are actually true and others are just false rumours. In one of the urban legends you have to investigate an appartment from a guy that dissapeared, it turns out that the guy was actually hiding himself on his appartment because the yakuza were after him.

I emulated this on Kega, and recently picked up the system/game, and it runs SO MUCH SMOOTHER and actually kinda faster on the actual system.

Emulated I found it ran Wonder boy kinda speed, but on the system it's more gunstar heroes speed. If that makes any sense. Maybe I needed to change some settings in kega though? It seems way faster/smoother on the actual sega cd.

Nanotech.

It was a super-simple blocky 3d platformer from the mid 90s. They got away with the graphics by calling it nanotech and saying it was micro-sized. I remember it having a decently unique soundtrack. I havnt been able to find it for download or anything about it in years. Sometimes I wonder if it was a student demo or something.

the cube video reminded me a lot of it graphically, but it was even more simple. Black backgrounds. Rotating pyramids, etc.

Not sure how obscure these games were internationally, but in my corner of the world at the time they were dust in the wind.

V-2000
3D vehicle combat/rescue, awkward to get the hang of the over-sensitive flying controls, which the terrible draw distance did nothing for, but a very satisfying game to get right - shifting between flight and skimmer mode to skid around, and manually aiming your guns was a cool bit of simlite micro. PS1

Star Wars
Might be underrappreciated as opposed to be obscure, I think it gets overshadowed by the Super Star Wars series and more contemporary games. But it's a tight platform/vehicle sim full of neat ideas (the asteroid sequence, the trench run) that makes you feel like you're playing this huge space adventure. Not a MVania, but the huge levels can get mazey and the character switching - Han, Luke or Leia - keeps it fresh. Also the best lightsaber in any pre-3D Star Wars game. NES

Machine Hunter
Twin stick shooter with no sticks, but a neat gimmick about possessing damaged enemy robots. Makes you think more about target priority than the average blastathon, and the levels had a good amount of exploration value. PS1

>> No.1659269

>>1659262
Also, Die Hard Trilogy 2. It tried to a bigger, flashier more coherent vision of the 3-games-in-1 shtick of the original but lost something along the way. The original's simplicity was part of its charm and I think DHT2 suffers for its attempts at pushing various envelopes; but it's endearing enough in its own way. I used to play it back2back with DHT1 and they flow well enough into each other. Shame the driving levels still suck. PS1

There's a rumor going about that Gaijinworks may be picking up the game/already have.

It's one of those things where even Princess Crown hadn't even seen a project until last year. There are people over on GBATemp interested though. It's just that games remade to fit the PSP seem to be a bit stranger to work with (as neither of those games are actual ports, which I later learned after a few misunderstandings).

Manjimaru is easily the most popular out of the series though which isk ind of visible when it's more popular amongst Dragon Quest fans than it is Final Fantasy fans. Thing is, the games don't really try to be super comedic up until Fuun Kabuki Den (since Kabuki himself was so widely received in Manjimaru) and later Apocolypse IV. The humor before that was a little bit more tongue-in-cheek while in this one, you go down to Arizona and there's a "Debu"/Fatty Cult There's also a hippo enemy with a peace sign and the word FUCK written right on it.

You also have animated cutscenes like in this vid, at 7:30:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kjnUahFKDdE

Apocalypse IV sees a lot more flare over here because it has the best presentation out of the 2D games in the series (3D being Namida and the Ziria remake, while the Manjimaru ports for GCN and PS2 are Grandia/Xenogears-ish in presentation).
The musical numbers are also fantastic.

Ziria is a good one, but the first two games themselves feel pretty long in comparison to III and IV.

>>1655775
The subtitle is actually romanized as "The Apocolypse IV" on official materials like the artbook, so I think it's fair to stick with the designer's intentions. Once I get back to my house, I'll try to start a thread and translate some things like character bios and such from the artbook, if anyone's interested. I'd rather not scan it as it's a pretty hard to find book and I don't want to fuck up the spine, but I'll try and take nice photos or something.

I expected it to be something disturbing, or a virus. But really it was just some short shitty first person artsy game made for some competition.

Little Magic, for SNES / GBC (there is an unrelated NES game with the same name). SNES version is probably superior because you can view the entire level at once, but gameplay and levels are identical (and personally I liked the gbc sprites more). There is a translation patch out there, but it isn't necessary at all for the gameplay.

GOAT-tier puzzle game. Think Adventures of Lolo, but with fewer types of enemies and more advanced usage of the core mechanic.

This game also has one of the best difficulty curves I've ever seen in a puzzle game of this type. Several levels in I started to realize the power of the main mechanic and what could be done with it, and I was pleased that the game forces you to pull off increasingly advanced maneuvers all the way up to the last level (100 levels).

All in all, I'd definitely say it is better than Lolo 1-3. Never played eggerland, but I plan to soon.

Yeah, it blended perfectly with the whole "The Revolution is Now" flavor of the original Playstation, and it used SNES style effects (scaling/rotation/trandparency) but cranked up way higher than what the SNES hardware could do and JRPGs were way less common here so a real fan would play every single one and the gimmicks were enough to make us think that was the future of JRPGs then FF7 blew our minds.

This is a very unfriendly game.

I have a friend who used to work at a used game speciality store and he would have to explain to many customers that this is NOT pac-man that you would typically see on the shelves.

This game will force you into a very serious and unforgiving process of trial and error until you have perfected it. Any level where pac-man is on a vehicle or object is a pain in the ass. Using his orbs can be a major kick in the balls especially when you need him to eat shit on the screen.

It's never entertaining when you are pointing at shit for him to do and he isn't in the mood. It's like pulling teeth babysitting this guy.

This game shouldn't be streamed, recorded, or shared for entertainment.

Pac-man 2: The New Adventures is only played to end a personal grudge against the game, never for enjoyment.

>People claiming all Saturn games are obscure
>People claiming smash hit arcade games from the 80s and 90s are obscure
It's the generation gap with older gamers having to explain things to younger ones. We're just starting to get heavier and heavier levels of 4chan style adversarial interaction as the board gets older and older.

In the beginning we "older" (30s even late 20s) gamers would nicely tell our stories to the teens and they were generally serious gamers who were happy to absorb the true flavor of back then from us.

Some threads still manage to be largely that kind of interaction... But not many.

The origin of Captain Commando as a character predates his appearance in his self-titled game. In the packaging and manuals of many of Capcom's earlier titles for the Nintendo Entertainment System in North America released between 1986 and 1989. All of Capcom's games released for the NES between 1986 and 1988 (1942, Commando, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Mega Man, Trojan, Section Z and Gun Smoke) were released as part of the "Captain Commando Challenge Series" and featured a drawing of the Captain on the back of the packaging, which depicted him as a "futuristic" space hero wielding a raygun on each hand and two large medallions around his neck with the letter "C" engraved on each. Each game's instruction manual also featured a "Special Message" from the Captain addressed to the owner of the game, congratulating the player for purchasing one of Capcom's products. Additionally the instruction manual for Section Z identified the otherwise nameless player character as being Captain Commando himself.

It's true, man, the japs do this weird portmanteau of words using the initiating sylables of two words to create a third one.

It's not meant to be a military designation, it's supposed to be a play on words using the name of the company.

The reason this whole thing is dumb is because this is an obscure games thread and you're insisting on going on and on about shit that isn't obscure to anybody who was there or really anybody who's a serious hobbyist.

This is the kind of thing you miss out on when the extent of your knowledge comes from playing ROMs (without packaging or manuals or even cover illustrations) on emulators - probably for consoles only and missing the arcade experience completely.

Getting back on track. Here's Darkmere. It's an Amiga game (maybe on Atari SEs too?) that I remember really wanting to play and hoping it would be ported. It's basically just a fetch game with some kinda clumsy combat. Diablo is the singularity point for these kind of "isomorphic 3D" games but they used to be everywhere. Equinox and Solstice are the least obscure examples but if you like those type of games there's an immense amount of them to be discovered on retro computers.

Prehistorik on the Commodore CDTV. The game's not much fun, so I haven't completed it, but I have played it.

I really want to get some of the European gaming computers from back in the day. They had so many good games back then.
