I have a fat PS2 and a Playstation, both of which I want to play imported Japanese NTSC games on. Both consoles are PAL.

I used to have a Swap Magic that I used with the PS2 but I lost it moving houses, and I don't think it worked for PS1 games. Anyone have advice on what the best solution for me is? I'm open to mod chip/soft mod/disc swap or whatever else works and is still purchasable - I did some Googling and it looks like this market has become much smaller than it was when those consoles were modern.

Honestly, I'd look into buying a Japanese console. It would be less hassle, not too much of a pain, and they're not exactly in high demand among resellers who are wanking over 4th gen.

In all honesty, the cheapest and most practical solution would be to get an actual PS1. I'm not sure how they're priced in Europe, but in the U.S. you can get used PSOne models for $30 USD. I think the swap disc I bought for mine was around $6.

This is considering I own a PS2 Slim, as well. PS2s are notoriously problematic when it comes to PS1 games, because the laser lens often goes out of alignment or otherwise stops reading PS1 games when it's about to burn out. It's becoming difficult to find used PS2s that can still use their backward compatibility anymore, unless you want to try replacing or servicing the laser lens yourself.

For the PS2, check out Free McBoot. You don't need much to get it started, and if you set it up right, you can play PS1 games as well.

I don't think you can boot PS1 games from external storage, though. If you PS2 can't read CDs, then you're shit out of luck.

PSXLAUNCHER.ELF is the best option. Go buy some cd-r's.

You can, but the game will have to be loaded into an emulator (i.e. not the ps2's ps1 compatibility). PS1 emulators for PS2 aren't very good.

the fat ps2 can use the hdd to boot games, but the slim can only do it through usb. The compatibility is pretty good, but not 100% There's a good compatibility list somewhere on some fucking anime site, just google for it.

But only PS2 games.

It can do it through SMB too. (iso's in your pc accessed from ps2 through LAN)

PSXLAUNCHER.ELF doesn't work on all models. If you've got one of the earlier models you're shit out luck, no PS1 games. OP, do some Googling and compare your serial number before you just go ahead and try this or you might be setting yourself up for failure.

I understand the pain of having a PS2 can cannot play PS1 backups.

Do what I did, and buy a debugger/TEST console. They play backups, beta shit, and they're regionless. Win-win.

Pic related, it's mine.

Pretty sure it does, but I don't have any to test it with, so I can't give you my word on that.

Easily fixed on any TV made this century: switch aspect to "Zoom" on a 4:3 display or 14:9 on a widescreen display. Fixes both letterboxing and aspect deformation.

For PS1 the best way to play imports is definitely a mod chip. They are cheap, easy to get and relatively easy to install. The MM3 or the Mayumi are the preferred choice.

There are loads of options for playing backups on a PS2, but few for playing real imports. A mod chip might work, but installing them on a PS2 is much more difficult. A Japanese PS2 is a viable option.

Not that guy, but I play games over SMB and have had close to zero issues with games.

The closest thing to a problem would have been setting it up, since OPL is really vague when it comes to connection errors.

Yeah thought so
It's basically the only problem i ever had with it, its a complete pain in the ass to set-up
