How is Breath of Fire 2? I'm making a list of VC games to download and I'm stuck on whether to try this or not. A quick Youtube tells me that fans have mixed reactions to it

Most of the problems with the game revolve around it's shitty localization when even managed to get yes and no wrong, and it wasn't improved in any further releases. There's a fan translation patch though.

Loved everything about the game on my first playthrough except the bullshit random-battle-encounter rate.

You'll get really frustrated in some dungeons when you get into random battles every two steps or so.

The game itself is great and it's atmosphere feels really dark since you'll go through politics, religion, death, rape, jk no rape but the world does feel really spooky sometimes.

Don't equip the Collars on Katt, Bow or Sten.
They are cursed items that fucking DOUBLE the number of random battles. (They are useful if you need to grind up, but having a random battle every 3 steps can be fucking unnerving.)

The story is, at least without a patch, chaotic, nonsensical, you spend most of the time having no idea what the fuck is going on - even more so than in standard RPG fare, I mean. Lufia 2's story unravels at lightspeed in comparison.

The sizable character selection is pointless, as most PCs are useless, your standard party is established REALLY early on.

Oh, and there's a missable game-winning item without which you can basically forget about beating the final boss.

I suppose it's not technically a waste to buy it on VC - simply because it's not exactly expensive -, but the likelyhood of actually getting a decent amount of entertainment and fun out of playing the game is... Slim.

It's alright, not what I would call great.

The game's biggest problem, as others have said, is its terrible, terrible translation.

I owned it for the SNES as a kid and never beat it. It was way too confusing and the dialog never makes any sense and I never had a clue where to go next.

I picked it up on the GBA later in life and managed to beat the game. I don't recall what the differences were, but I suppose it was cleaned up enough to make it beatable (or maybe I just had a higher tolerance for obscure objectives).

There's some stuff worth seeing, but don't feel too bad if you miss it. BoF didn't really become good until 3 and 4.

Recently played this on OG hardware a few months ago for the first time. The translation is a bit rough but the other anons here are grossly over exaggerating how bad it is. I never had any issue on where to go next and the only yes/no mix up is when talking to the lead shaman bitch and she asks you if you know how to do the combining. She asks this same prompt every time you talk to her so it isn't like the yes/no mixup can cause you to miss anything or otherwise fuck up your game in either way.

Capcom was always known to be lazy as fuck with translation. It shows even worse in GBA BoF1; In Japan they added in names for the nameless soldiers for better identification, but this was completely removed everywhere else thanks to copypaste translation.

The other proof how bad is the original according to retranslation fans is seen when you get Anfini. It is the second and the last yes/no mix up where you don't lose anything if you chose wrong since chosing in jrpgs' dialogs is generally a filler and BoF series isn't a special snowflake. Dragon clan guy asks to listen to other dragon clan guys and then asks if you have listened to all of them via Yes/No. It is where it happens.
