Sup /vr/, I'm looking for games in the "fast-paced action sidescroller/platformer" genre, like Ninja Gaiden, Shatterhand, Batman and Vice: Project Doom. NES is preferable but I'll accept Genesis and SNES games as well.

Do these kind of games have a specific genre name? Or are they ust "action platformers?"

Shadow of the Ninja

It's made by the same group that did Shatterhand, and is a lot like Ninja Gaiden in some ways. In fact, when the company developed a gameboy version, Tecmo bought it and turned it into Ninja Gaiden Shadow. Challenging, but short.

Rygar

Action adventure with metroid-like progression. While not as fast paced as the other games mentioned, it suits your other credentials. It also has light rpg elements. It's very difficult, and I'd recommend using savestates for a full playthrough, but don't abuse them.

Getsufuu Maden

Action game made by Konami. There's an English translation out there, but you can play it just as easily without understanding Japanese. The combat kind of reminds me of the nes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, but the control is a lot cleaner. Unless you have a pipeline for obtaining Famicom carts, you'll definitely need to emulate.

>I'd recommend using savestates
I'd recommend against using savestates, because it undermines the whole point of playing a challenging game.

The whole point of playing a challenging game is overcoming it's challenge. There's nothing else. Beating it is only an end in itself in cinematic experiences. Actual video games consist of an obstacle, a set of rules and tools, and overcoming the obstacle by following the rules and using the tools. If you simply remove the obstacle by arbitrarily augmenting rules, you're ridding yourself of the only meaningful aspect of the experience.

This. The only time using save states in a game is suitable is when the game uses some complicated passcode system.

>> No.1630875

Right. The goal of challenging games is not to beat them, but to master them. Once you beat them, then you try to beat them without using a continue (aka one-credit), then if possible you one-life them, and then if possible you try for a no-hit run.

Why would you play an old NES game for the story? That's like wiping your ass after taking a piss..

Sure, just beat Rygar in one sitting...

Generally, what you said is correct but Rygar is long and does not allow any saving whatsoever.

I'd say use savestates in Rygar, but only when you stop playing and then pick up where you left off.

Same goes with e.g. the first MegaMan.

>> No.1634414

>>1634397
I actually agree with everyone I quoted. What I detest is the general attitude that there's no point in playing a game unless you play it the way it's meant to be played. You claim that the only other redeeming feature of an NES game (once you make the gameplay trivial) is the story. I argue that one can find plenty of enjoyment in the experience of playing through alone, and that difficult gameplay gets in the way of that.

If someone has fun and gains lots of enjoyment playing through this way, what's wrong with it? Seriously, I think that's what this argument boils down to: why do you hate freedom?

Guy who posted Rygar here. First off, I now know that if I ever want to troll /vr/, I should bring up savestating.

My point was that Rygar doesn't have much in the way of a continue system. And unless you have the time to sit for several hours to complete the game, you should use savestates so you can tackle it a section at a time. I agree that abuse can ruin the experience, there seems to be some confusion between the difference of savestating vs. savescumming. If you're reloading after every hit you take you're not playing a game, you're having a tour.

Any NES game that takes longer than an hour to complete and has no continue or a poor password system can benefit from savestating. It all depends on how much time you can devote to it.

That said, continue arguing about it if it pleases you.
