I like both. That's why I have an AV modded Toploader and I'm going to RGB mod my AV Famicom.

Functionality but if I particularly dislike a design of a model I'll go for a different one solely due to the aesthetics. For example I'd never use a genesis model 3 over a model 1 or 2 (which both look nice in my opinion) or for a less /vr/ related one both PS2's would be nice and the first two versions of a PS3 are good but I'd never touch that weird super-slim thing.

>> No.1629208

it's not a clearcut dichotomy with standard NES VS toploader, since the toploader is superior in how it holds the cart. with it av modded, it wins the functionality contest hands down, especially when you note the dogbone controller.
I prefer the aesthetic of the classic NES, personally, which I suspect puts me in the minority.

I think most of the people here like the aesthetics of the classic NES better. I like the Toploader better, but after getting a hold of a dogbone controller after all this time I can definitely say I prefer the original controllers better. The dogbone controllers felt good when I was a kid, but they feel too small in my hands as an adult now.

You're the one shitposted something that had nothing to do with the OP.

Also, where does the SNES 2 fall in this? Is it better aesthetically than the original? Is it like the top loader NES which guarantees a game to work every time? Does the lack of an eject button hurt it?

>> No.1629256

Functionality.
I like the Famicom/PAL SNES design, but I imported a SNES Mini because it's all-around better.

>Is it better aesthetically than the original

What the fuck do you think? No seriously, it's all a matter of opinion.

It's smaller, it's lighter, it has superior video quality but can't output RGB natively, it has no eject button, it has no LED light, it won't turn yellow over time. Those are the only differences. Overall it's better.

>> No.1629364

>>1629331
>it has superior video quality but can't output RGB natively
1CHIP SNES's have just as good of video and have RGB onboard, and they have better audio quality. You can also get 1CHIP SNES in Japanese, North American, and PAL variants, so if you hate the North American version's aesthetics you can always get the Japanese one for NTSC.

Also, all SNES's have the vertical line issue in dark games like Super Metroid. 1CHIP and SNES 2's both still have this problem to a minor degree. Only early Japanese consoles don't have this issue.

>it won't turn yellow over time
All SNES's yellow because all of them have flame retardant in the plastic. Later original SNES's, 1CHIP SNES's, and SNES 2's were made after they fixed the flame retardant mixture so they don't yellow as quickly as the earliest SNES's.

They don't, actually. A lot of times you'll see bad vertical bars in the picture, particularly with FF6. The Mini doesn't have this problem, and the colors are better too.

>they have better audio quality
The audio is identical. I have no idea where you're getting this.

>> No.1629373

I have both NESes

The toploader doesn't have AV input, so I use the toaster.

I would actually be greatly interested in a modded toploader or some other mod that would play the games 100% of the time

I've had my 1CHIP SNES and my friend's RGB modded SNES 2 and tested them out on my PVM monitor. There is no video quality difference in any of the games we tried on them, including FF6. Both of them have the vertical line issue. My early Super Famicom is the only system I've tried that doesn't have that problem.

>I honestly don't see a difference
That's the point I was making about the video quality between the 1CHIP and SNES 2, and that you don't have to mod a 1CHIP for RGB. I supposed that doesn't matter if you just want composite video.

He bypassed the RGB amp on both the Mini and 1CHIP, apparently destroying the vertical line issue. That being said modding it like this is a royal pain in the ass and not worth it at all.

Someone will eventually make an RGB board like they did for NES and N64, surely.

Really?
Doesn't look very difficult overall. Hardest part would probably be soldering the amplifier chip

>>1629440
Finding a 1CHIP SNES is the hard part. You can never really tell without opening the thing up.
Probably better to just buy a SNES Mini, because you can at least be sure it'll output RGB with a little modding.

It's hard to say. The first model of the Genesis is the best, and that's what I own...but what if I want to get a Sega CD? Supposedly the Model 2 not only has less moving parts so it's less likely to break over time, but the load times are a bit shorter.

But come the fuck on, LOOK AT THIS. Model 1 GEN with a Model 2 SCD looks weird, but this...THIS.

Agreed. The issue isn't that annoying and I only really notice it when I'm looking for it. I'm honestly dreading when I finally do RGB mods for my AV Famicom and PC Engine Super CD-ROM2.

>>1629459
Well, all SNES1's have RGB. It's just the early ones don't have as good of video as 1CHIP and SNES 2's do.

And finding a 1CHIP isn't that hard. You can eliminate the earlier CPU-01, GPM-01, and GPM-02 models by looking at the model number, the eject lever, and the insides of the cartridge slot without opening it. You'll have to open it up though to tell the difference between the RGB-01, RGB-02, and and 1CHIP, though.

I'm lucky in that the SNES I bought back in 1997 was a 1CHIP

>>1629491
I've been trying to find the site where I read that the audio was best on 1CHIP's, but I can't seem to find it. In any case, I know it's not a drastic difference like the various Mega Drive/Genesis revisions.
