Lets discuss /vr/ related media what are some of your favorites? I just watched the Fatal Fury anime s recently and was expecting total shit and was pleasantly surprised. It was actually pretty good for a video game adaptation like 7.5/10 all of em imo although the end of the motion picture is kind of a bummer Poor fucking terry man I feel so bad for him :(

Watched this recently. Was a bit of letdown. While I appreciate that they made an anime based on my favourite FF, it barely resembled anything close to the original game. If not for Chocobos, a couple screens with the original game's characters (Faris has a nude breast on one of them, go ahead and watch it now) and loose plot connections, I wouldn't even know I was watching a FFV OVA. Also the original game's characters are made out as idiots, as the OVA's plot hinges on the villain Ra Devil stealing Cid's brain to produce the Crystal's secrets, killing Mid in the process without Bartz and his friends ever reacting in any way and allowing Ra Devil to safely escape with the brain and research it for decades, later to be stopped by a bumbling generic anime protagonist with a huge katana and Bartz's granddaughter who was chosen by the crystals to contain their powers and hide them from Ra Devil, yet whose powers are limited to having her butt glow and summoning bald chocobos. Many things they could have included from the original game are turned into or sidelined in favor of fanservice (pantyshots and buttshots, the Poor Man's Dominatrix Faris' pirate captain's entire character) and stupid gags.

A 2/10 adaptation at best that doesn't have much to do with the game but a fairly fun 6/10 OVA on its own. Highlights include Tycoon's air force and Faris' nip slip. The protagonist Prettz is an okay character too.

I remember renting this many years ago, totally forgot about it until just now. I didn't even know it had to do with FFV, though I had never played it at the time so I guess I wouldn't have mattered.

It's a mixed bag, really. On the plus side you have really fine visuals, good atmosphere and a director who actually cared about the game. But then again, the story wasn't really put well into the movie and the fanboy wankerey (Pyramidhead in a movie about SH1? Nah, let's not) and typical modern movie mishaps (of course, the lead HAS to be female). But I can see why people think the movie is great since we aren't exactly spoiled with good video game movies.

Magic Knight Rayearth

It's that 90s anime which deliberately portrays itself as being like one of those 80s/90s JRPGs which themselves are inspired by a combination of anime and D&D lore.

Only watch season 1 though. Season 1 acts as a fantastic deconstruction of the 'fantasy anime' genre (at least as far as what could be said about it in the 90s). Season 2 was just padding (and rubbish padding at that), and didn't need to exist. I think CLAMP were pressured into continuing it, though, which is shit.

Naaaah. Spongebob has proper absurdist humor that plays with your expectations. The silliness works because they know how and when to place it among things that make sense, and then they move on. As opposed to something like Invader Zim, which was supposed to be funny entirely because silly characters were being silly all the time and saying silly things.

it means they pick out the common tropes of fantasy games and illustrate them very sharply. I never saw the anime, but the manga was full of slightly absurd videogame-isms. like, the girls' armors actually level up, and they get sent on fetch quests. the world is completely devoid of any towns or people, except for character archetypes (wise sorcerer who directs the hero, legendary swordsmith) who pop up and vanish, and the villians.

its not especially brilliant, since its written for middle school girls, but it is a nice alternative take on the fantasy computer games that were rampant in Japan, at the time.

Loved Fatal Fury, the SF2 movie was great(never got into the Alpha movies, actually), and SFV wasn't bad either, if you just take the whole 'Ryu and Ken as top-tier students with no starting special abilities' mindset.

Ah, I still have the original VHS.
I also have the complete Wild Arms - Twilight Venom set, got it when WA2 came out.
There's some WA2 cameos here and there, but it was a little disappointing. You can see Irving in the last cover, actually.

My local library had a FUCKTON of game-based VHS tapes back when I was a kid. I remember watching Arc the Lad (they didn't have the whole thing, though, the anime was really good, though, I should play the Collection sometime) and that Sonic movie (the one where Knuckles has a cowboy hat, don't know the name) the most.
