Can we have a thread about old games that are overlooked?

Yeah, Shatter Hand (or Shatterhand or ShatterHand) is awesome.

Tbh, Mr. Gimmick is gaining in popularity. Is it appearing in everyone's collection? No, and it isn't talked about much, but I've been seeing it more and more in those top ten hidden NES game videos or whatever, and I hear about it frequently when talking about most technically advanced NES game. Which Mr. Gimmick wins hands down.

The team behind Gimmick actually did some games for Japanese PCs that no one's played. You can check them out at Gimmick's programmer's personal page: http://www.electricsheep.co.jp/rc.html

Speaking of /vr/ Japanese PC games, three soft houses deserve more recognition: Arsys (Wibarm, Star Crusier), Exact (Aquales, Jumping Flash (and its predecessor Geograph Seal)), and Zoom (Genocide 2, Zero Divide). Really awesome, arcade-like games from each studio. The dude behind Arsys designed both the original, early-'80s Thunder Force and Omega Boost, and Exact and Zoom were informal rivals making the best games for the X68000.

are these supposed to be underrated games? I played a few of them, as a kid, and some of them were not fun. Clash at Demonhead, being one... makes me want to go back to some of these.

on the other hand, how would GI Joe be underrated? it came out at the zenith of the toy's popularity, and had a huge spread in Nintendo Power!

I agree that most of these games are Must Plays. Little Nemo is still one of my favorite games of all time.

No. The game isn't popular because it has deathly slowdown - the kind that suddenly goes back to normal, meaning you'd crash into things for BS reasons.
Hence shmup veterans ignore/despise this game.

SCAT is a sidescrolling shooter, except that instead of a spaceship you're controlling a guy and a girl using jetpacks. It's not the best of its kind, but it's really good imo; also the 2 players coop is excellent, very smooth, with little to no flickering or slow down, which for this kind of game on NES, is worth noting.

(Mr.) Gimmick ALWAYS comes up within few replies in every underrated game discussion thread (especially here on /vr/) and is a well know game but no-one ever even mentions Ufouria. In other words GImmick is an "underrated" game that is so well know there is little to no reason to mention it as everyone already knows about it.

While >>1622986 is the main point of the list it also had a subgoal of bringing up games that are lesser known and aren't mentioned that often. Then again I listed Crystalis, Guardian Legend and River City Ransom so I kinda failed on my own goals as they all are well know games that are also often talked about...

This brings up a question; IF I were to update my list should I take out the better know lesser know games or just add few games to it?

Probably because it sucks, both the gameplay and the unsightly character design. Ufouria is a D-class platformer, at best. I would hardly call it a hidden gem.

Flimbo's Quest on Commodore 64

amazing side-scrolling platformer where you keep collecting scrolls in each level to progress. a bit late in the day for the commodore though (1990) so it basically sank into obscurity. was bundled into a 4-game cart that came with commodores (and the failed C64 console) bought around 1990/91 mainly in the UK iirc so was relatively popular for a period
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0msxihp1fFQ

another late C64 title: 'Creatures'

brilliant sidescroller; though insanely long and massive for a C64 game and practically unbeatable without a lives cheat

Same with Umihara Kawase. It's great, but not underrated.

That's the problem with words like "underrated" and "overrated." The more often people say it, the less true it is.

Doesn't help that it has a quiz game and it's only released in German or Japanese. But I think it's pretty good as far as platforming goes.
