1. Chrono Trigger
2. Lufia 2
3. Super Mario rpg
4. Final Fantasy 3 or 6

6. Soul Blazer

There's like 30 of them at best, pretty hard to name the best and have variations. How about a JRPG Golden Age thread instead ?

Anyway :

Chrono Trigger
FF6
Super Mario RPG ( it would probably have been higher on that list if I knew italian )
Secret of Mana, even though I'm still incredibly bad at the game, I always get a nice mood when playing it
Illusion of Gaia, still not finished though
I remember a JRPG in which your house was burned and you had to go cross the world with someone accompanying you. What game was that ?
Lufia 2, still not finished either
Earthbound, though it really feels downright morbid at times.

None of them, honestly. Console RPGs were mostly Japanese developed and poorly localized. The only RPGs from that generation I could really get into were computer RPGs, and maybe the occasional computer RPG that saw a console port. Even then, Nintendo was enforcing such strict censorship at the time that console ports were basically slaughtered. Look at what happened to Ultima VII.

As far as SNES goes, I can get into some of the more difficult platformers like Super GnG, but that's it. If I want to play something for its story or convincing characterization, SNES definitely won't be my first choice.

Zelda's mechanics are similar to RPGs, even though Zelda typically isn't classified as such.

Link's health is represented through a value similar to HP, even though it's displayed visually in hearts. Each heart container represents a certain value. I would calculate a heart is something like 4 units of health in most cases.

Link's weapons all inflict different damage values, and enemies have specific amounts of health. Link's defense power can also sometimes be upgraded.

The only thing missing is an experience level system. It can be thought that requiring the player to go around collecting upgrades individually is still a similar procedure. You aren't stuck with the same statistical abilities throughout the entire game. If you collect upgrades, your HP (hearts) or your attack power (sword upgrades) are being increased to meet the demand of exponentially difficult enemies just like in an RPG.

>> No.1622510

>>1622506

Yes, I guess that's a good comparison. To be honest, I'm not sure exactly where the line is drawn. If these games represented their figures with terms like HP, Attack, Defense, etc. even though they involved the same procedures for upgrading them, would they be classified as RPGs then?

I didn't say Zelda was an RPG; I said it had features in common with an RPG. Zelda is strictly an action-adventure game, except for Zelda II, which I guess is classifies as an action RPG.

I suppose RPGs are more strictly defined by rules systems, like leveling up, having character statistics similar to D&D, etc. The problem is how some games blur the line between action-adventure and RPG because they have so many elements from both.

>> No.1622534

>>1622510
here's the answer.

All video games every made contain stats.
Even pong has paddle width, paddle height, paddle move speed, bounce velocity.

If you pong had you get to raise 1 of those stats every time you scored a point it would not suddenly become an rpg.

Stats actually have nothing to do with rpgs at all. You could 'role play' with 2 people where one person plays a cop and the other plays a suspect. The suspects goal is to convince the cop he is innocent. No stats of any kind are involved. This is role-playing and it can't actually be done in a video game because a video game gives you (at best) a dozen things you can say at any time. The presence of dialogue options does not make an rpg (unless you want to argue contra hardcorps is an rpg), only the absolute control of a character's entire spectrum, impossible when interacting with a computer, is role playing.

What people call 'rpgs' are just strategy games that have a heavy emphasis on exploration.

Look, games that have leveling up, stats and the standard rpg fare are RPGs but besides asthetics Zelda as a whole besides 2 isn't an RPG.

It bugs me because back in the day thats what everybody called it and I was the wrong one even though I was correct.

Let me further expand on this. I would consider Tomb Raider a true action-adventure game. You have the adventure elements such as solving puzzles and finding items or keys that allow you to progress through the story. No sense of leveling up occurs throughout the game. Aside from finding new weapons, Lara's abilities are the same from the beginning to the end of the game. She can't gradually increase her maximum health, for instance.

Now, Zelda is obviously different. Link undergoes permanent growth throughout the game. He can increase his maximum health, magic points, attack power and occasionally defense power.

>> No.1622565

>>1622554

Let's look at a game similar to Zelda, but one that's classified as an RPG nonetheless: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for GameCube. Characters don't gain any experience points and don't level up. Just like in Zelda, character health is represented in the form of hearts, and these can be increased by finding items. In fact, finding items is the only way to increase character power or add new skills, just like in Zelda.

Movement, attacking, defending and general progression are also similar. Enemies can't evade your attacks unless they actually move away from your weapon as you're trying to hit them. Damage figures aren't random, and the damage inflicted by your attacks against enemies isn't even indicated.
