Am I crazy for thinking Gauntlet 4 sounds too good to be a Genesis game?

Maybe "good" isn't quite the right word. But it sounds more clean and more advanced than what I'm used to hearing from a Genesis game. I love that dirty twang sound, but this game's BGM is pretty impressive. Did the cartridge have some kind of extra sound chip or something?

The reason the Genesis is so variable in quality is because the sound chip is an instrument, not just a sequencer for random lowfi samples, like another console.

Columns III is better for multiplayer and Columns is better for single.
I remember well this one time when I reached the maximum over-ownage of Columns.
>I had been spent the previous week practicing hard.
>Get up early in saturday to try to reach level 100.
>After some hours I reach level 80, more or less the point I always fuck my concentration. (Still haven't had breakfast)
>Hungry as fuark, I can't let myself reach the start button as it surely is going to make me lose.
>Get to level 100 first time ever, really proud of myself.
>The game right now is practically a rain of jewels masterfully placed to make a huge chain.
>But my body needs food, so I pause the game and go to eat something.
>So here I am looking the screen doubting if I should unpause because of the fear of an instant lose since I already lost the rhythm of the game.
>Unpause and get one of the biggest adrenaline rush in my life, I keep chaining like a boss.
>I decide I'll stop playing only after I got a gameover.
>That night (yeah night) my bro bring his girlfriend into our room, they chatted and cuddle in his bed... and I kept playing.
>My brother drops the girl in her's house some hours later, and upon his return -YES- I still playing.
>We are both fucking surprised at my feat, it's not even saturday anymore, he stays awake with me until the fatal mistake that gets me a lose.
>Needless to say I got the first place in the ranking.

That's one of my favorite childhood memories.

This can be discerned by the fact that
>1a) the phrase 'our room,' was used along with 'his bed' (in reference to the bed belonging to the bro) and it is exceedingly unlikely that Anon's friend lives with and shares a room with Anon.
2) As it's Anon's brother cuddling on Anon's brother's bed with a girl, it isn't unfeasible to assume Anon was, at the time, likely at an age too young to care about girls.

FM synthesis, nigga. The Genesis sound chip is based on the same method of synthesis as the Yamaha DX-7- a synth that was so complex to program, most people just used it as a preset instrument.
If you don't have at least a little background in it, shit's mad difficult to get what you want out of it. That's why you have a ton of Genesis games with shitty music and sounds that go "BLAAARGSCHKKK" without sounding anything like what they were supposed to.
You kids and your Native Instruments FM8 have it easy these days. Programming FM synthesis used to require taking notes and shit.

Galaxy Force II. The Genesis version got a lot of hate for its graphics being a far cry from the arcade version (which didn't get a proper graphical port until 10 years later on the Sega Saturn) but the music for the Genesis version is remarkably close to the arcade.

I'd take a hit in color depth and background detail and some flicker in return for hearing Toaplan's best soundtrack on the Genesis. The arcade was definitely done on a similar soundchip. Having a console port for Japan only on the Saturn would be the same as no console port to me; I'd still be emulating it. I own a Genesis, but not a modded Saturn and Saturn games cost like 599 US dollars, while Toaplan Genesis games are like...10.

The thing about GRINDSTORMER is that the Genesis version was by Tengen. Tengen sucks and is known for subpar ports (Tetris excepted). I guarantee it could have looked better. The graphics look like they were just run through directly, robbing them of color and looking washed out, rather than redone to take advantage of the Genesis (like in Hellfire!).

On the note of GRINDSTORMER, that is a game that won't make fans of the Genesis sound. While it does have good tracks, the first thing that meets your ears on Stage 1 can only be described as "noise". Typical Western developer sound. Turns out it sounds just like that in the arcade original. Shame on you, Toaplan. First stage should always give the player a good impression.

Are you sure you're not thinking of PWM that Tempo uses? PWM seems to be better sounding PCM channels but with actual mixing. Shadow Squadron for example has sound effects relative to where objects are on the screen. When an enemy ship flies by you, it pans out all realistic like using the PWM.
I feel like Super Tempo for the Saturn one uses QSound it but don't take my word for it.

What do the 32x PWM, Ricoh PCM for Sega CD (Sonic CD past tracks), and Saturn music sequenced on the 68000 have in relation to QSound? What about CD music recorded using the QSound technique and then converted to redbook audio?

That was localized in what...the last couple of years? It is a good game, but you can't really expect something like that to be widely known.

IIRC, the music is similar to SMW in that pretty much every track is a variation of the main theme.

>> No.1648034

Here's what always confused me because of my lack of understanding of how things actually worked back them:

The NES and Gameboy had like 4 channels of pulse waves. Musically, Tetris, one of the first games to come out for the Gameboy, sounds just like Pokemon, one of the later games to come out on the gameboy.

SNES used samples or whatever (I don't know) so all of it's stuff sounds the same.

Games ever since the Playstation have been using CD audio, so its music sounded like whatever could fit on the disc.

N64 game music all sounded the same because they were all limited to the same library of synth instruments it seems (for lack of better words) Perfect Dark sounds kinda like F-Zero, Ocarina of Time sounds kinda like StarFox.

The Genesis though, there's a clear difference in how the music sounds depending on what game you're playing. If you compare Sonic 1 and Ecco to Sonic 3D Blast,Vector Man and Mean Bean Machine, the difference is clear as fucking day. Sonic Spinball doesn't sound like anything else with its ear-piercing "electric guitar" stuff.

Why's different about how the Genesis does music that allows its games to sound so different from each other?

>> No.1648050

>>1648034
False assumptions there. SNES games do not use the same sample set, and generally sound very different. You can instantly tell the difference between a Capcom title and a Square one just by the sound set.

The Playstation generally uses its soundchip to play midi music. It doesn't just read tracks off the disc in most cases. This is because Playstation games are pretty big and it can't fit the highest quality music.

Genesis games, to someone who actually has played large amounts of SNES and Genesis titles, sound WAY more samey.

>> No.1648058

>>1648050
My false assumptions were from me never owning or really playing a SNES.

I played Super Metroid and like two hours of Earthbound.

>> No.1648069

>>1648050
And, from what I gather, the SNES could have more variety because it used sampled sounds, which I guess could vary from game to game.

The playstation is kind of a red herring to my question, I just mean to say that ever since the playstation, it's been possible to read the music from disc, so if Tekken needs to use the playstation's midi that's fine, but if the PS2, gamecube, xbox, etc want to go with orchestral game scores, they can and have.

My question is if the Genesis is more "chiptune" like its predecessors, how is there still so much variety, and why did that variety seem to progress over time? I get the impression that the newer the games were, the more robust the game's music was. Why does sonic 3d blast have such radically different percussion and bass than sonic 1 even though they're on the same console?

>> No.1648076

>>1648069
>Why does sonic 3d blast have such radically different percussion and bass than sonic 1 even though they're on the same console?
Because FM synthesis is the most difficult synthesis technique, and the composers and sound programmers became more skilled with experience.

>> No.1648082

>>1648069
I can answer your last question there. The Genesis has a couple channels that can be used for samples (almost always percussion or voice). Because the percussion is sampled, it can sound different from game to game, whereas the music melodies are all generated from the same FM synth.

Not all sounds alike in the SNES, although the big number of TBRPGs and their orchestral music may have you think otherwise.
They all sound muffled though.

The music is so different from game to game in the Genesis because of the sound engines each company had.
You know what a sample is. You can change the pitch and play the notes of a scale, slow it down or speed it up, like FM waves.

The difference between both is that you can "cut" a trumpet and "paste" it to the SNES, whereas on the Genesis, if you want said trumpet, you have to draw the sound wave by hand using the 2 operators per channel said console has, to mimic the original sound as close as you can.

Anyone can do the first.
For the second one, you need skill and patience. Neither of which american game devs had.

By the way, off the games you mention, you haven't played Genesis much, have you?

(and for the percussion thing, it's the only sampled thing, and it depends on where the sound was "cut" from)

I am a Nintendo fanboy and I will admit this was a VERY neat song.
I wonder why most of the Genesis' music sucked Goomba balls when the console was clearly capable to play great tunes, though.

Read the thread, it is explained in every one. A synthesizer has to be programmed. Most American devs (and the Genesis was way more popular over here) used default sound drivers called GEMS. They don't sound very good.

I read the thread, I was just stating my personal opinion.
Most decent music could only be found in japan-oonly games, while European games abused the techno music to kingdom come and american made games used to have music that sounded like tincans hitting against a rusted anvil.
It could have been awesome, it pisses me off when things that had potential end up being shit.

Well, I got news for you.. you have a limited taste in music and you have bad opinions that stifle your ability to enjoy new things. This is a fact.

The Ooze was even better, though it had less/shorter tracks. Of course, Comix Zone had a LOT of very long tunes...

You know Michael Jackson was tied to the Sonic 3 soundtrack apparently. Some people think he had a lot to do with it. He wasn't credited because of the whole pedo thing.

>> No.1649204

>>1649181
That's one theory. What I heard is he didn't want to be credited because working with pop music, he didn't like the sound of the Genesis soundchip.

While that kind of claim is liable to spark some anger in a thread like this, I would like to bring up this guy wasn't accustomed to sound chips in place of instruments, and obviously wouldn't appreciate it like we would.

I'm not sure why it would. MJ is a professional musician who has full control over his music and how it sounds. The YM2612 is a toy compared to studio equipment, respectfully.

>this guy wasn't accustomed to sound chips in place of instruments, and obviously wouldn't appreciate it like we would.
There are a lot of synthesizers and programmed drums in his music. He was accustomed to good equipment like Roland keyboards and stuff like the DX7, but not to the Genesis and it's tinny nature. You couldn't get away with the YM2612 in anything but a video game. He was serious about quality and you should respect him for it.

I am reminded that I haven't played this recently. It is good that the music is good, because the game is super easy. Fun to just chill out with the sound blasting.
