My brother and I had a pinball game for the SNES.

I think you could play as 1 of 3 people. One was a pirate and one was a clown. Not sure what the 3rd one was.

I could be totally off base. In fact the game might have just been entirely pirate themed.

Anyone have a clue what I'm talking about?

So what's the consensus here on The Pinball Arcade? How accurately do these tables play compared to the real thing?

I haven't purchased any of the table packs yet, but I have been playing ToTaN for a few weeks now. Managed to score a nice 250million a couple of days ago.

Also managed to discover a Pinball Museum around me in Asbury Park, NJ, looking forward to spending a day there on an upcoming weekend. I don't know if anyone here posting lives in that area or has any experience with the place.

But yeah, I've been pretty affected by the Pinball bug within the past few months.

I backed The Pinball Arcade very strongly for a long time, but they've disappointed me so many times now I've done a complete turn around. The machines play ok. The graphic reproductions are nowhere near the preservation quality they'd have you believe, usually they look pretty sloppy and are often outdone (graphics wise, at least) by VP tables. They are great at making promises and either not fulfilling/forgetting about them, or just taking forever to get to them, and they are great at spreading resources thin. They don't have a huge staff, but they are attempting to release on every platform and it has fucked them up. I will buy the packs the moment there is a cheap sale, because they are decent enough to play, just not sure I am comfortable throwing 100 bucks or so their way at the moment. I may have a change of heart once they introduce the new interface, and friend leaderboards. As far as closeness to the real pins, the only game I feel able to comment strongly on is BK2K and without boring you to death I'll say it's off, but not a total loss. The artwork doesn't look right as is sadly usually the case.

You need real analog motion control, I can't play on tablets anymore. Only allows violent left/right motions. You need to be able to push up on the machine too, and on the diagonals, and to slam left/right quickly like in the videos.

PS3 controller with invert nudge is the way...only problem is the drivers are cancer. Remap X360 left analog stick to SixAxis motion.

I thought I was going to have a fucking heart attack before I managed to light the locks. Well, I managed to succeed in the 5-way combo challenge on Whitewater, but not by actually doing the 5-way combo. Farsight's buggy code came to my aid for once - quickly executing two 3-way combos (in my case Spine Chiller -> Insanity Falls -> Disaster Drop twice did the trick) awarded me the goal just as well.

And that's a good thing, because seriously, the 5-way combo can go fuck itself. The way to do it is Spine Chiller -> Insanity Falls -> No Way Out -> Insanity Falls -> Disaster Drop, and the Insanity Falls -> No Way Out part is fucking impossible. I managed to do it like twice in about half an hour of concentrated trying, and those two times I was so surprised I either botched the next Insanity Falls shot (the first time) or barely didn't have enough power for Disaster Drop (the second time).

You've got a shot that gives you a quite variable amount of speed coming down, seemingly independent from exactly how you started it in Insanity Falls, and somehow you're supposed to do a backhand into No Way Out from that? Fuck that noise - that's lunacy.

You've got an insanely small window of opportunity to continue the combo, which means catching the ball, tipping the ball then catching it with the right flipper or tipping then one-timing it from the right one are all out of the question - you've got to backhand it to be able to make it in time.

Has anybody managed to do this? The entirety of the Wizard challenges for Scared Stiff and every other Whitewater challenge wasn't this dickish.

got a video encoding, a new glitch appears, some how one of the balls goes north of the bumper on the top playfield and stays there until I lost the ball I was playing and nudged it[stuck one] back into play.

another 'shot through the upper playfield' again, the right ramp into space didn't make an appearance but the ball not catching and calling attendant and one nudge didn't work.. so I had to UP/LEFT nudge and thankfully it didn't tilt me and continued on.

>> No.1649284

>>1649261
'not perfect' iirc the issues are 'air balls' and 'no spin', while there's an animation that looks like spin.. it's for show. 'The bounce' is another issue for those that play real tables have to 'un-learn' from TPA. Personally I am not sure myself if it's just modeled after new rubbers or it's exaggerated.

I hope the unity3d pinball takes off, I haven't the GPU for it atm so I cant comment on their physics.

TPA flippers basically behave like they have oly two speeds, 0 and 100%, which makes practically all flipper techniques impossible. Bounce pass is the only one that works properly because it doesn't involve moving flippers. Post transfer works because they have specifically programmed it into the game, which means that it is either way easier than in real life (the time window is huge) or it doesn't work symmetrically / at all on some tables.

In Pro Pinball: Timeshock, you can do ALL the things in this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlLjhoarx9c
The dropping speed of the flippers is faster than in the sequels (BRUSA and FJ) so it makes backhanding, cradle separation and post transfering much harder, but they are still completely doable.

That's a common misconception. Anghelo designed the entire pinball game, from concept through art through layout.

The people who get credited as "designers" are usually project leaders etc. People like Roger Sharpe who actually laid out the design for Addams Family get zero credit...only gets credit for acquiring the license. Why? Money men, copy cats, rapist communists.

Here's a hint from the Barracora information page on IPDB: "Roger Sharpe tells us that he and Steve Epstein designed this game and Barry Oursler built up the whitewood based on Roger's mylar layout."

Just like he designed the others games, and as Python did. But were they screwdriver guys? Did they attach the slingshots to the playfield? Nope, they just told Oursler where to put them...he wanted the credit more.

You think Python cares for credit? He took 32,000 dollar paycut to go from Disney animator to work on Joust...does he get credit for designing Joust? Of course not, the copy cats do.

He takes 119,000 dollar paycut to leave Williams for Capcom. John Popadiuk steals his ideas even then.

Read the Fountainhead.

Loop pass is dropping the left flipper as the ball contacts it after a chase loop, thus passing to the right flipper by dead bouncing off the left.

Works in Visual Pinball, just sends your ball plummeting down the drain in Pinball Arcade.

there's no argument which looks good, sadly I cannot record at or above 60 fps to see how/when loop passes are successful or not. At 24fps the ball has already hit the flipper between frames

I could cheat and make dxtory sync video FPS at 24/30fps but the length of the recordings is doubled and the playback gets too fast when doubled.

I'd play VP too if it would work on my system.

I just ran high definition Tales from the Crypt in Fullscreen tah-tay and it was a good 600 fps. Fan software from the 90's > everything else, always. Just go into my MAME ROMs and boom, get the table.

Makes me wonder how Pinball Arcade devs can claim their tables require 100+ MB because of their music, yet the actual sound ROMs that Visual Pinball and real machines use are 1 MB or so usually.

Because they're going and just ripping an .ogg file or whatever and including that, instead of actually emulating the sound properly (or even just using tracked music). Incompetency, basically.

so whats left on here that you thought wasn't too bad?
>I hate big shot
>AFM video mode is bothersome
>I could 'cheat' lament in Bash but still need the special
>haven't tried the rest of these yet besides victory

Out of those, I've done the following:

>White Water (tough one, took my full concentration in what must have been a 45 minute game)
>Cirqus (not too tough, but still hard)
>Monster Bash (getting MoR is tough as nails - also, I did it offline and it didn't fucking save god damnit shit fuck piss)
>Creature (man, FUCK Move Your Car, otherwise, not too tough)
>Theatre (just now did it, not too hard if you concentrate on the Grand Finale)

well I'm sure if I stop zoning out during multiball I'll get that super jackpot, the first time I did move your car I got the 4th shot in and was like less than a second behind.. I didn't know it was started to begin with, second time I got it going had 5 seconds left
>those pop bumpers didn't want to let my ball go
I could see how irritating that could be

and I was concerned because the internet suggests the nudging is more like slamming when you're keyboard only. I see all these flipper tutorials and no tutorials on how to nudge and figured it wasn't possible

well this seems easier to lite the special, I got mummy/drac lit and had werewolf started, went for the scoop and I guess multiple monsters going gets you a multiball mode [2 to 4 ball] (the monster mosh pit)

>> No.1685861

>>1685858

No, shooting the center shot multiple times (six to be exact) lights Mosh Pit Multiball. It's great to have along and stack with Ball and Chain since multiballs stop timers.

I thought I got the cheat to work on TPA. It was both flippers, left 11 times, right once, left 5 times, right once, left 6 times, right once AFAIK.

I got the guy to say totally and the music to change ONCE but I've yet to hear it again.

I can do it manually if I shoot for the swamp man but it hasn't worked even then.

Well, that was a fucking game. Monsters of Rock accounted for like 50% of that score - that mode is ridiculous.

And I'm convinced the challenges are broken - I scored a Special like three times while I was playing, but it never registered that.

Got the controller working on Visual Pinball. Can't use those squishy shoulder buttons anymore but they were killing my shooting accuracy. Mushy response. Can't stage anymore though.
