1603963 No.1603963 [Reply] [Original]

I downloaded the original off VC for Christmas and it certainly is an interesting game. The only other SSB I've played is Melee, which I'm currently completing, and the original feels a lot different. It's not the sort of game I'd play often - compared to Melee it feels more repetitive due to the lack of modes and characters - but it's fun.

Smash Bros thread?

childhood and adolescent defining game. i got this when it was brand new, it was the first game i ever owned for my 64 and i absolutely adored it. never got a gamecube so i never got a chance to move onto melee but i obsessed over the first title so i didn't feel like i was missing out on anything.

fox was my first character i got into and i was pretty impressive with him but once i started moving onto other characters i realized fox was kind of a dull character. my top 3 go:

1. pikachu (hands down da best)
2. jiggly puff
3. ness

>> No.1604549

There's still a 64 competitive community, some people say 64 is more balanced than Melee and Brawl (I'd assume probably due to the small roster, but I guess also because it kind of feels like just the right balance between Brawl's solid but slow/floaty gameplay with Melee's frentic but spastic/glitchy one.
I'm not a tourney though so I don't know the specifics, but yeah.

I got it when it came out and it was lots of fun. It was supposed to be a fun little game and it more than delivered, all night playing 4 players with friends back in 1999 with this game, there was nothing better.

I mained Link, until I unlocked Falcon

>some people say 64 is more balanced than Melee and Brawl
64 is balanced up to a point, after which the only 2 really viable characters are Pikachu and Link. Melee has the advantage that it's simply too fast to play perfectly, leaving a lot of characters viable as tier 1, while in SSB64 you can consistently do first-hit-to-kill stunlocks, leaving very few characters usable in competitive settings.

As for Brawl I can't say though, only play that one for fun. Have heard Dedede is best at one point, have heard Meta-Knight at another.

>> No.1604576

the game is more like brawl, but faster, with no air dodge, no wall teching, instant aerial cancelling and huge amounts of hitstun

there's more technical showy things to do than brawl but it's all easy to do, people don't play it competitively because it's broken as fuck and way too easy to combo

>>1604568
>viable character... Link

wha.........

>> No.1604595

>>1604576
Unless I'm mistaken, aside from Pikachu, Link has the most possible approaches that will lead to a 0%-kill on Dream Land and Hyrule Castle. Great Fox has better approaches for Ness and Fox though.

>> No.1604601

>>1604595

not an expert but thought link was kinda low in the swf tier list

other than boomerang and down air what's good about him?

>> No.1604612

Played the game all the time as a kid, I remember not knowing who Captain Falcon, Ness and Samus were in particular. I was probably awful at it as well, I played with my brothers and they always won in everything

It was all about Luigi though

I went back to it a could years ago and I was surprised that B-moves don't really exist, there's only one of two? It honestly made playing it a bit weird. Some brilliant stages however, it'd be nice if the Wii U version has some retro stages like Mario Kart does, would love a modern Hyrule Castle

>> No.1604615

>>1604601
Fair, Bair and Dair are great approaches, bombs for 3rd recovery and lock-break, and uB can be directioned for off-edge finishers. Ground moves are pretty shit though, and his grab is terrible, so as long as you approach with airs you can do setups easy. He's bad at reactionary plays, so if you're playing with people who can't combo from 0% but need 2 or 3 sets you're better off with someone else.

TL;DR: Link is great when you have a 0% kill practiced, but not so good in back-and-forth games or games with more than 2 players on stock.

>> No.1604621

>>1604601
(continued, forgot a bit)
The thing about Link is that you need to face the right direction when doing airs, which often means that unless you've planned your kill, you'll need to land and turn around and jump again to follow up what you're doing. It's a little bit like Zelda in Brawl from what I've heard.

>> No.1604638

>>1604549

Who says the original Smash is balanced? None of the games are. It's a parody game, not an actual fighting game in the same vein as arcade fighters.

I actually don't understand how a competitive community exists in the first place. It should be obvious the games are imbalanced because several characters, items and stages get banned from tournaments, and players make tier lists to balance out which characters are the only objectively viable options to use in the first place.

>> No.1604653

>>1604638
As long as no starting position is unfair, it can be played competitively in mirrors and tier 1 games.

>> No.1604672

>>1604612
>I went back to it a could years ago and I was surprised that B-moves don't really exist

If you want to abuse B-moves, play Kirby or (after a bit of practice) Fox (or after a LOT of practice, Yoshi).
The whole idea of sucking an opponent into your mouth and spitting him out below the Great Fox while blocking him with the Final Cutter is just sugar-coatedly spectacular.

>> No.1604680

>>1604638
>I actually don't understand how a competitive community exists in the first place.

Because you can compete in it.

>It should be obvious the games are imbalanced

Protip: There are very few traditional fighting games that are balanced. And whether or not a game gets tournament play is not determined by balance.

I don't really use them too often anyway, but changing your play style is surprisingly difficult to do. Link without his weapons was odd is all

Never been interested in tier lists or who's the best either, I play with whoever's fun and nowadays mix it up every match anyway. Probably due to growing up with older brothers who would always win, I was just in it for the fun. I find it odd when people play the same character all the time

>> No.1604708

like playing as fox, he's all around good character with a lot of flexibility and just lacks something stupidly broken

>> No.1604716

>>1604685
Yeah, the problem with Link is that in 64 he has a ton of weapons but none are useful competitively.

The easiest to switch to are probably Fox, Kirby and Ness, and I personally main Ness just because he's easy to switch to.
If you don't play competitively (easy check: does the first hit kill you with a combo y/n) then Link is about the same as DK or Samus (better than DK but worse than Samus). Tourneyfaggotry on the other hand, it's all about the setups and kills. If you play with brothers in a casual setting, play Kirby. Always play Kirby. Unless you want to cheese, in which case you play Falcon with uB or Ness with the Dair lock.

This was the game that taught me that Link's name was Link.

I'd played OOT and A Link To The Past at this point in time. I know, I'm retarded, but I had no friends and my parents would only buy me used games (which meant no box or manual) so I was pretty sheltered from any way I might have found out about it.

I actually haven't gotten around to playing Melee since I never had a Gamecube.

I do own Brawl, though, and I gotta say--I have more fun with Smash 64. If you're playing with people that actually know how to play it's not a very balanced game, but it just *feels* good. The hits seem to really connect and the characters have a sense of weight to them. I think it's pretty perfectly paced.

Am I the only one?
