There are over 29,000 ROMs in a full MAME set. That's far too many to sift through on your own!

Use this thread to recommend cool retro arcade games that can be played in MAME. Please type a short description and explain why the game is fun. Screenshots are also appreciated! Any genre is okay. Well-known or hidden gem, it doesn't matter.

Also feel free to post your MAME setup, especially if you have a cool homemade cabinet.

I'll start.

Ninja Baseball Batman.

It's a 4-player beat-em-up with tons of style and polish. Only one attack button, but the combat still manages to be fun. Lots of wacky levels and enemy designs, and the music is quirky and fun. Everything is baseball themed. It's a good time all around.

It's not exactly an overlooked gem, but Gunwage is one of my personal favorites. It's a bizarre Japanese schmup that's even better in 2p mode (catbabytarantula reactions are priceless).

Also, the legendary DnD games (Tower of Doom & Shadows of Mysteria). SoM is quite possibly the best side-scrolling beat-em-up I've ever played.

In Pachinko, you control the force the balls shoot with, if they shoot at all. It's a gambling game that the object is to win more balls than you buy but in virtual Pachinko you win titties. If you were good, it would cost a lot fewer tokens to see the titties than if you weren't but it's easy to just token feed.

It was how I learned the nuances of real pachinko though, and why I own a real pachinko machine (that and Shenmue 2 and childhood memories of The Price is Right)

Armadillo Racing!

It's nothing that will keep you hooked for hours, but it's a silly racing game (best played with a trackball but I didn't think it was too bad when played with ps3 controller) with 2 courses, each one finishes with a little bowling minigame too.

I once tried to play through every rom in the full romset but gave up around F I think. A large amount don't work, are the roms from pinball/slot machines or are porn mahjong games from my experience.

Mameworld had a database called "MAWS" that was a fantastic resource of games information and a huge customisable ratings list. Metro-Cross - I have no idea how to explain this game but it is really really really fun for how simple it is. Its kind of like pacland I guess (its on the same hardware I think) but set in space and its more about making good time than platforming. Fuck I cant do it justice just try it out its so fun.

>MAME is strictly a non-profit project. Its main purpose is to be a reference to the inner workings of the emulated arcade machines. This is done both for educational purposes and for preservation purposes, in order to prevent many historical games from disappearing forever once the hardware they run on stops working. Of course, in order to preserve the games and demonstrate that the emulated behavior matches the original, you must also be able to actually play the games. This is considered a nice side effect, and is not MAME's primary focus.

Being able to actually play games isn't even part of MAME's mission statement. It's just an added bonus.

>> No.1596589

Of course they have to say that publicly, but they're not fooling anyone.

Besides, it's not like MAME itself puts out the complete ROMsets.

They don't have any kind of accelerated 3D support. 3D games are emulated entirely in software, because the goal is not to make the games playable - it's to exactly document how the hardware functioned (i.e., HLE to some OpenGL renderer is explicitly NOT what MAME wants.)

Emulating 3D arcade games is a pain in the ass. I've used Demul for NAOMI games, and it works okay, but it's pretty janky. There's a really good Sega Model 2 emulator, but it doesn't have many features. Am I missing anything?

1596892

This thread is a good opportunity for me; I'm currently building a mame cabinet... well, more like repairing an old jamma cabinet and fitting a computer inside, so I'm kinda looking for a list of games to put in.

So far, I'm thinking of a lot of shoot'em up (dodonpachi, hotdog storm, UN squadron, raiden, etc...), a fair number of beat'em all (cadillac & dinosaurs, dungeons & dragons, cyberbots or something like this, alien vs predator...), of regular fighting games, some puzzle games (puyo puyo, puzzle bobble, that weird yet hillarious taisen-something game...), a few "sports" games (wind-motherfucking-jammers, soccer brawl...), and some misc. games (bishi bashi...). Maybe if I can mod my old Saturn light gun, I'll include lightgun games, too (Virtua Cop, House of the dead, Time Crisis...).

If you guys have any suggestions of worthy games, please go ahead and I'll give every game a try (if I haven't already). Just no mahjong/pachinko/quizz games, please.

Back when I was toying around with building my own MAME cabinet, I autisticly went through an XML file containing the names/details of every MAME game and cut out every game that required anything beyond a standard joystick and buttons. I could upload it for you, if you want.

That's very nice of you, but it could be done much more easily: using my mame+ version, all the games are already categorized (like "shooter/ flying horizontal", or "platform/ fighter scrolling"). From there, it's easy to both copy a lot of games and leave the one that require more than a joystick and 6 buttons.

I was thinking that perhaps you good /vr/ troopers could show some underrated games.

Out of curiosity, how many hours were needed for you to build that list?
