It's one of my favorites, too.

Some people hate it because there's no Gannon or Zelda and it doesn't take place in Hyrule, etc.
But for me, that's part of the appeal.

I also like when a game makes you consider the consequences your actions will have,
especially on characters you have developed an affection for.
I'm so sorry, Marin ;_;

Sure, it might not be the "masterpiece" that LttP or OoT are,
but for a Gameboy game, it's as good as it gets imho.
(Using a d-pad, 2 buttons and an 8-bit engine they were able to create something so classic, it's really impressive.)

The dungeons are interesting and fun, the items are unique, the plot is original, and the whole atmosphere is just so damned comfy! :)

Highly recommend picking this title up for you guys who haven't played it.

They're pretty bad for their pacing and direction alone. If you're going to play them, seasons first.

Ages starts you off in a pseudo-limited semi open world kind of shit where you can kind of go around and talk to people but if you talk to the wrong people you lose the chance to explore your current area thoroughly for the time being and then you end up in another time/location where everyone spits twenty paragraphs at you about shit you don't care about since you haven't even been to the first dungeon, which it walks you too. It wants to spit the entire story at you in the first thirty minutes of gameplay instead of giving the story. Before you even get your fucking shield they're telling you about the tower, trying to fill you in world history, giving you hints about seed positions, heart positions, shovels to get then a cinematic. The whole layout and direction is a fucking mess from the get go. It feels less like exploring a new world and having someone try to cram every part of a world in your face to get you up to speed like a hyperactive teenager who wants your opinion on the end of the book. In the end despite playing like a Zelda game, it doesn't really feel like a Zelda game.

It's easy for people who have already played previous Zelda games. Or generally have experience in the whole action dungeon-crawling game with puzzles and what not.
I'd say the average person wouldn't be able to beat this game without some help. Eagle Tower is considered one of the hardest dungeons in Zelda games, I think.

I thought the newer Zelda games I've played are easier than any other Zelda from the past (those are, Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, I have playerd ST but still haven't finished it), but I think it's mostly due to the fact I have good training in Zelda. LA was my first game and it slammed my ass as a kid. My original file has 088 death counts.

Seasons is great. Not quite LA tier - the rings are superfluous, and the story is, ultimately, back to the conventional Zelda standard, so the game ends up less focussed and pulling you in much less -, but the NPCs are great. A huge bonus is that the bosses are significantly more difficult than they were in LA (The same also applies to OoA) - if there's a weak point to LA, it's the sheer patheticness of its bosses, and both Oracles did a lot for fixing this issue (Ages more so than Seasons since Ages basically turns the bosses into puzzles, while Seasons is more about button mashing and dodging).

Ages... I thought tried too hard with all the drama that's forced down your throat straight from the beginning of the game, which just ends up making you not care (Compare to LA, where the drama only begins once you're already heavily empathising with the NPCs), and the time travel mechanic ends up limiting you, as >>1588431 already pointed out. I also found the NPCs to be rather annoying. This being said, the dungeons offer a fair bit of at times frustrating difficulty, and the bosses are, as noted before, fairly inventive and fun.

Personally, I maintain that LA > OoS > OoA, but with this being said, LA with OoA style bosses would be the best thing ever to happen to the Zelda franchise and handheld gaming.

They're either in chests or in locations strongly suggesting that something may be hidden there - under a rock or a couple bushes in a corner or forming a cross formation, that sort of thing. There's no reason whatsoever to dig through the entire island. They're not simply 'Somewhere'.

Plus, a lot can be found with Bow Wow.

I did dig through the entire island on my first playthrough at age 13, but it wasn't necessary

I just keep ignoring the picture quest.

Also, it's worth noting that the game is actually very good with money management. If you choose not to grind, just go from dungeon to dungeon and get all the chests, you'll hit 980 rupees after Catfish's Maw - exactly when you need (Well, sort of, technically, you can do without...) the bow to deal with Face Shrine. And Face Shrine then throws enough rupees at you to get Wart's song. Eagle Tower & Turtle Rock rupees can then be used for the rapids, if you want.

'course, not getting the bow means that the lvl 2 miniboss may stomp you if you're unlucky.

>> No.1589260

>>1588163
Essentially what >>1588472 said. Sure, I can pretty much play LA in my sleep now, a perfect playthrough is standard - but when I first played it, I racked up fifty or so deaths.

I'd say Blind's Dungeon and the Ice Dungeon in LttP were in the same difficulty-tier as Eagle's Tower (I cannot comment on LA's Turtle Rock - I never completed it as the devs intended. Always used bomb arrows for short cuts), but it's safe to say that OoT's dungeons are easier than LAs.

LA's BOSSES are pathetic as fuck, easier than in any other Zelda game I've played. But the dungeons themselves are okay.

I recommend catching a stream of someone playing the game for the first time - it really brings the game's difficulty into perspective. There's a HUGE difference between playing it for the first time and going for one's fifth playthrough, considerably more so than usual.

One of my favorite games. I play through it at least once a year.

Most people know about the screen warp glitch in the original, but did you know the DX version had it's share of glitches, too?

Here's one that fucks everything up (doghouse glitch):

Here's one that allows you to change our tunic color without the secret dungeon:

Your tunic changes color, and it includes the power that goes with it, like double attack. You can even get it to have a constant damaged sprite (dark red) or a dark blue sprite.

This game never fails to set me on a feels trip. Not only because of the stuff about Marin and everything which would be enough on it's own, also because of dreams and shit.

I'm really interested in Philosophy, existentialism and all that stuff. The ending scene where the world just fades away, no one will ever know what went on there except Link.

Anyone else notice that Link's Awakening is a lot like Majora's Mask?

They're both set in a parallel world that may have never actually existed, and have a darker tone than the game they're a sequel to. They both have a villain who is more of an arcane "force" than an actual personality, and finally, the apocalypse is a major theme of both games. Except in Majora's Mask you're preventing the apocalypse, and in Link's Awakening, you cause it.

Thanks, those were good reads.

By the way what do you guys think about the japanese title of the game? Yume wo miru shima (something like "the dream island" I think).
I think Link's Awakening is a more sensible and mysterious title, japanese title is too direct and to the point, which isn't bad per se, but it's just a kidn of generic title.
Same thing with A Link to the Past, which is also a wordplay, the japanese title of ALTTP is "the godesses of the triforce" or something.

I especially love Link's Awakening. When I was a kid I associated it when the beginning of the game, when Link awakes at Marin's house, I didn't know how the game would evolve after that.. it was great when I got to the ending.

>> No.1600412

I don't know why this author talks about Link's Awakening like no one has ever heard of it. All of my friends as kids had played it and we all loved it. I was not the only one who owned it in my neighbourhood. And finally, with around 7 mil in sales for both original and DX, that's a huge number back in the 90s for a handheld game. Sure, it's no Tetris, but give me a break.

I don't think LA is such an obscure title as this author makes it out to be. Hell, it's on a surprising amount of favourite Zelda lists as the number one best Zelda. I would be inclined to agree... if it's successors Seasons/Ages didn't usurp that title. But it will always be one of the best Zeldas and one of the best handheld games ever made. And I think a lot of people feel the same way.

>200+ replies of Link's Awakening love

This made my day. Normally I hate talking about Zelda with people because they're like "LOL LINK TO THE PAST OCARINA OF TIME TWILIGHT PRINCESS HUE HUE", and I say that my favorite Zelda of all time is Link's Awakening, and they get more or less say "What the fuck is a Link's Awakening?".

Also, how did this game make me feel more emotions than any of the other Zelda games?

If you REALLY like 2D Zelda, you owe it to yourself to play both of them linked both ways. I started with seasons, and I think that it's a better place to start personally. Do seasons -> ages, get all the secrets, then after a year or so, go back and do ages -> seasons. The secrets and some small side quests and stuff like that are different depending on which you do first.

Also, the secret dungeon is different in each game, and you can only get to it in a linked game, so to get all the content, you should really do it both ways.

miru means to see, so yume wo miru translates in English best to the verb "To dream". Because of the placement of "Yume wo miru", this is descriptive of the island. So the title "Yume wo miru shima" hes the literal meaning of "The island where dreams are viewed".

But there isn't any indication of who views dreams, it's even possible grammatically that the island itself is the one dreaming. It's vague and mysterious in so many ways. I would even argue that it is more mysterious than the title link's awakening. The English title also eliminates any reference to the fact that it might be someone else's dream rather than Link, and that he too might disappear when the dream ends.

Also I tend to dislike the titles that include "Link" in them, because the player is allowed to change their name. It's a small gripe, but I feel it takes away a bit from the immersion. Link to the past is honestly the worst I think. I know I'm going to get a lot of hate for saying this, but titles for this kind of game (or really movie or book as well) shouldn't have jokes in them. It's inconsistent with the tone. I know Zelda is kind of goofy and not that serous, but it's meant to be at least a little bit epic. If we were talking about a Wario game I would feel differently. Basically ALttP is like if avengers was called "the Avengers: a THORny encounter!"

On top of the dumb wordplay, ALttP isn't even about time travel. There is no "Link to the past". You're traveling between the light world and the dark world, but they're two different timelines, not different points in time. The title does nothing to tell you what the game is about, where "kamigami no toraifosu" definitely does.

Well, its size is the puzzle - it'll take some effort to not get lost. But yeah, overall, it's easier, though that's partly because I don't know anyone who's ever completed it as the developer intended - everyone always uses bomb arrows across the lava to open up an extra path, which simplifies things.

It's a weird feeling. Closure, man. I always knew how it would end, but I didn't want it to. That's the biggest thing about this game for me, they straight-up tell you how it ends. You have so much fun, get immersed into the environment, knowing that it will end the way it does.

It left a bittersweet taste. I hate endings.

Plus, even if Link knows the island is fake, it's still a matter of principle. If he stole from the shop, he'd basically be admitting to himself that he's capable of stealing, even if he isn't culpable of that particular instance of theft.

That's completely psychologically valid. Studies show that most virtuous people will hesitate to commit an immoral act even in a simulated setting (this is veering dangerously into Jack Thompson territory so I'll stop).

Man, I remember when I got LA for the first time, I remember going into the library and looking at that map, and knowing I would never be able to see the entire thing (mostly because the cart wouldn't save) through the game, so I'd just move the cursor left and right and view as much as I could and play as far as I could until I would turn it off.

It was a huge game to me back then, but now it seems so small.

I would have never guess I'd see the entire thing on a map like this in the end.

Looking back, I have absolutely no idea how I got damn near everything in this game apart from several hearts.

I was about 7 or so when I played it, didn't complete it until I was 16 due to not understanding that losing "half" my magic was a good thing and not a bad thing, leading me to never finish the second to last dungeon since I couldn't time the flames right to open the door without losing all my mana.

ALttP was basically my entire world when I was a kid. My mom rented it for me on the weekends if I got all my home work done and didn't fuck around and get in trouble or smart off. I had no idea how save files worked (or what a save file even was), so I just kept pressing Start when the game booted up. It loaded me into someone else's game (presumably some other kid!), and the first thing I did was just . . . wander around in awe. I made my way to the cave where you get the Ice Rod. Apparently the person whose file I was using had already gotten it, so the chest was empty. To this day I still remember how that opened chest looked like a TV set. I don't think I'll ever forget it.

Can confirm mashing buttons at death to save w/o it recording said death gave me the "perfect ending" cinematic after beating the game. However, mashing doesnt work for avoiding the shopkeeper's revenge death

I do Japanese to English translation for a living. His mistake is more complex than you might imagine, and it's actually not hard to see how he came to his conclusion. He's on the right track overall, but in this case there is an exception.

His argument is that "yume wo miru" is a relative clause. In this sense, his translation is actually apt. Look at it in a different sentence: "鳥を見る公園" (tori wo miru kouen) would be "bird-viewing park" in the most literal sense or "a park where one sees birds". Let's try another sentence with a different verb: "いつも掃除する女" (itsumo souji suru onna) would be "always-cleaning woman" or "woman who is always cleaning". In English words can and usually should be added because Japanese can and often does omit parts of a sentence that most people would need for context in English, such as the "who" and "where" that appeared in the last two examples. In the sense of a relative clause, his translation makes sense.

But there's a problem. "yume wo miru" is an expression; a verb in itself. The whole thing is considered the verb, not just the "miru" part. As such, the "yume wo miru shima" would become "dream island".

It's a mistake that I've seen happen numerous times before. Give the guy a break.

can't believe my post caused so many language controversy.
Anyway, I just said "dream island" because that's what wikipedia said, I know very little japanese. Anyway Dream Island or Dreaming Island, it gives basically the same idea: that you're dreaming in an island (or that you're inside the island's dream, depending how you interpret it). My point was that the english title seems a little more ingenious and ambiguous and it works better for me, as I said, as a kid I related Link's Awakening with Link awakening at Marin's house after the ship accident, then I slowly started noticing it was about something else.
Anyway the japanese title isn't bad either, just less mysterious.

By the way, you say its correct translation is "the island where dreams are viewed"? I think that sort of is the correct literal translation, but I think "yume wo miru" is the japanese term to say "to dream" or "to be dreaming" (they use "miru" because after all you're "seeing" the dream when you're dreaming, but it's not necessary to translate the verb into english because we don't say "I'm seeing a dream"...), I don't think "are viewed" is necessary, if I'm not mistaken. So I think maybe "The dream island" or "The dreaming island" is closer to a proper translation... what do you say? I don't do japanese translations for a living so I guess you're more experienced, but I was almost sure "yume wo miru" simply meant "to dream".

wat
Crazy Tacy's potion is close to necessary - if only for the final boss -, but the sword or tunic are completely optional for a perfect run.

No. LttP counts every time you power down the game as a 'Try', which the game doesn't distinguish from a death, but LA only counts deaths.

Not if you have the Boomerang.

I tried it the first time I faced Dethl but didn't time it quite right and wound up relying on arrows. I didn't find out about the Boomerang's insta-kill power until years later. It was probably for the best - finishing the final boss like that the first time wouldn't have been satisfying at all.

You could always pay for the stuff and save while it counts down the money, it keeps you 90% of it and the shop keeper won't die and you won't be called Thief (unless you named yourself so)

That reminds me of something.

There was an RPG on the SNES where you could take all you wanted from the shop even if you didn't have enough money and then had to pay for it at the end.
What's its name ?

It was great.
I seriously just finished waking up the Wind Fish ~3 minutes ago.

I fucked up, though.
I forgot to save after getting the 8th instrument and before going to the Egg, so now I'm eternally at the beginning of Turtle Rock.
I know it's gonna drive me nuts; I'm gonna have to beat it again.
I can't stand the idea of my save file permanently being ONE heart container shy lol..
Not only that, but the Fire Rod is fucking bad ass.

It's a great game, I will probably replay it some time in the future
and I'll definitely recommend it to anyone.

I think next I'm going to FINALLY play Link to the Past.

Went back and got the final heart container and pwned that silly gob of fire boss again.
Also switched out the Blue Tunic for the Red one, because why the hell not?

Now time to just explore the island a little, take in the sights, talk to the quirky characters...
Take it easy.
Is it me, or is Koholint Island one of the most comfy worlds in any game??

Hence close to necessary. You can beat him without - even with arrows - if you jump well enough, but many players are lazy and just stand around, waiting for the eye to open, in which case the potion is necessary.

I feel the same way. I always pay full price for the bow. I hate finding a chest with rupees in it when I'm already capped, which will happen a LOT if you cheese the bow and keep 850+ of the rupees it's supposed to cost.

Zelda 1 has mostly easy bosses.

Zelda 2 has some pretty hard bosses, mainly Gooma and Thunderbird. And of course, Dark Link.
