What do you think is better?
a gameboy pocket with a backlight installed or a gameboy light?

I have been thinking of buying a pocket for the nice quality screen without loosing the old look/feel of the black and white screen also I love the styling.

But I also love the uniqueness of the light, I also like its bigger size and it's already got a backlight in it.

Does anyone have any suggestions or opinions?

Anyone have experience with GB Boy Colour?

>> No.1586632

>>1586558
Yes. I bought 2 thinking it was a good move, when there was a /vr/ thread about chinese clones on Ali Express.

It's absolutely awful. Terrible pixel scaling, fake IR port, half working GB link, shitty pad, incomplete sound emulation. Complete garbage. AVOID. Get old real GB and mod/restore. I'm doing that now, barely more expensive and way better.

whoever say these GB boy pieces of shit are good is either paid by them, has no clue about sound/image quality, or is so guilty with such a stupid purchase that their only way to lice with it is to convince themselves and others it's an interesting clone to own.

I sacrificied myself for you anon, now go grab a cheap GB and restore/mod it.

>> No.1587664

The Pocket's thin form is my favorite out of all the GB models, but I wish it ran on something stronger than a couple AAAs because it's too weak to power flashcarts like Everdrive.

>>1586632
This guy gets it. Glad to see I'm not the only one who sees through the GB Boy garbage.

If you really want the same screen 'quality' (i.e. very bright with extremely saturated colors that shit all over GBC games) then just get an AGS-101. They aren't even rare or expensive. I just bought a used one for my girlfriend for around $50 on Amazon.

Otherwise the best GBC solution is and probably will always be a real GBC with modded frontlight.

Well, your post just prompted me to do some quick research on the subject and apparently Everdrive does and doesn't work depending on the quality/charge level of its batteries.

In my case, my Pocket is running on cheap, half-used, dollar-store AAAs so it flickers and sometimes crashes on the main menu. If I can actually get a game to load it'll run perfectly in-game, but usually only with small games since the long rewrite time for larger games is way too much of a power draw on the poor little batteries. I've read that having a backlight mod makes it worse since obviously that's even more battery strain.

However, someone with an AC adapter reported that it works great when it's plugged in for obvious reasons. I guess the bottom line is that if you wanna use the ED on a Pocket you've gotta get 'premium' high-quality batteries or plug it in.

The ED cart draws a lot of current during r/w operations. You need batteries that can sustain the spikes of high load without having their voltage drop into the shitter.

Cheap alkaline AAAs won't cut it and zinc chloride "heavy duty" batteries are even worse. Energizer Titanium batteries can sustain rather high current for alkalines but I'm not sure if it's enough. Duracell Quantum are interesting in that they have a completely flat discharge curve and high capacity, but only at low current. They will tank and perform worse than standard Duracells if you put them under high load.

NiMH batteries on the other hand can deliver far more current than alkalines. You can get an amp out of any decent AAA, and you can just charge them back up after you've run them down. Pic related are what I use in my front lit CGB with an EDGB.

Lithium metal batteries can also supply lots of current, but their voltage is over spec for the GB (1.7V) and they're expensive.

The color frontlight mod is not very nice IMO. It washes out the image underneath and makes the viewing angle very restricted. If you are unlucky like I was with one of the two I did, it will eventually cloud over and you will not be able to see anything on the screen.

The color front light seems cool at first but if you actually want to use the thing at length afterward, it's not worth it. It only stays good long enough to make a video or post about how great it is.

semi related, but I thought I'd just post both of these anyway.

pic right is my clear DMG with a pink backlit screen, also on the top corner you can see the low battery led mod I put in. it does exactly what it sounds like. lights up a red led when my batteries are low.

pic left is my normal gba in comparison to my gba that I put an gbasp ags 101 screen in. it drains more battery, however it looks incredible. I don't really like the sp clamshell body either, but I love the gba body, but hate the dim ass screen. so I'm in love with this guy. also used a pink translucent top shell, and an indigo translucent bottom shell, nice two-tone feel goin on.

I know it's not retro, but I would just get a GBA SP. You're going to pay around the same amount, if not more, for a classic GB in great shape. The thing is, these older screens really weren't that great. You're going to see a lot of ghosting when sprites are moving around the screen, and the screens themselves may not last much longer, or may start to develop dead pixels.

If you really need the retro feel of classic GB hardware, I guess you could get a backlight mod and a replacement screen somewhere, but I'm betting any of the replacement screens available online are from shoddy Chinese manufacturers. Their quality is suspect at best. This is why I don't bother to service my consoles very much in the first place. Any of the replacement parts I can find online tend to be of inferior quality compared to the original, so they'll start to go out within just a few months of use, if not earlier.

They should perform fine.

The XX Eneloops have higher capacity at the expense of self-discharge rate and recharge cycles endured. I'm not sure why Sanyo renamed them for the western market, but they're called Eneloop Pro in Japan.

The rate of discharge isn't much worse than regular eneloops (and honestly how likely is it that you're going to store one of these for 5 years?), but the cycle longevity does take a big hit.

Assuming 2013 Sanyo branded Eneloops based on the ones >>1590556 has:
Standard Eneloop AAA = min 750mAh, discharge to 70% over 5 years in storage, 1800 recharge cycles.
Pro/XX Eneloop AAA = min 900mAh, discharge to 70% over 3 years in storage, 500 recharge cycles.

As of last year the Eneloop technology was bought out and rebranded by Panasonic, and the XX tech is now called "Pro" worldwide.

I tried to install a backlight in a Pocket about a year ago. The backing on the screen didn't come off very easily, so I had to spend ages getting it off. I got the backlight installed and got everything soldered up, turned it on, and like 40% of the screen was fucked up. I tried fixing it, but then the ENTIRE screen became useless.

I don't even know. I barely even touched the ribbon cable connecting the screen to the motherboard. I've done plenty of mods on other consoles and never had any issues so I'd like to think I'm decent enough at this kinda shit to not fuck something like this up, but damn. I really want to try again since having a backlit Pocket would be so convenient, but I don't feel like spending money on another Pocket + backlight just to fuck it up again.
