You want to get good, then you should start creating mods; period. You don't even NEED to create the most perfect code or sprites to get everyone's eyes on your work (and honest to good, Brutal Doom and other mods are proof of this), and in the meantime stuff such as the original Rootpain, Swan Fox and Classic Rivalry is automatically better than any ~*~fancy~*~ mod idea you may have for the sole reason that they actually EXIST.

Every BD version gets around 200.000 downloads made by Moddb's mirrors. If you could gather every active user of Doomworld, Zandronum, and Zdoom forums, you wouldn't get 1% of that, so, yeah, it brings a lot of people from outside the community. So yeah, I guess you can say Moddb has a lot of Doom players.

Take a look at ZBloodpack, it's a shitty 15 minute megawad filled with unmodified Realm667 stuff, and it got 5000 downloads across the years. My old projects that were only posted on the forums never got more than 1500 downloads. Keep your mod update with good news and images, and you can go pretty far.

Is there really that much of a difference between the "variants" of Doom? (e.g. prboom, zdoom, gzdoom, etc.)

I'm not too terribly interested in playing Multiplayer (I can't with my shitty connection)

Well, GZDoom has mods that just improve things like the weapon animations or the sounds, and some that add some nice graphical flair (that isn't really resource intensive btw), and that Doom Metal one that replaces the music with remixes and shit, it's pretty neat. Since it's OpenGL it comes with additional wads to add brightmaps and shit, and comes with true dynamic light support, and obviously it makes freelook not make you want to vomit.
PrBoom+ handles loadsaenemies better I think, and that's it pretty much iirc. It also comes with an OpenGL version I think.

1 - Doom because it's fucking Doom, and just perfection.
2 - Marathon because it has that atmospheric vibe that I really like. Bit silly aesthetics here and there, but overall it just good. One of the first game that truly felt like an epic journey for me.

Duke and Quake are pretty cool. Quake had kinda meh-levels, and the SP-gameplay didn't survive the test of time.

SW is pretty cool but inferior to Duke to really meh later-game level design.

custom map with fixed camera would be the simpler way to do it.

Just make sure you disable any mouse control for that map only and make sure doomguy spawns in the correct angle for correct directional movement.

Add teleports that lead to other maps and you're done.
