I actually think the hardest part of Mario 64 is getting 100 coins in Hazy Maze Cave. I don't know, I just really struggle with it. I beat Mario 64 for the first time in 2008, on pc, with the keyboard, and I thought it was quite easy. Last year I finally bought a 3DS, bought a used Mario DS, and I had a harder time than in 2008 emulating it on the pc.

A problem I have with the DS version is that it's too damn small. You don't get the same sense of immersion that you do playing on a big TV screen. Mario 64 wasn't made for a tiny handheld.

I think this image I just made sums up the difference pretty well.
64DS has better models and animations, much better effects made of 2D images like fire, textures are pixel-y rather than blurry, and textures tend to have much less contrast (probably because of the 64DS's low resolution, lack of blurring for textures, etc. which would make textures with high contrast 'shimmer' when somewhat far away) and as a result lighting probably had to be toned down to provide less contrast as well, so some stuff looks out of place.
I think it's what you'd call a mixed bag.
There are other changes, but they're more of a case by case thing. Dorrie is probably the best example of 64DS ruining the art-style.

Actually, yes, you can improve fully 3D games by just upscaling the resolution. The 2D is what doesn't upscale at all.

If the game is completely real-time 3D, upscaling it (without going overboard, of course) does in fact improve the visuals in most cases.

The DS has arguably clearer textures, but they look good in the distance such as the doors or wall decorations. Floor and close-uo textures look awfully pixelated. What the fuck, why do they have to use anti-aliasing for such simple, low color graphics? The 3D coins don't look good, but I'm also not a fan of the 2D ones, even if they look better.

This is
because the DS
has no
texture filtering.

When a
DS emulator
gets texture filtering
it will
look better.

I thought it was alright, but I hope you like holding down Y to run. Most of the new stars are distributed to existing stages, but they are usually either switch stars or a five silver stars hunt.

I do kind of miss how Mario could collect all the caps, as Luigi and Wario have them. At least you can use literally almost any power up anywhere provided there's a box and nearby caps, that and Luigi's broken as shit jumping abilities allow you to do all these crazy things you can't normally do in SM64, so it's easily more funner to dick around in. There's also an extra Dobson-like power up in Balloon Mario

The mini-games are fun as fuck at least. But you have to catch all the rabbits to get them all.

I also prefer the original Bowser model rather than the one used on DS. It's probably not better, Bowser on the DS actually looks more like Bowser's classic design (although the modern version), but I like how iconic and characteristic the original 64 version is. I think he's creepier, too.

I think the main difference between n64 and ds is that the devs were absolutely fascinated and proud of the 3d environment in n64. Colors popped and enemies were large and bold to really emphasize their unique place within the overall structure. The DS mostly tones it down, simply because it's no longer new. A simple 3D platformer like sm64 isn't something to take much pride in today, even looking at it from the company's (as a whole) perspective

Huh? I don't remember that being a problem at all.
Here's where I remember it being problematic:

-Collecting red coins on tall tall mountain, that little maze next to the gophers. Pretty awkward angles.
-Some parts of Tick Tock Clock are bad because they require really precise jumps and some of the objects get in the way. In particular, to get 100 coins you pretty much have to stop time, which means you have to do a really precise wall jump to a higher platform.
-Maybe I'm wrong but jumping on the roof of Big Boo could be better, I dont remember if the R camera works in that instance. If it does it doesn't matter.
But even then this feels kind of negligible. Nothing is nearly as bad as that part in Mario Sunshine where you're behind the ferris wheel. I mean are there any parts in Mario 64 Im missing?

To be honest, I found the camera in Banjo Kazooie a lot worse. It doesn't seem to follow Banjo quite as well. I always found myself having to adjust the angle, far more than Mario 64.

>> No.1591410

>>1591323
Replaying it recently the camera was a lot worse than I remember, at times it just wouldn't swing round to face the opposite direction for no reason. After a while I figured out its pretty free flowing and centres directly behind Mario. It swinging to do this while you're moving for precise jumps puts your own direction off causing you to fall.

I ended up using the close up camera for a lot of tighter situations, which is good so long as you don't want to turn.

GDI mission 8, in Slovakia. You can't see it from the picture, but to the southwest of the base, across the small bridge, is a civilian village, as well a hospital and Dr. Mobius, all of which need to be protected. If Dr. Mobius dies, or a certain number of civilians die or have their buildings destroyed, you fail. This is annoying enough with Nod constantly sending groups of light tanks and flamethrowers in helicopter transports to try and torch the village, but the real pisser is that there's a patch of Tiberium in the middle of the village, complete with a Blossom Tree so you cannot remove it permanently. What this means is that, because of the civilian AI, which will occasionally move a few spaces here and there in a random direction, you are always bound to lose because the civilians will constantly wander into the Tib field and die. You basically have to have godly micro and constantly have your units force fire on the Tiberium to keep it from spreading, while also defending the civilians, while also protecting your base, while also trying to destroy Nod's base.

The only relief is that this mission is option, as you can also select a different mission in place of this one (I believe the alternative has you repairing some damaged GDI base with no ConYard, and then destroying a Nod base, a much simpler objective).
