It's fucking hilarious, I wish I could stuff an audio track into a webm. Watching that shit makes me crack up every time, the music is full of musical jokes...though the bassoons have the best lines.

I would like to see him play... E.V.O. The Search For Eden. There is a good 2-parter right there. He'll be somewhere within the dinosaur era or maybe even reach the ice age by the end of the first episode then struggle in the ice age and 50,000 bc in the next episode, especially with the final boss which I bet will horribly kick his ass, spending at least an hour farming points to cheese the boss with constant evolving back and forth for heals

Did anyone not like the Rocky Rodent episode? There was nothing wrong with Arino or the episode itself, a lot of the jokes were great. But the game...is terrible. Almost every aspect of the platforming was stolen from Sonic, and the changing abilities and Pecky are obvious copies of Mega Man. I was just sitting there picking the game apart the whole time.

Game Center CX reminds me of the Howard Stern Show in that Arino, like Stern, makes on-air personalities out of the various show staff. Kan is the reverse of Baba Booey: instead of being the victim of ridicule when entering the room like Baba Booey, Arino cowers whenever Kan makes an appearance and takes his words to heart. Abe reminds me of Fred: both will chime in on the rare occasion with a bit of wisdom and both have a don't-fuck-with-them vibe. Nakayama is like JD: a socially awkward assistant producer who gets messed with by the host over his love life (or lack thereof). Tani is literally the Japanese Scott the Engineer: an overweight audio engineer that smokes, is obsessed with bowling and is often the brunt of the joke by the host over how pathetic he is.

Like, with Blaster Master, Arino made it up to the Area 7 boss before he ran out of time. I guess that they figured it would be a waste of a shooting day (and not enough usable footage for a second episode) to extend the challenge a second day to clear the seventh boss and the final area.

I think with Ghouls n Ghosts they wanted him to beat it because he failed his Ghosts n Goblins challenge and they could work with this story of him getting revenge against the series. They also probably knew they were going to eventually have him play Super Ghouls n Ghosts. That way, they could do a narrative of "Arino is 1-1 with the Ghosts n Goblins series. Can he settle things once and for all with the final game in the trilogy?"

Arino used to appear on "Mecha-Ike", another Fuji-TV CS show a lot (if he still does I never catch it). I imagine they heavily cross-promoted his appearances on that show with GCCX and had another Mecha-Ike regular appear to draw in new viewers.

Localizing it as "Retro Game Challenge" was a fairly decent idea, since it pretty much sums up what it's about. Westerners don't have a clue what the CX stands for, and it's only a reference to the TV station anyway, so that can be omitted, and the focal point of the series isn't the arcade trips, it's Arino's challenge.

However, if you're purely talking about conveying the image of a game center, then yes, using the term arcade would probably be your best bet.

There is a secret cult of men who serve the Chief, making available to encoders and viewers these TRUE raw video files. No one in their right mind would ever turn something from an encoder into an MPEG-2 or h.264 .TS Encoders turn these into video files with which people are more familiar. I don't know what else to say. GCCX is shot on video, not film, I've seen confusion about that too. Wikipedia has more answers.

My guess is because it's a sports game they haven't done it yet. I don't believe that the SA-GCCX subbers are big sports fans, so it's not really high on their to-do list. Also, the quality of the video I've found online is kinda meh (but it's on youku, so it could just be an encoding thing from when it got uploaded to the site). If that's the case, it could be like GeGeGe no Kitaro, where they wanted to hold off until they could find a decent rip of the episode (before they eventually gave up and just did it).

Takahashi's a guy who is great at games, so much so that even Urakawa bows to his gaming prowess. He just becomes a fanboy when discussion turns to AKB48, which is how a lot of people act apparently (see /jp/ for further evidence of this). The cardigan thing was just probably that he showed up once or twice in it, someone made a joke about it, so they kept it going as a running joke.

Arino's basically an insult comic. The staff just laughs it off because they're not going to take what an insult comic says seriously (why would Watanabe come back after being called Black Kirby, Majin Buu and whatever else Arino threw at her if she was seriously upset by it). They also give him as much help as it takes to make what is happening still entertaining to watch.
