What are the best retro pro wrestling games?

I am looking for ones that are more simulation-ish, than arcadey, but I am open to suggestions. I just want to play some wrestling games.

>> No.1565597

I don't know if this is more of a simulation or more of an arcade game because I don't know how to apply that to wrestling games, but I still enjoy WWF Royal Rumble for the SNES once in a while.

>> No.1565607

The answer will always overwhelmingly be WWF No Mercy because it has the best engine and the best moveset options in Create-a-Wrestler.

Fire Pro series is alright too.

THQ Wrestling games on the N64 and PS1, Wrestlemania the Arcade Game, Fire Pro Wrestling

I had a whole post but my phone at it, I'm pissed.

Get No Mercy. Sometimes it slows down with 4 wrestlers on screen. If that bothers you, get WM2K or Revenge too.

>> No.1565864

Emulation or not? THAT is the question.

The Retronauts guys did an episode on retro wrestling games a while back.

No, VPW2 is overrated by weeaboos. Pro wrestling weeaboos.

For one thing, it's in Japanese unless you're using textures to change it to English--in which case, you are emulating, go play NM, it has an insane community for that shit.

You have the shoot fight mode which you only give a shit about if you want some wrestlers to punch people more. You have the mask editor which I will admit is pretty cool.

But on the other hand, the roster is bleeding out fucktons of wrestlers you both have never heard of and the majority of which have their appearances mixed up since Aki didn't have their licenses. (They only had license for the AJPW guys like Misawa and Kobashi.) Plus it looks worse, doesnt have the new moves from NM, and doesn't have a single appearance option from any god damn Western promotion.

I mean, when I play wrestling, I want the Undertaker. Hulk Hogan. Kane. Sting. Scott Hall. Kevin Nash. Triple H. Stone Cold. Raven. Wrestlers I know and care about. Not the handful of Japanese guys I give a fuck about and 40 others.

>I'm a huge dick. Let me prove it to you.

Yeah, fuck off. VPW2 is great. You've got No Mercy for all that stuff, so why you've got a bug up your ass because some people prefer Japanese wrestling I can't imagine. Nevermind that VPW2 has a shoot fighting system, MMA point/round based ruleset and the ability to make masked wrestlers just to mention a few. Totally different games.

WWF No Mercy is probably the best wrestling game ever created. It has great gameplay and its story mode is brilliant. First, you choose a belt that you want to go after. Then, depending on which matches you win or lose, determines what happens next. All of this is kept track by a giant grid, which looks like something from an role-playing game.

What makes the game fun is trying to complete all the scenarios and get 100% for each one. The game also rewards you with money as you progress, which can be spent on new moves, clothing, weapons, wrestlers, etc.

I've played a lot of wrestling games, and WWF No Mercy is by far the best. It is the only wrestling game for the N64 or PSone that has aged well, thanks to its addictive single-player mode that takes weeks to unlock everything.

Its a Japanese game so what do you expect? If it was a Japanese game in Spanish it would seem rather odd.

>You have the shoot fight mode which you only give a shit about if you want some wrestlers to punch people more. You have the mask editor which I will admit is pretty cool.
Different modes, it all adds to the variety, having different styles of grappler helps mix things up as it does get tiresome having a roster of 30 wrestlers that you can apply the same strategy to.
Customising options are better than No Mercy, even a rather basic AI editor. The AI in No Mercy is rubbish and makes for matches where you can do the same stuff to win against anyone, even on very hard.

>But on the other hand, the roster is bleeding out fucktons of wrestlers you both have never heard of and the majority of which have their appearances mixed up since Aki didn't have their licenses. Fire Pro wrestling is like this so lets all hate it for not being official,

>I mean, when I play wrestling, I want the Undertaker. Hulk Hogan. Kane. Sting. Scott Hall. Kevin Nash. Triple H. Stone Cold. Raven. Wrestlers I know and care about. Not the handful of Japanese guys I give a fuck about and 40 others.
>Not rocking with the mid cards.
Also it does have a character creation mode.

the only main thing NM has over it is the one player mode, VPW2 has a cack one player mode and weapon use is rubbish

Unlike popular opinion I think that WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW is just as good as SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain if not just slightly better although it might just be nostalgia talking.

Saturday Night Slam Masters/Muscle Bomber was the only wrestler I ever liked.
Really recommend if you're into Final Fight and classic Capcom.

There were a bunch of dudes in that game that were well known in America, like Stan Hansen, Vader, and Mike Awesome(Mike Awful in the game). I loved being able to play as Hayabusa ane Akira Taue.

The shoot system was a cool dynamic for some of the guys, being able to pull a Karelin lift out of nowhere was awesome to me.

I was real big into wrestling and Pride/K-1 shit a long time ago so when my buddy found this game it was heaven. He edited all the wrestlers names to be correct in English. There were 7 of us that would just play the game non stop, run tags and triple threats to hour long draws cause we all got so good at it. I'll never forget one time when I got a pinfall at 59:56, everyone in the room lost it.

I'll agree one player mode is lame though

I can only assume he complained because the suggestion was made that VPW2 was a full-on replacement, rather than another good option, which is more of what your post here seems to be saying. The original post he replied to suggested that only VPW2 was necessary, when it seems more like both games are worth getting.

It's weird to me. Didn't VPW64 have all the people from WCW vs. NWO World Tour, plus another 30-something? That to me sounds like a worthwhile package.
