what are some games that are dark and/or surreal that deal with fairly mature themes?

(basically, what are some games that are the equivalent of arthouse cinema?)

Dreamweb is one of my all time favorites, just play it with a guide in hand for those console parts and puzzles you need the physical manual to complete.

Despite the painfully dated grfx, the voice acting, music, and atmosphere are amazing.

In the game, you never really know if you're really saving the Dreamweb metaworld, or if you have lost your marbles and are just running around killing at random over voices in your head. Expect a short and bittersweet run.

It definitely gets a bit tougher if you limit it to /vr/ relevant stuff.

The first one that came to mind for me was Cosmology of Kyoto.

Despite being a VN, Divi Dead is actually a thriller, not a sex romp. The few sex scenes in the game are there to disturb and horrify you instead of titillate.

Nice thread. It's a shame I have no suggestions to share.

>> No.1560134

>>1560076
part of the idea of the thread is that limit. we can easily find things that satisfy these criteria in the new millennium. the difficulty comes in finding older things that also satisfy them.

The late Bill Williams made a lot of weird games, he's once been called the Stanley Kubrick of video games, best yet these were actually games with stuff to do unlike today where you have dumb games where you walk through houses.

Mind Walker is a pretty neat game, and has a pretty nice soundtrack that actually makes you feel insane

It's not really "oh no, wrong year" thing, I just hate how indie devs think "(Pixels + Story +Progressivism) - Gameplay = art" when games like this are pretty artistic while at the same time being an actual game with a goal and things to do and challenge

Dude holy shit this game.
This game brings some weird feelings I have that are triggered by my personal view of retro technology. Feelings of virtual worlds that are infinite, but my interaction with them is claustrophobic. It's really hard to explain this.
The horizon on that matrix plane in that trail-to-crystal is a good example of a trigger to this, but, really, this whole game triggers this feeling.
