And fan translations general

Previous thread:

The Adventure of Little Ralph is a really good game. Nice graphics, environments, action. Has a down stab, which I'd like to see more of. Really nice game. The goal isn't so much to beat it, but to get the high score. To do that, you need to beat the levels as fast as possible, get as many combos as possible, and find all the fruit.

There was this one RPG for the famicom that had an OPLL sound chip added into the cartridge, like what was included in Japanese master systems - Lagrange Point.

That game will also likely never be translated due to serious technical limitations. The text in the game was already heavily compressed, so translating the entire script with English would be next to impossible.

Fortunately for this thread, I'm having to re-download some of these type of games on my desktop since they didn't pocketiso correctly on my mobile. I'll go ahead and post about them as I download them.

These first couple do work pocketed so they're good places to start. The first is called Gungage. Even though I play it the most (on the go) it's hard for me to remember the title because of that Gungrave game. It's not technically a Japanese exclusive since there's a PAL version too but US bros may have missed it and you should get the NTSC-J version anyway since what little text it has is English.

It's like a free-roaming Space Harrier or 3D World Runner (since you run & jump, not fly) right down to the enemy design. The missions have different flavors of (simple) level layouts, so it has light platforming elements but the emphasis is 90% on action. There are unlockable characters with different main and secondary weapons and it's just generally a good time. Easy to pick up and immediately start having fun for short bursts with enough depth to let you feel like you're gaining toward long-term goals. All in all, a great choice for mobile gaming and a game no one ever mentions here (PSX has a LOT of hidden gems)

This next one is apparently a whole fucking thing in Japan that led me to add it to my manga backlog but I literally just discovered it through this Playstation game. OP might like it though since it's a Playstation platformer like Ralph. It's like some chibi-horror character sort of a Pugsley/Wednesday combined I guess. The game has a bunch of story text that's all Japanese but since it's a platformer it's pretty self explanatory. Either it's really hard or I'm not grasping some kind of upgrade mechanic though.

Blade Arts is the first one that didn't PocketISO correctly or something. Plays the whole (unskippable) intro then hangs with my dude just standing there looking around, uncontrollable like some event is supposed to happen but doesn't.

Basically, this Enix game is kind of like Tomb Raider with a Resident Evil lookin' dude who has a sword, hopefully with the right sprinkling of light RPG elements to suit my taste.. But I won't know for sure until I get it running right.

Judgemental hardcore types, have no fear - if one of these pocket games really hooks me and is too deep for me to play seriously in the pocket I'll definitely burn them and play them on real hardware. If I end up loving them, I usually even get a real copy for my collection...

But I've come to a point where I've almost completely separated gaming and collecting into two different hobbies.

This one is the biggest bitch. 800 meg 2 disc download and the pocketISO conversion plays the sweet (but meaningless) intro, then freezes when you pick start. On top of that I honestly expect this game to be too hard to play in Japanese and there's no English translation but lately I kind of get off on playing extremely difficult games and there's a slim possibility I might get enough of a feel for it and be drawn in enough to plod through. I've been known to do such things.

It's some kind of RE clone but with more of a mystery angle. Enigma.

I've already "beat" bad ending Devilman for Playstation but I'll mention it because it's pretty fucking sweet - or at least I think it is but I love Devilman. If you're familiar with the manga or the anime either one you can follow the story for the game, although it isn't exactly the same as either.

The first part is like a stealth/survival horror game where you have to play fetch and avoid the demons. After you become Devilman the second part is like a tank-controls beat-em-up collection game and then after that you get RE style graded on your performance before you're allowed to do the third part. I didn't do well enough when I did it (C rank) and I haven't run through it again yet.

Aconcagua does get talked about here some but I'll still mention it. It's a survival game that involves a plane crashed on a mountain, kind of like the 1972 Andes disaster and it has some kind of Evita Perone style South American political angle too. Spoken dialogue is all English, real easy to play for non-moonspeakers. It's a point & click, which I expected to really turn me off but the part that played before the pocketISO crapped out on me were totally tolerable and I was into it. I have no idea why it isn't a tank controller though. Maybe they wanted to be different.

Iru! is another mystery/survival/horror type of game that plays from the first person and controls like King's Field. It's definitely less complex than Enigma and feels like it could be stumbled through despite the language barrier.

I don't know what it is about me that enjoys these horror games even when I have no idea what's going on. Makes it seem that much more horrible maybe.

I really hate when dudes insist on talking all over gameplay videos so I apologize for posting this in advance but it's the best game play video of this PC-FX game that actually got ported to Playstation, and I've been playing a bit of. It's an RPG with dating sim elements. I'm wondering if I should be playing the PC-FX version since it's much more likely to have adult content but so far I haven't really gotten far enough for it to matter.

Speaking of romhacking I'm assuming that we're all already aware of the English version of King's Field 1j right? It's pretty weak compared to KF3j or Shadow Tower 1 but definitely worth making a note of.

Seiya Monogatari - Anearth Stories

It's a multi-scenario RPG, you decide the main class of your character at the beginning of the game and according to that class the firsts parts of the game are a little different and your party will change.

Unlike other JRPG's, it's dungeons are more based on puzzle solving instead of battles, the game has battles, but the number is fixed so once you beat an enemy it wont respawn, instead of grinding like crazy the main objective of the game is finding the secrets and exploring the different dungeons for equipment. The game also has a remake on Saturn.

Mahou no Shoujo Silky Lip

This is more curious than good, but the game has some interesting mechanics for something released in 1992. It's an adventure game with some RPG elements, using the typical magical girl theme from the late 80's and 90's, Lip is a girl from another world sent to the Earth to study for a year and become the next queen of the magic world.

The game is structured like an anime series, so each chapter features the opening (it's really catchy) and ending with the credits. The game consists of 12 episodes, in each one of them Lip has to interact with different characters and earn points to become the next queen. This game popularized the term LIPS (Live & Interactive Picture System) and it uses a system where you have to pick an emotion (sad, angry and happy) in order to answer to other characters.

Mahou Shoujo Silky Lip was supposed to receive an enhanced port on PC Engine CD, sadly the port never came to be. Still, in 2008 an eroge company bought the rights of the game and released a VN-like game that uses the same plot as the PC Engine CD version.

Riot also used the concept of this game for a Tokusatsu inspired game that was released on Sega CD, the only bad part about that one is that they only released the first part.

Emerald Dragon

It's a classic JRPG released originally for japanese computers by Glodia. It seems like a formulaic JRPG, but the plot really shines on this one and the random battles are quite dynamic and fast.

There are many versions of this game, the only one with a fan translation is the one on Super Famicom that is almost the same as the PC Engine CD version (audio and cinematics a side).

Even from a casual look, it's pretty easy to see why Salmon Knight was never translated: It came out just a few months before the PS2, has full voice acting on everyone but the main character (that SCEA's retarded policies mean has to be dubbed), all 4 heroes and partners have different speaking styles that are difficult, if not impossible in some places, to render meaningfully different in English (and reducing the choice to cosmetic would be a huge downgrade). I find it mind boggling that this game still has no english translation. It was the only game to use the VRC7 chip, so it had really unique audio for the Famicom. Now look at this tech demo for the PS1 and how awesome that T-REx looks. It can do that because there's nothing else to render on screen, so it can focus on making the niceest looking T-Rex a PS1 can make. Similar thing with that intro. It's not really having to render that much at a time. Just a few characters going through some scripted movements. So you can make it look as nice as possible.

Actually, it isnt much different in-game, but you are right about the amount of content on screen. These games just use few polygons on the scenarios, if you watch one in-game video you can see the trick right away, most of the scenario assets are actually flat textures. Still, they made a pretty good job because it might fool while you are playing.

So I put a few hours into this after getting stuck on the first stage trying to make an impossible jump up and out of a poison pit using the less-than-tomb-raider-precise controls. It really should have a way to hop back from an edge.

Anyway, it turned out what I needed to do was press the action button in exactly the right place on this flaw in the wall and my partner came and gave me P.E. which I assume is plastic explosives, not physical education because once I pushed a block, made her talk to me like two more times and activated the P.E. (which a US game would have called C4) at EXACTLY the right spot it opened up and I went through. It was pretty frustrating and I might have dumped it except I found a sweet two-tined sword with a blowtorch light effect then fell down a pit and had to fight a dragon! Awesome!

But then I played for almost an hour last night and it was essentially all moon-story, plus my sword was gone and turned back into my shitty combat knife. They introduced like six characters so I'm a bit dubious that the story may be too involved (and unskippable) for me but for now I'm keeping at it.

Clock Tower for the Super Nintendo. English-patched horror game with branching storylines and multiple endings. The sprite animation is nicely done and it's surprisingly gory/scary for a SNES game. Also everyone has probably already played this.

The only place where the west really gets stylized, full photo or painting covers like these anymore are on albums.

The best covers still come from the atari and have gradualy decressed in creativity since then, and maybe it's because with the lack of impressive technology the more impressive the art work there had to be to stimulate the imagination. Goemon 4 has pretty graphics, but the levels aren't nearly as interesting or well designed, and the additional characters honestly don't add anything (you can only switch between characters in the final world, and honestly Sasuke is the best character by far so it doesn't matter).

Not sure if this was posted in any threads, but there goes:

Nekketsu Tairiku Burning Heroes

A very formulaic JRPG with a few twists. The main selling point is eight different characters and scenarios to choose from (four are available from the start while the rest are unlocked as you beat them). You have freedom in recruiting different NPCs from towns and taverns, there is only a couple of mandatory party members. You only control your main character while the NPCs are AI-controlled, which is pretty unique for a standard sideview turn-based JRPG type. Another of the game's quirks is the hot blood meter that grows as your main character takes damage and can be used to summon a powerful beast to deal massive amounts of damage to the opposition when it reaches 100%; the beast levels with your character.

The quirks are not perfectly implemented though; the 8 different scenarios are fairly similar to each other and often make you play through the same locations over and over with slight deviations, what makes consecutive playthroughs a bit of a repetitive chore despite a single chapter not lasting more than a couple hours. The AI tends to not be very smart and likes to burn out the characters' MP using spells in trivial random battles while the main characters are fairly strapped for tactical options and the battle system, despite having quirks like formations that affect your stats and the "hot blood" meter, is extremely straightforward and formulaic - you just mash the attack button and occasionally use the hot blood summon or a healing item, skip the latter if you got the OP healer NPC. The titular hot blood summoning system could also be more interesting but serves as a free 999 "overdrive" attack you can use once in a while. But overall it's a pretty fun little classic JRPG and 16-bit JRPG lovers could have a couple evenings of fun with it. It also has a loli who fights in her father's oversized armor suit as one of the player characters.

I've been playing it a lot lately. The second stage forces you to get comfortable with the controls, you just have to stop expecting them to be identical to Tomb Raider which takes a while because they're so similar to Tomb Raider superficially. The secret is that the look button actually turns your character, so that's how you line up jumps.

Unfortunately I can't find the fourth piece of the jade tablet and I'm getting kind of frustrated but eventually I'll find it. It's a bitch that enemies respawn but health items don't so repeated backtracking punishes you and it doesn't seem like you can save other than between stages.

I'm not even feeling guilty about judicious use of save states.

you could just buy the shit that sells high and auction it on ebay
autistic collectors go nuts for shit like "sealed in box collector's edition Some Weeaboo Game Nobody White's Heard of III"
you could make money off of having no talent other than going in Japan.

Another very obscure JRPG: Arabian Nights

Very unique arabian theme, setting and storyline centered about dinns and arabian mythology. Unique battle system that makes use of collectible elemental cards both the player and the enemy encounters can use to change the battlefield to put certain global effects into play (damage to all enemies each turn, increase elemental resistance of all allies etc) and to knock lower level enemy cards out of the field, allowing for some pretty unique tactical solutions for the genre. The graphics are gorgeous and stylish (though the battle animations aren't great and low-frame). However, the game seems rushed at certain parts, and is distressingly easy, making its unique card gimmick almost useless at most times. It's very original and most certainly worth a look if you like JRPGs, however.

You mean like Beyond Oasis, Crystal Warriors, Defenders of Oasis, the Exile series, Magic of Sheherazade, the Prince of Persia series, Sinbad in the Cave of Wonders, Arabian Fight, Arabian Magic, all the Aladdin games, Equinox/Solstice, Monster World IV, Genie's Curse, Magic Carpet, Legend of Oasis and, of course, Shantae just to name a few?

No mention of Boku no Natsuyasumi? It popped up a lot in cozy game threads. It's a simulation game where you live through a boy's summer vacation in a Japanese countryside and do summer vacationy things. It has a really great atmosphere and even voice acting.

The GBA game is a good rip off of modern Castlevania by Konami. The first NES game kinda sucks but the second one has been translated in English. It was a nice RPG whose one fault is that stupid gimmick with the misty screen. Ruined the fun for me

>> No.1593463

>>1593457

choro q 1 probably won't be, since it was released in europe as "penny racers" (recommend playing it untranslated, due to pal games not running at the proper speed)

of the spin-offs, q-boat is fun

Do-Re-Mi Fantasy is the sequel to Milon's Secret Castle and a really nice (if somewhat by-the-book) platformer on the SNES. It's reasonably long and decently challenging, and there's no need to know Japanese, though it has an English translation if you really want to know what the story is.

If you give this a go, find the fluffy boots (they let you float) and for the love of god DON'T LOSE THEM. Some of the later levels (especially the volcano ones) are very difficult without them.

Basted (PC-Engine CD)

It's an action-adventure game, kinda looks like an action RPG, but it's more like a parody of that genre. The game also resembles those late 80's and early 90's OVA full of fan service. It's pretty short (3 hours) and kinda playable without japanese knowledge (story isnt complex, but you might get lost about where to go or what to do).
