In retrospect, this is probably my favourite N64 game.

Insane rubberbanding.

It's still possible to beat the standard version cups without losing a race with any ship but the DD cups become nearly impossible to beat at times.

Also, Night Thunder best racer.

That's what prevents me from loving the F-Zero games. There's no middle ground when it comes to their difficulty levels. They just go from piss easy to infuriately unfair.

>> No.1547220

>>1547212
Pretty much. If you fuck up at all, you lose. Which is annoying because you really want to kill your rival on the hardest setting to give yourself some leeway. But if you fuck up a kill, you'll probably be left behind.

>>1547217
Honestly the only F-Zero games that are total bullshit are the SNES games. F-Zero X has terrible rubberbanding but it's still perfectly doable if you have a good understanding of the course and use the right ship settings. You can make minor mistakes on many tracks and still win on Master difficulty if you're good at the game.

On the other hand F-Zero almost completely negates any lead you can get with its rubberbanding system and there are extra ships on the track purely for the reason of screwing you up and making you crash. Not to mention the collision system is incredibly infuriating because it makes your ship turn to the side, rendering smooth recovery an impossibility.

>>1547220
What you do then is kill 5 other cars to get an extra life, and then restart the race.

does that roulette thing actually do something? My friend and I play the game every now and then. he's a pro at it, since he played it a lot as a kid, but I pretty much suck at it, so, i'm doing that roulette thing fairly often. I never noticed it having any effect on the game though.

I remember this in the first one. I'd spend minutes in 1st and then the first time I knock a civilian car and slow down for one second four opponents would shoot right past me like they'd been 10 feet behind me the whole time.

There has to be some something shady going on in the background.

>> No.1547389

You can deplete almost all of your friend's life if you get the right sequence.

>> No.1547392

>>1547384
I remember reading that it's because the game can't render the entire course and all the racers on it, so when you get a certain distance ahead or behind it despawns the other racers and keeps them at that distance.

Or something along those lines, at least. I'm not an expert on SNES F-Zero because it pisses me off.

I recall there always being rubberbanding, sure.

but what I am remembering mostly in F-Zero X on the hard difficulties...was like reverse rubberbanding for you or something:

>start race
>going okay first 10 seconds
>everyone just starts passing you for no apparent reason.
>nothing you can do.
>try to block or ram, just slows you down more
>back of the pack, making literally no headway
>this is hell.

The AI is simply faster than you on Master in general in addition to the rubberbanding. It's somewhat hard to avoid getting passed on the first lap but on almost every track in the game you should be able to hit 10th place by the end of the first lap, and then reach first during the second and stay there during the rest of the race.

The AI likes to rubberband a lot but there are hard limits to how fast they can go on most tracks because they aren't good at corners and they can't take shortcuts. Sometimes you can even force them to go so fast that they end up flying off cylinders.

>> No.1547730

I never understood this game. Every time I went fast my car spiraled out of control. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. I was playing with a keyboard so maybe that has something to do with it.

Playing with a keyboard is like asking to lose control. You need to be able to adjust your turns very precisely with an analog stick in order to prevent sliding. Try it again sometime with a controller.

>> No.1547778

>>1547772
Nah, you're just shit and want to make excuses about being forced to cheat. A challenge is a challenge. There are no arbitrary good or bad specifications on challenges. If you treat the AI as mobile obstacles that must be passed in order to win then it wouldn't even be an issue. AI aren't supposed to be exactly like real players in the first place because then winning would be literally impossible.

racing games are about mastering the track, playing the track, not figuring out ridiculous AI exploits and trying to mitigate and exploit them in order to win

>> No.1547792

>>1547789
Except you don't win in F Zero X by exploiting the AI, you win by going fast. As I posted about earlier there is a limit to how well the AI can race.

As long as you play skillfully and master the courses you can beat all four cups on Master difficulty with the slowest ship in the game every single time. You don't even need to kill your rival or deliberately gimp your speed at any point.

Except this never happens. Ever. You can stay in first place the entire race as soon as you reach it. Like I said, you never have to deliberately let the AI pass you. No exploits are necessary as long as you're fast enough.

have fun with that idiot exploding everytime, it's how gazelle became an android in the first place. his ship is just flimsy as fuck. at master difficulty you need at least an A rank speed and at least B rank body to get anywhere.

it tries to mimic things like batman beyond and the 90s spiderman cartoon

is episodic and starts out slow but picks up around episode 22, and the last 10-12 episodes have a steady plot & the drawing / animation quality improves

watched episodes in a random order on youtube, haven't seen every single one but did see most of them

it's the kind of thing i didn't care for at first but gradually warmed up to the characters as i watched and kind of appreciated the character dynamic between falcon and the main character

tl;dr is it good? not really should you watch it? idk your call, i'm just saying it gets better than it starts out

this guy uploaded all the episodes on youtube, turn on annotations for subs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd4kOLFi8T8

actually recommend not watching them in order and just skipping around
