The port seems to be well done, the controls are weird but can get used to them I guess.

From the readme;

Controls:
Analog - move (in menu too)
UP/DOWN - change weapon
LEFT/RIGHT - map zoom
START - show last message (select, in menu)
SELECT - menu (cancel, in menu)
CROSS - fire
CIRCLE - open
TRIANGLE - map

The only flaw it has is that you can't customise the controls, but other than that it's alright.

And welp, there you go. That was Episode 1 with no secrets at all

Highlights:

You don't get the chainsaw at all in this run (but who needs it anyway because SHOTGUNS)
You don't get the chaingun until E1M4
You get the RL until E1M7
You never take a single Soulsphere

Also this kind of run helps you to learn to love the shotgun.

So that leaves us with yet another id software map making seal-of-quality feature: All levels should (and are) doable with no secrets at all. Regardless of difficulty level and moster placement, this is a practice which should be taken into consideration for the better of this community

I picked up The Official Doom II Strategy Guide from an old book store for shits today. The whole thing is pretty neat, but I'm pretty surprised at this "Infantry Basics" chapter in particular. It's ten pages on how to work together in a coop game as a fire team. Like it's all about team formations and marching order, the kinds of things I would never correlate with Doom. Is this how people actually play or is it to go along with the whole drill sergeant narration?

The secret to good weapon animation is whether the animation is fluid and looks awesome.
The Super Shotgun is one of the best weapons in video game history, and it's partially because of that reload giving extra feedback to the player. It has a choppy animation and very few frames, but it looks better than offset-spamming-every-tic Classic Rivalry shit by far.

I've beaten Doom E1-E3 and I'm up to Map26 in Doom 2 with it. It's perfectly playable and actually probably one of the best-balanced mods I've ever played, it just has a really steep learning curve on account of having to re-learn basically everything you thought you knew about Doom, even things as simple as shooting enemies or healing wounds. The enemies are among the smartest I've seen in the Doom engine, and they're all equally deadly. It's a ton of fun once you get over the learning curve, and with a buddy it's the best survival mod ever.

Also, that may have looked god-tier, but the caco got lucky...

plasma in that game works like an IRL high-energy laser...it first sends out some meh-tier invisible beams that burn the target, but as the beam is held on a specific spot for longer amounts of time, it heats the surface and causes it to spontaneously deflagrate.
if he had shifted position better/faster, he would have caused the caco to adjust aim, which would have caused the beam to not hit the same spot twice, resulting in no explosion.

Now then: I will admit that HD isn't really possible on maps that don't provide adequate cover...if the map is designed with the intent that you should be dodging shots actively, or worse, getting hit intentionally, then the map probably won't be playable.

Overall, though, if you're good at/enjoy games like STALKER or SWAT4, then HD will be right up your alley... its doom the way /k/ would do it

My friend (he trades with armory, especially swords / medieval stuff) took a look at the sprites. He wasn't able to recognize any of the sprites. After I abandoned all hope, he suddenly says: "Oh wait, this one looks familiar". He did some research and found the original two-handed sword from Witchaven.

I bought an used sword (not the golden one, its silver / bronze, a mix of both). It was quite cheap, only 65€ (~90$).

It's not dark enough for the flashlight to be used all the time, but there's plenty of dark areas in Doom 3.

Reloading is used to control pacing.

If the game allows both then the pacing is going to get fucked up.

I think my first exposure to doom was a modded version of it I downloaded about a decade ago, which replaced everything with simpsons characters. I played most of that, and then I just kinda forgot about it. Almost a decade later I discover Real Guns Advanced 2, and that gets me back into Doom all those years later, I discover the source ports, beat Doom 1 and 2 "Vanilla" (No mods, but using mouselook, opengl, etc), and then I discover Brutal Doom, fall in love with that... And now I've been following the /vr/ threads since the first day of /vr/.

As for music, I generally just put on whatever. I really like Machinae Supremacy though.

I think my favorite gameplay mod wad would have to be Accessories to Murder, really really satisfying feeling weapons.
As for maps... It's hard to say. Hellbound is probably one of the best ones I've played recently. I generally don't have the patience to play through a full blown 32 Maps, and when I actually do, there's a good chance I never actually wanna play it again after that. I do like to replay most of Doom 2 Reloaded from time to time, and I like replaying Hi Tech Hell 2. I might try replaying Hellbound at some point as well.

felt like playing retro stuff after completing Policenauts; I'm a big fan of fps and I'd enjoyed a bit of Doom 2 years ago so when I found this thread, I played Doom through fully and fell in love with it.

All kinds of music, various caribbean genres, lots of metal - especially death metal and grindcore, indie-ish stuff and sometimes electronic/alternative type music. I'll listen to anything that sounds good to my ears but unfortunately I never really like most of the songs on the charts, once in a while there's a gem, but I don't really like corny music.

I was young. Real young, and Doom II was a hot new thing. I don't think I had a full grasp on reading yet, but my Dad let me watch him play on.. I think an iMac. Being a cheeky little bugger, I eventually found the file path to it and started playing on my own. My Mom almost cut me from ever playing it again when she saw some of the splattered bodies on Map32's starting room, but never acted on it. (I later got grounded from the computer due to skimming through an art file for a Duke 3D because it was a fan one and had some [extremely pixelated] titties.)

The video game music. I was enamored by it, but at the time I listened to stuff like Eiffel 65 - sue me, I was little. I blame Doom during my development for my later love of rock and metal. I actually listened to the Doom rendition of many songs before discovering the real things.

Currently: qstylezx.pk3. I love Quake Style, even more than Brutal Doom. It feels like Doom-expanded and thankfully (most) of the additional content fits Doom's style. The ambient effects (foot steps, water splashes, decorations breaking) really adds to it.

Fondest Memory: cydreams.wad(?)
I wasn't even eight by the time it came out, maybe even seven. The radically different gameplay, unusual level designs, and detail was totally enamoring. This is making me want to go back and play it some more.

1. I played it when I was little, literally. I saw my parents playing it and Quake. One day I discovered that Goldeneye TC for Edge/3DGE or Christian or whatever it's called now that came with freedoom (which I thought was the actual Doom 2) I knew somewhat about modding through downloading a bunch of wolf3d TCs, but this was the first time I played a modified version of Doom, which I didn't know at the time was possible (even though I recall finding out about Batman Doom before that sometime before). And then I found a download of the actual Doom 2, and then sometime later discovered Skulltag (in like the 95/96 days), which introduced me to Doom multiplayer, which I also didn't know about. I was blown the fuck away.

2. My tastes tend to vary with my mood. One day I could be listening to black metal, the next chillout type stuff, another stuff like trap and vaporwave and yet another old school hiphop and funk and yet another demoscene stuff.

3. That's a tough one. One that springs to my mind is Epic 2. Eternal's levels have great atmosphere, and this is no exception.
My favorite weapons mod is probably Samsara or Doom Enhanced.
