I'd honestly say that it isn't worth buying at all, unless you wish to witness all sorts of fucked up shit in all its shitty special effects failures and uncomfortable uncanny valley glory. It pretty much aimed to be as controversial and violent as possible to both contribute to and make fun of the whole 'video games make you violent' thing. It's not good at all, the ending isn't good, the combat isn't good, and it's only worth playing if you want to see fascinating and disgusting stuff. Even the fucked up and detailed game over screens in Waxworks are more entertaining to watch.

Y'all niggas got good taste.

In keeping with the retro PC theme, I'd like to mention Clive Barker's Undying. It's probably not on par with the other stuff ITT, but it was the only decent horror-themed game I had as a young'un.

It wasn't really scary, but it had a great atmosphere, some very extensive lore, and there are more than a few enemies, locations, and events that are quite disturbing.

Phantasmagoria is kinda freaky. The pacing is a little unnerving at times, and the end sequence can be a little tricky to figure out.

You're gonna laugh, but Zork: Nemesis fucking upset the hell out of me. It has none of the humour or lightheartedness of any of the other entries in the series.

the pc date thing is just a general rule everyone goes by, like discussing emulation on the wii.

2 things
1. The game was released for windows 2000, being compatible on other os' is irrelevant
2. Stop getting butt hurt and feeding the trolls

Seconding Phantasmagoria. Those fucking deaths, too.

Phantasmagoria 2, on the other hand, was pretty funny, especially the scene where a computer starts to move on its own, and it knocks over a coffee cup and some music with catchy beat starts to play.

I wonder what Phantasmagoria 3 would've looked like. They had said that they wanted each Phantasmagoria game to be set in different location and theme.

>The game was released for windows 2000, being compatible on other os' is irrelevant
bullshit. it was released for every os it was compatible with, not just the most recent. in what fucking sense was it not? besides the fact that the sticky makes no mention of "released for". the wording is "computer games . . . on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier" and is it on windows 95, meaning is it playable? yes, yes it is. hence retro.
>the pc date thing is just a general rule everyone goes by
what date? the different dates that everyone just pulls out of their ass, or the date of 1999 used by people who can't read? if it's not a rule then it's not a fucking rule you idiot.

Since you are overwhelmed by your fedora and autism, along with your compulsion to ignore the rules and shitpost, I separated the clauses for you.

>> No.1545683 [DELETED]

>>1545560
if the intention is for "launched in 1999 and earlier" to apply to "consoles," "computer games," "arcade games," and "platforms," then it's a grammatical error because as written it would apply to "any other forms," rather than "platforms" and I'm not even sure how to fix it because it's so odd. I think you would pretty much have to make two sentences.

It's very clunky, and it's only on seldom occasions that the game is as disturbing as it's said to be. That whole scene is fucked up, but it's maybe one of the three notably disturbing scenes in the game.

Plus, once you learn that it's all just a bit social commentary on desensitization to violence and sex in the 90's via movies and games, the thrill really wears off.
