Maka Maka, it's unfinished, buggy, and you can kill the last boss' final form in one hit. I wonder if that was intentional. Looks fun, at least.

Secret of the stars wasn't great, and while every piece of dialogue sucked or was not accurate enough to be helpful, it at least did some neat things, like having two parties you could switch between, and an assload of people to recruit which was a neat little novelty at the time. Also the combo system for your main party. Really the worst thing was the part where you are forced to use the secondary party after probably not using them the entire game since you weren't required to before that point, and then you gotta grind forever.

Yeah that was fairly cool. Although I think there were some big balance problems amongst the spells? Like, if you were on a screen with two or three dangerous enemies, you could either kill them pretty quickly, albeit one at a time, with your cheap projectile spells... or kill them slightly faster with some super-expensive full-screen spell that'd leave you crippled for lack of MP? I don't remember ever actually finding a use for the bigger, cooler spells....

I had fun with the game as a kid, anyway. And even if I played it now, I wouldn't like it nearly as much but I'd still have more fun than I would with a game like Secret of the Stars. Lagoon's weirdo tiny-sword challenge is much more interesting than some entry-level JRPG's nonexistent have-you-done-enough-grinding challenge.

I enjoyed Lagoon as a tyke but I've not touched it in like 20 years. A friend of mine and I were working on a game using a magic system inspired by the staff/crystal system from Lagoon. It was meant to be some SRPG that utilised several magic systems for each of several character classes. One such class, Shamans, used a combination of fetishes, such as staffs, foci and crystals, to various in-game effects.

It was pretty bad, but it's hardly the worst thing ever. There's no need to get dramatic about it, OP.

Technically speaking, it holds up okay. There are no major bugs, everything works the way it's "supposed" to, and it's more or less a workable RPG. It's just an extremely uninspired, by the numbers plot with hard-as-balls design and shit art direction.
I can't help but think that it would have been remembered more fondly if it had come out for the NES, around the time of Dragon Warrior IV. That's about the level it's at. But it came out on the SNES, and, well, fuck that bullshit.

When I was a kid, my neighbor rented it from the video store and I would come over to watch him and his mom play it; this was a frequent way for me to pass the time, since they were both pretty big on console games at the time.
Anyway, they managed to get up to around two thirds through the game, around the time the B-Party becomes mandatory and you have to start taking them through their dungeons. It took them three rentals to make it that far, in part due to the ridiculous difficulty curve, along with its tendency to not tell you what you were supposed to be doing. Because of those factors, they finally hit a wall around that point, and finally returned it to the store, swearing to never rent it again. I didn't see the endgame until I found a Let's Play almost twenty years later.
It's pretty bad.

But still, there are worse games.

It ain't great to look at, but for the time it was released, PQ is a solid RPG. I like many of the innovations it tried to implement. The story was fairly simple and straightforward, but so was the story for PSIII:GoD and that game has a decent-sized following.
The problem both with PSIII:GoD and PQ is that they're a little too different from the norm, PSIII from the general PS body of work and universe and PQ from the console RPG. They're like the Zelda IIs of their peers.

They each tried something new to varying degrees of success but ultimately yielded games that were about 7/10 each. Not head-for-the-hills bad. everyone-should-play-at-least-once different nor this-is-enjoyable-and-recommended good.

Meh. I liked the way leveling up worked. I liked the way magic worked. I like the way adding party members worked. I like the way healing worked. And the way these things were done had not been done in console RPGs before then and done by very few console RPGs since. It had a lot of potential, as seen by the quality of its J-only sequel (which fulfilled that potential and made a very, very good game), but ultimately poor execution.

The graphics are bad and colours washed out in PQ, yes, and the music not very good, but the game itself is nowhere near as bad as SotS.
But hey, if you dislike it, that's fine, too. We're all friends here. :3

That game is a fucking fever dream with it's dreary ass depressing town music and art style for the world. And let's not forget losing the trial for spirit magic displayed that creepy face.

It has a sequel which I think got fan-translation, Lennus 2?
