>that feel when a Google search with smarter interpreters reveals the reason you were unable to find gameplay video of the obscure Japanese exclusive Playstation game you're thinking of getting

The uploader exclusively referred to it as being "for PS1", not even using the word "Playstation"

It was the code name. I used to call it PSX until sony released the PSX, now I call it "PSOne" or "original playstion".

Exactly. It's like calling the N64 the "Ultra 64."

Why? I mean, even people who know about it more than likely aren't going to think you're referring to the DVR. Most anyone who grew up with the Playstation are going to remember it being abbreviated as PSX almost everywhere. Why change how you refer to it because they made some other piece of hardware that almost nobody cares about?

I feel you on the Xbox thing, though. That's quite the clusterfuck of a naming system Microsoft has.

>> No.1540547

It was also used to refer to the playstation well after the system launched. Sometimes code names stick around, especially if the name is basically the initials of the product anyways.

I can't really tell you why nobody referred to the n64 by its old code name but did for the playstation. In the states it might have something to do with SCEA wanting to actually call it PSX instead of playstation. The name just stuck around. Personally now that we have 2 3 and 4, ps1 makes more sense, but thats not how the system was referred to.

Here's the real story, and buckle up. It seems that, to the key demographic (17 year old boys), in the West, the name "Playstation" was testing poorly because of the word "play" having a childish connotation.

The whole line was on the brink of being completely rebranded to PSX at release and lots of official documentation came out with that name up to very close to the release date.

Then some high ranking old rich dude at Sony said "This is nothing. You should have heard what they said about the Walkman"

All the young dudes quit panicking. Playstation was released and enjoyed great dominance of the market.

Lots of insiders and the hardcore fans were pretty used to hearing it called the PSX by then though so... it stuck much harder.
