Do you guys remember Sega?

They used to make games that didn't have Sonic the Hedgehog in them.

We called these games "Not Sonics".

Post Sega games, characters, series, franchises, etc. that aren't about fast blue insectivores.

Only because the console ports of Wonder Boy and Monster Land had different titles from the arcade originals. The series goes:
Wonder Boy (aka Super Wonder Boy)
Wonder Boy in Monster Land (aka Monster World)
Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair
Monster World II: The Dragon's Trap (aka Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap)
Wonder Boy V: Monster World III (aka Wonder Boy in Monster World)
Monster World IV

Artists frequently develop their own style which can be seen throughout their work.

Sega has so many IPs. Why did they piss them all away?

Nintendo was smart enough to incite interest in their characters with games like smash brothers.

Sega only recently started making games like all-star racing.

>> No.1540210

Sega never actually learned how to create a name for themselves in the domestic market. Even today most of us think of Sega as 'that amazing arcade brand who also made Sonic'. They would have failed hard if they didn't have their arcade reputation to back them up.
Nintendo on the other hand is known for their characters.

Good. Meh. Good.

Each Good is worth 2 points, CD ver better is worth 1 point, Meh is worth no points and Shit is worth negative 2 points. Bad is worth negative one point, but you don't have any game on there that qualifies as 'bad.'
To tally, your score is 8/18. Considering the scores can vary from -18 up through +18, that's a score of about 72%, a passing grade.

Gonna have to disagree with you on that one.
I like the rotoscoped cutscenes on the genesis better than the 3D cutscenes on the CD.
They match the game better.

The background music on the CD is obnoxious and overbearing. I prefer the ambience of the Genesis version.

It really annoys me that people keep saying that! Sure, todays Sega is just a shadow of its former self, but they still make not Sonics. They made some pretty good ones last gen too, but this thread just shows that NOBODY CARED for games like Outrun Online Arcade(or 2006), Afterburner Climax, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, Virtua Fighter 5 FS, several Yakuza games, Virtua Tennis 3, Binary Domain, House of the Dead 4, House of the Dead: Overkill, Valkyria Chronicles, Phantasy Star Portable 2, Initial D games, Sega Rally Revo, Castle of Illusion remake, Nights: Journey of Dreams...

And those are just the games they made. They still publish great stuff like Bayonetta, Vanquish, Mad World, Infinite Space, Total War series, Condemned, Aliens: Infestation, Crush, 428(this is jap exclusive), Chromehounds, Resonance of Fate...

They also make arcade games, but those often stay in japan, like pic related.

Man, Sega's arcade division never stopped being good.

also, none of those games are /vr/ but they're still boss as fuck (dunno about the last three on the "made by Sega" list)

Sega does great stuff. I'm a bit of a Sonic fan, but when I think Sega, I think of their Model 2-era hits and the like. House of the Dead, Daytona, Virtual On, that sort of thing.

And then earlier stuff, where Sega was innovating and making more games using 3D space than most other devs (the Yu Suzuki classics like Hang-On, Space Harrier, and OutRun in particular, but there were other great games like OutRunners (which is still a gorgeous game, even though it's 1992-era scaled sprite 3D) and Galaxy Force II).

To me, Sega will always be an arcade game developer. That's what their best work has been, and continues to be (well, I dunno about their post-2007 arcade output, since I've never seen anything later than that from Sega in the States, even at my local arcade that's loaded with JP imported cabs).

>>1537339
man, the fact that my local arcade still has a decently maintained VO cab is so great

On the other hand, I've been getting trounced by my one friend almost constantly every time I go, and he plays Fei-Yen (I do Viper II -- sometimes I can win with Temjin but I usually get trounced even harder if I pick him). I just need to get better at dash-vectoring so I can fuck him up proper. Viper II's fuck-all health is usually what kills me -- Fei-Yen's CW in super mode takes a stupid amount of health.

Heh, it's like we're destined to reply one 1 hour apart.

Anyhow, once you download NullDC.

Go to Options in NullDC and do this, so it'll look like mine.

>Resolution:
Maximum Supported

>Aspect Ratio:
Extra Geom (Stands for Extra Geometry, surprisingly the Dreamcast had the spare ram to load everything outside of the frame apart form props. Meaning you get a Pseudo HD. Works with a lot of games, so keep it on.)

>Paletted Textures:
I haven't seen this do anything. Leave it or mess around with it. It doesn't matter.

>Sort:
Strip (Triangle makes the water and clouds look worse, and Off makes them look really bad as well. Strip is the most accurate.)

>Modifier Volumes
Normal and Clip

>Z Buffer Mode
D24FS8 (Your best option, the other options are kind of buggy.)

Also, some tips.

To speed up the game, check off limit speed and audio in Aica, and for better sounding music, tick DSP emulation in the same place, oh an pic related if you want rumble in your controller.

Enjoy your pseudo HD Skies of Arcadia.

Sega got bought by Sammy, who have pretty much turned Sega into a third-rate publisher, and because they are now publisher focused, they are more interested in licenced IPs than their own. When Sammy bought Sega, they made little secret of their contempt for Sega's IP's and talent.

Sega's Western Retail Franchises:
Sonic
Football Manager
Total War
Aliens

Only ONE of those is an actual Sega IP; the other two were created by EA and Eidos, Aliens is of course a 20th Century Fox IP.

>> No.1550910

>>1544817

The amount of talent that has left Sega since the Sammy takeover is shocking, and the disintegration and destruction, largely at the behest of Nagoshi (a man who has not made a game truly popular outside of the Japanese market) it seems,of Sega's internal studios is catastrophic.

I love VF5 FS but Jesus Christ it's bare bones with hardly any modes.

I do wonder how Rieko Kodama felt when Sega execs pretty much insulted her by saying Sega didn't make any good RPGs.
They seem to slag off their in-house people alot, while kissing the asses of the dicks at Gearbox and throwing money at them..

Sammy bought Sega for their arcades, they don't care about the rest of the company.

The fact is, the "Sega Brand" is pretty much dead now, they publish other people's stuff and pretty much nothing of their own in the West

Total War is the same regardless of who publishes it, and no one thinks of it as a Sega game, because EA created it. Same with Footie Manager, everyone knows its not a Sega product and their logo is just slapped onto it.

Because it was developed by Treasure.

I'd love a new Fantasy Zone that played like a traditional horizontal shmup. The originals were fun and all (the Megadrive one is my favorite), but losing your weapon after a set amount of time and the shop system were kinda lousy. However, the design and style would make for an excellent shoot 'em up.

Doubt it. Yakuza series has been on point. Sega knows how to make a good brawler.

Except for the fact that they co-own the Gunstar IP with Treasure, which they agreed to fund after Treasure made that Ronald McDonald game for Sega.

Noryoshi Oba is no longer at Sega so a true Shinobi game (ie not the 3DS abortion) is not possible.

Oba wasn't the original Shinobi creator though. He only worked on The Super Shinobi series and the PS2 games.

pls stahp

It's a really solid game. Great graphics, sound, control, and stage design. 9/10 on all counts. That's not mediocre.

although, I can understand why one mightn't like it, it's kind of slow and a bit easy

>>1555916
I've heard (from a source I usually consider reliable on 2D action games) that other than it looking retarded as hell graphically, it's actually a pretty decent game. True?
