ITT: Japan-exclusive games that...
>have an english translation patch OR don't require understanding Japanese to play
>are NOT turn-based fantasy RPGs unless they have something quirky about them that sets them apart (examples: Live-a-Live, Mother)

I hear the later versions are better about the ridiculous encounter rate. The iOS version is apparently based on the GBA version with the PSX version music, so it's probably more bearable.

I don't get why it's such a bother to so many people. Sure the encounter rate is kinda high but the battles go by fast enough that it's no big deal.

I mean... you can Auto through like 99% of all encounters in the game, and they get especially easy when you get to the point where you can buy machineguns and sleep/stone bullets or w/e.

They're less of a chore to go through than any encounter in any Squaresoft title, any Dragon Quest title, etc.etc.

I disagree because you have to be alert during many encounters in SMT. And the autobattle is kinda shit in this game because as I recall, it keeps going until the battle is over or until you die.

And encounters in SMT1 can get ridiculous because you can find yourself in another battle after getting out of the first one without even taking a single step. This can happen a ton of times to the point where it seems you can have like 4 battles in a row on a single tile. It slows things down way too much.

You can press/hold/mash B to make the autobattle stop. (I never really got how it worked)

Most enemies aren't too dangerous either. And even then those that are are easy to recognize so you know which ones to be careful around.

Also I never really saw them as multiple battles in a row, just different types of enemies in the same encounter.

But oh well... I can't deny that the game's system is dated but I don't think it's all that bad really. For a first person JRPG it could be waaaaaaay slower and clunkier.

oriental blue: ao no tengai, a gba jrpg with a branching storyline (although all branches culminate in the same ending.) you can outright lose boss fights and things like that, which will affect how the story unfolds. even friendlier than dragon quest--you don't even lose money when you die, so be sure to tinker. tengai makyou is a damn big deal in japan and this is the only(?) installment that's ever been translated.

speaking of dragon quest and big deals in japan, this game was translated by the guy who translated DQ Monsters: Caravan Heart, which is also relevant to this thread if you haven't played it.

Famicom Detective Club: Part 2 for the SNES/SFC

Developed by Nintendo in-house. Famicom Detective Club was a popular text-heavy detective adventure series originally released in on the Famicom Disk System.

The second game (prequel to the first) was totally redone for the Super Famicom with new art, extra animation, all sorts of UI tweaks, and new music composed by Kenji Yamamoto (OF SUPER METROID FAME HOLY SHIT).

The SFC remake was released through the Japan-only Nintendo Power service, where you would buy games at kiosks and upload them to a flash cartridge.

The Adventure of Little Ralph is a PS1 platformer heavily inspired on the SNES platformers, but with the graphical update of a PS1 game. Apart from having challenging sections each boss is a fighting game styled fight where you do commands in the same way as SF2.
