I want an SNES. I've been trying to reconfigure my life and kicking my interest in modern games for this seems to be the right move. I just want a minimal experience. I'd rather not emulate, but I'm not against it entirely.

Anyway I have a question, how will it perform on a HDTV? It's all I have, and I'd hate for it to look like piss.

not as bad as an NES, and it will somewhat depend on the model, but in general not good. you can get a CRT for free or a few dollars usually if you look around.

Unless you can switch your HDTV to 4:3 it should be fine. There is a bit of noticable lag however. You also don't have to kick your interest in modern gaming to enjoy SNES, especially if you were around when it was new. It's as simple as turning off your PS3 and then jumping back a few generations.

It doesn't bother me at all.

For now I've been connecting my laptop to the TV via HDMI. Is that a better or worse picture than SNES?

What kind of stuff are you doing on your laptop while it's hooked up through HDMI? Emulating?

Well yes, it's going to look better than an actual SNES using composite video or HDMI (which may be stretched if you haven't set things up on the tv). I used to use RF which looks a little nicer but it only does Mono.

What's the best control option? Right now I use a dualshock 3 and it's awkward.

I use a dualshock too. It's pretty good for me as long as I stick to the D-pad for 2D games.

You have four buttons for A,B,X,Y and you can just throw L and R up top.

Is it really better on real hardware comparing to SNES9X on i7 laptop?

Get a CRT.

The only way to play retro games is the way that they were intended.

Go to the dump and find a CRT, try to get one from 1985-90s vintage; shit will look so good.
