Why don't more JRPGs take note from this game? It's one of the only ones I can stand to play, since the battles are actually fun and I don't dread walking around outside of a dungeon.

Probably because it didn't have random battles, and you actually saw the enemies that you fought. The screen didn't do stupid shit and flash and completely take you out of the immersion.

Some ambushes might as well have been random battles and seeing an enemy before a fight starts wasn't new in jrpgs, it's just that CT did it for pointless mook fights.
