1509425 No.1509425[DELETED]  [Reply] [Original]

Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine is playable on Mupen64Plus. Why isn't this bigger news? Infernal Machine has been considered a sort of holy grail of N64 emulation for ages.

I used mupen64plus-video-z64.dll and mupen64plus-rsp-cxd4-sse2 All z64 options were enabled except NoNpotFbos.

Game seems a bit unstable, which is to be expected. Plus there are heaps of graphical glitches. But it's a really impressive N64 game.

M64Py - Mupen64Plus with GUI.

Cheats (Level select, etc)

You'll have to find the game rom yourself. It's only 20-30MB, though.

The game chugs a bit, but seems fast enough to be playable on my Q9400 @ 3.2Ghz. I'' continue posting screenshots. Had to use FRAPS to capture them since they come out blank with Mupen's internal screenshot function.

The texture alignment isn't quite right, which is pretty common with N64 emulation.

Gauntlet Legends runs, and is playable, though. It just has graphics corruption for a lot of plugins and configs.

It isn't bigger news because "Playable" is not a good end results. It will become big news when it's no longer unstable and without tons of glitches, until then it's like a game entering Alpha: Utterly meaningless to the end user.

You are never, ever, ever going to get Infernal Machine totally stable. The game isn't stable on real N64 hardware.

The game is playable. This was previously considered pretty much impossible, due to how esoteric Infernal Machine's coding is. The voice acting works, and the graphics glitching seems to mainly affect things in the distance - likely related to the game's aggressive culling.

It has better lighting, poly counts, particle effects, animation, and controls. It is, however, quite buggy. Average playthough on a real N64 will see a handful of N64-locking crashes.

Infernal Machine runs at 640x480. That was the highest resolution the N64 was capable of. The AA and lacklustre outputs did hamper that, though.

Also, the game runs at 30fps, which is rather impressive.

There's still the slight problem that a huge chunk of N64 games don't emulate PROPERLY. But one of the biggest "WILL NEVER BE EMULATED, EVER" games is now emulatable.

Also, I don't think Battle for Naboo runs. At all.

You'd still be hard-pressed to emulate Donkey Kong 64 without it turning into Expand Dong 64 at random. I've heard it would require cycle-accurate CPU emulation to eliminate this.

Good example. Locking the game to audio synch does help significantly, but it never quite goes away.

Also, that weird bug which resets the map happens more often on emulators than real N64 hardware.

Oh, yes, and the famed Body Harvest is still broken - physics are mucked up badly, making the game unfinishable.

Some N64 games were ugly, and some simply suffered from the N64's crappy output.

But a lot of them looked very nice.

There are still a lot of games that can run but aren't optimised very well, I'd like to see them being flawless before adding support for games that nobody will play.

Legend of the Mystical Ninja has run with the same slow-downs and graphical bugs it had about a decade ago.

>There are still a lot of games that can run but aren't optimised very well, I'd like to see them being flawless before adding support for games that nobody will play.
Factor 5's games were considered some of the best on the system. Rogue Squadron, Battle for Naboo, and Infernal Machine all suffer from similar emulation problems.

The only reason Infernal Machine is running is because of the z64 plugin (plus a low level RSP plugin), and the z64 plugin was specifically created to run games with ucodes which haven't been reverse engineered, like Factor 5's.

It's possible that they used 256 colour textures, they did stuff like that very often to save fillrate. Plus the N64 had that stupid texture cache limitation too.
I wouldn't be surprised if the textures would use even less colours, like 64 or 32.
