Moments in retro vidya where you felt like an idiot.
>Play on Death Wind in F-Zero for the first time
>Notice my car is moving slightly left or right
>Think my game is messed up
>Removed the cart and clean it
>Play again, reach Death Wind
>Same shit happens
>"Oh man, I think I picked up a broken game"
>Sit their and looking at the game
>Say the level name to myself quietly

I never got past the second level of Death and Return of Superman as a child because I already knew that Doomsday was going to beat Superman to death, so every time I got to the boss, I just let Doomsday kill me instead of fighting back and was puzzled as to why I could not continue the game.

When I first played Earthworm Jim as a kid, I was never able to get past What The Heck because I never realised that I'm supposed to jump on those green crystal things and start running until years later.

I was kind of dumb as a kid.

My brother and I actually managed to clip through the wall a few times just by timing our jumps right.
In everyone's defense, that was the weirdest one time use game mechanic ever.

Secret of Mana. When you're near the sword and your character says "The village is this way...I need to find something to cut through." It took me like 10 minutes to realize I could walk through the little waterfall to get to the sword. this was like three months ago. I'm 25.

Flying Battery act 2 -- got stuck as a kid because I didn't know to jump over the dash panel that sent you the wrong way. I'd always end up level-selecting past that. Only found what to do 4 or 5 years ago...

i think little signs in the level with Up and Down arrows that light up as you press Up and Down respectively would have helped to indicated that pressing those buttons is of some special importance in that level. It is even worse because when Sonic is on those barrels U/D don't seem to have any effect at all, and the fact that jumping on it in rhythm makes more sense than simply pressing buttons that at first blush seem to not garner any response at all while he is on the barrels.

That makes me feel a bit better that it took me about 30 minutes to figure out. I thought it was jump timing related as well.
I hit a roadblock for about a year in Resident Evil where you're supposed to put the battery in the lift, THEN re-crank the flood gate to shut off the waterfall. I was stuck on that through grade 6, and it wasn't until I started year 7 that someone told me how to do it.

It's not that hard, even without passwords. Don't get me wrong, there are totally trouble spots (game overs aplenty in Buttville) but I wouldn't call it impossible to finish.

I remember when i got Oot when it just come out. Took it over to a friends house to play it because if everyone from that era remembers it was sold out everywhere so some unlucky people did not have a chance to get it. Anyway we were stuck on a part we had no idea what to do so we spent a half hour trying to figure it out till we said screw it we need help we walked down to a convenient store closest to us bought a Game Pro or something else can't really remember took it back to his house soon as we got back into it we stumbled on what we were supposed to move and thought damn we did not even need to get that so he figured ill rio a few pages and take it back tell them i bought it this way and get my money back Ha he took it back and they exchanged it he lost anyway. Sorry for the long story but it is the most vivid time i can think of were a game made us feel and look like idiots.

to be fair shining force 2 gets a bit all over the place around half way through the game. I always used to get confused about what to do next when i was younger.

As far as my own idiot moment it would have to be suikoden. You get told at the beginning to og outside and find the dragon/gryphon (whatever fantasy flying creature it is) so you can travel to the first place.

When they said outside rather than thinking outside of the room i thought they meant outside of the entire fucking town, so i spent hours wandering around the world map fighting shit and levelling with no party and no clue of where i was supposed to go. I fully gave up on the game until a few months later where i tried again and realised how stupid i had been.

I seem to remember Rock Tunnel being light enough to see the walls and make it through in Red and Blue, but pitch black in Yellow. I was determined not to waste a slot on Flash so I just played Blue and Yellow in sync. Allowing that sort of sneaky trickery is just magic to me.
