I think all those are nice covers. The Japanese one feels the most exciting and game-like, and overall Sonic looks somewhat better-drawn in his JP/Euro versions, but the heightened emotion and energy in his face on the US cover is nice, and the US variant has that modern, "high-tech" look that I associate with some older SEGA stuff. Euro cover could be a bit more colorful I guess.

I believe the NA cover might be based on Red Sonja. Back then a lot of games that came over here from Japan were given the Conan treatment on the cover whether it fit the theme or not. I don't know what was up with that. We were still stuck in that adventure and fantasy=Conan era I guess. Glad we're over that now. It was actually done by a Japanese Capcom artist, the same one who did that Street Fighter Alpha 2 cover art of Ryu and Akuma in each others' faces.

It doesn't really match the art style of the game, that's the major failing of the cover. Ideally, you want the art direction of your game box art to match the art direction of the game itself.

But back when this game was released, I don't know if many would have responded to the JP box art. Then again, the game wasn't marketed worth a fuck anyways so we'll never know.

Many Crazy Castle games were retooled to represent a different franchise for lack of being able to get rights, etc.
It wasn't an uncommon thing to do.

Normally I prefer Japanese anime styling art over western semi-realistic styling, but Rolling Thunder on the NES is a BIG exception. The US cover is infinitely more epic than the JP cover, and it's one of the most epic VR covers ever IMO (JP left, US Right)

Given the fact that anime game covers hardly sell games, I doubt that using an anime cover in a time even more averse to anime would have done the game any favors.

Western gamers in general don't like anime. Thus, if you have to make your cover look like some Dune knock-off, you make your cover look like some Dune knock-off (and look good doing it).

The weird thing is that there was a fully localized Fist of the North Star game on NES. Why did Sega have to rebrand the Master System and Genesis games? Was there some licensing crap involved from Toei and Shueisha?

Now we all look back and laugh, but this really did hurt the TG-16's success in the west. I still have no idea what NEC was thinking with their marketing. The Genesis and SNES also had their fair share of stupid boxart, but the TG-16 just blew them out of the water with almost their entire early library of games.

They did wise up later though, to some extent.
